I know of the Mountain Goats because of the Vlogbrothers, now you're giving them a 9/10. Maybe I should check them out 😅

Wow, ok, this review hit a nerve in me, so excuse my rambling... I'm kind of the same, I wouldn't consider myself a "full goth" but I've dipped my toes in various ways, through the aesthetic (there's photos of 21 year old me trying to look like a slightly more colourful Siouxsie which makes me cringe looking back now) and listening to The Cure and similar bands of the era one too many times. As I grew older, got a job etc I started to tone things down and my music taste evolved and expanded, around the same time my self esteem took a nosedive and I lost that pride in my appearance that I once had and settled for drab sweaters and put all my quirky jewellery and bright makeup in the back of my closet. Maybe one day I'll bring out that worn out black biker jacket and start putting sparkles on my face again, although now I'm 29 I'm not sure I can get away with it as much anymore, haha. Sorry for the wall of text, thanks for sharing your story and I'm glad you finally got to cover this brilliant album! :)

the speech at the end of this really sums up your feelings on it perfectly and it is one of your most simply written endings and both bittersweet & hopeful at the same time

with the heavy praise he gave it plus the fact that its his easy number 1 i think we can call it an unofficial 10/10

Mountain Goats are becoming one of Favorite bands as I have been slowly working through there back catalog over the past few year. I think it is fair to say I am a big fan. This did not disappoint at all. I think this shares a lot more in common with "Beat the Champ" then most people realize in many ways it is a fitting squeal. Both albums deal with the tension that occurs when we identify and present a public image centered on a character or one aspect of are personality and then what happens when that fades. Some look for escape, some get sad and others double down Deep stuff.

To Mark, a 10 is an album that has no flaws, no nitpicks, an album he cannot say anything negative about. He has given 2 10s within the past 769 reviews. That is 0.26% percent of all his reviews. By comparison, 13.00% of all of the albums he has reviewed have been on his best albums of the year list. Every album that gets a 9 has reached on there, but not every album he'll even give an 8 to. Such is the way of Mark.

I was actually wondering if you even knew who The Mountain Goats were. Glad to see someone enjoying this album I thought it would be another Get Lonely in their Discography.

Nothing, it's a great record from what is arguably their golden age. It's just that when I discuss it with other fans a good chunk of them write it off due to the sound being mostly unvaried or not really connecting with the subject matter. Judging by the initial reaction to this I thought it would be the same thing.

Thank you, that album is so underrated, all the time it is getting just okey reviews, while IMO it's one of the best albums of the year

Tbh, this album was at a disadvantage for me. I know I’m probably missing the point here by a lot, but I was hoping after I heard Rain In Soho that this would be Rain In Soho the album

I enjoyed this review, although I gotta disagree more than a bit. It might just be my distaste for John Darnielle's singing talking, but the Mountain Goats have never been a particularly strong band to me. And on this album, Darnielle just seemed to be some sort of hipster wannabe with the way he fulfilled that goth "concept" by just name checking random post punk and gothic rock figures. The lyrics aren't that good, and Darnielle's vocals aren't good enough to make them work. The music is nice though, I'll give him that.
