BACK FROM THE DEAD, BOSS!
Kept you waiting, huh? Let's discuss the central inspiration behind Hideo Kojima's 'Metal Gear', John Carpenter's Escape From New York.
This video essay is the sequel to MOVIE GEAR SOLID: The Great Escape. Fittingly, Donald Pleasance is in both!
*******************
"It is 1997 and a nearly destroyed New York City has become a walled prison for over 3 million convicted criminals who have lost, but survived, a brutal war against the United States Police Force. In this maximum security prison-city, escape has been made impossible - every bridge is mined and walled, the surrounding waters are filled with deadly electricity and the Statue of Liberty has become just another guard tower from which officers in infra-red goggles blast, on sight, any prisoners desperate enough to try to get out. Radar scanners revolve and helicopters circle the island of Manhattan endlessly. Other than the monthly food drops made by air into Central Park these outcasts are left completely on their own to prey on each other.
Into this living hell one master criminal, Snake Plissken, is sent alone on a mission as dangerous as the criminals within its walls; he must rescue the President of the United States whose plane crashes in New York City on its way to a world summit conference; the President is carrying papers that are crucial to the survival of the United States. As a deadly incentive, to prevent Snake from abandoning his rescue mission, two devices are implanted in Snake’s head, which could blow the famous crook to pieces.
Once inside New York City, Snake is pitted against roving street gangs of violent criminals and the crazies, the criminally insane, who live in the subways and break through the floors or pour out of manholes in hordes like sewer rats to attack whomever they can. It is the most powerful street gang in New York, the Gypsies, led by The Duke, who hold the President prisoner, demanding amnesty for all inhabitants of New York City for his release."

Escape from new york is awesome 👌 John Carpenter is a legend and a huge Gamer, he was offered the chance to take Kojima to court for plagiarism, But John Carpenter told the lawyer's to leave Kojima alone, as Carpenter said he loves Metal gear solid, and said Kojima had always been respectful to him. That is awesome 👌 Carpenter is a legend 🙌

Yet Kojima tried to replace him in every MG after the first Solid. Because Kojima is a egomaniac starfucker who wanted Russell to do the job. But Russell told him to fuck off. He eventually got his way with Kiefer, who barely even spoke.

@@vladv5126 Right. And do you know the story of how Kojima was trying to replace Hayter after the first Solid because A) Kojima is a starfucker who wants "famous" people to do what he thinks are his Hollywood level stories, and B) He hated that people thought of Hayter when they thought of Metal Gear more than they thought of Kojima. I'm still not sure why you mention Phantom Pain as the only game Hayter didn't voice Snake, as I never suggested otherwise.

@@wullahblack6452 because he wouldn't need to "try and replace him". Much as I like Hayter, he worked for Kojima so if Kojima wanted to replace him earlier, he just would have. 🤷‍♂️ not saying I agree with his choice but I think there's less drama behind it than what people think.
@wullahblack6452
@wullahblack6452 2 жыл бұрын
@@vladv5126 It wasn't a matter of just replacing him. Kojima, being a star fucker, wanted someone who was an actual "famous" actor. Which is why he went for Russell. Russell said no, repeatedly. He finally got his chance with Sutherland. Hayter had to audition for the roll each game, multiple times. That's not very respectful. Spiteful, even. There's plenty to back this up to, if you check out any Hayter interview for example. Makes sense when you think about it. Hayter after all actually is a Hollywood level Director and writer. Unlike Kojima who wishes he was.

I think the Rambo and Lethal Weapon movies got a lot of inspiration for the Franchise. Rambo got an a Bandana. Every Rambo films got of a lot of stealth infiltration methods. And Snake got an a Bandana all the time. As for Lethal Weapon; the Snake character and another stuff looked like Rits ( the Police Officer ) at the beginning from the franchise, Snake looked like him. After when the Solid arises, the character designs changed a little. But inside at MGS2 Sons of Liberty. Snake looked a little more like Mel Gibson. Of course, the Policenauts games; got a lot of sense, and inspiring too on making the future of Metal Gear as a franchise.

one thing I always liked about Solid Snake's character was how he never bought into his own legend. It appears he never really thought highly of himself, especially after darker revelations were revealed to him about his origins. He always pedestaled others such as Gray Fox, Master Miller, and even Big Boss(in skill and feats) higher than himself. This even extends to how Big Boss himself never bought into his own legend when he pedestaled The Boss higher than himself.

* I think if they ever decide to do a prequel trilogy that leads up to a remake of Escape from New York, I don't see the harm in saying that Snake Plissken quite literally "IS" Solid Snake from the Metal Gear games. It would certainly make Snake Plissken's world a whole lot bigger, and give him more of a backstory. However, the character should always look like Kurt Russell's Snake Plissken, so that there's no confusing that both characters are one and the same person. They could simply call the first prequel *ESCAPE.* Where they merge Snake Plissken and Solid Snake's background. Where he was originally named "David" by a woman who was one of the staff members working on project "Les Enfants Terribles". * However, for some reason he ended up in foster care(her doing perhaps?). He was adopted by a couple who formally named him "Bob" for whatever reason. For whatever reason, they could not care for him anymore, and he went back into foster care. Then, he would've been adopted by a man named "Plissken" and his wife. This man named "Plissken" would've been the leader of the Hells Angels motorcycle gang NYC chapter. He would not have wanted anyone to know that he couldn't have children of his own. So he and his wife would've put on some normal clothes and made themselves and their home look decent when they went in to sign the adoption forms. * They would do this so they could fool the adoption agency into thinking that they would make good parents. The name "Bob" would not sit right with this leader of a Hells Angels MC chapter. So he starts calling him "Snake", and they begin grooming him to become the leader of this Hells Angels chapter some day. Growing up in a motorcycle gang in the Bronx, NY(where they lived) "Bob"(Snake) becomes a huge fan of, and is obsessed with basketball(the New York Knicks), the Harlem Globetrotters, Evel Knievel, and surfing(in order to explain certain things in "Escape from L.A.). For recreation, if he wasn't playing basketball(prison rules) at one of the local courts, he was surfing at "Rockaway Beach"(92nd Street Beach). * When he was 17 he even won the "East Coast Surfing Championship". To make a long story short, "Snake" gets into a lot of trouble before the age of 18, and for whatever reason is court ordered to join the army. Perhaps to give him an opportunity to break away from crime. He does so well in the army, he is selected and transferred to Green Beret boot camp. He impressed his superiors so much, that he was selected and transferred to the high-tech "FOXHOUND Special Forces Group". He was placed in the "Black Light Unit"(also known as "Delta Unit") FOXHOUND's "Sneaking Unit Special Division". This is why he was called "SD" Plissken(or SD could stand for "Sneaking/Delta"). This could also be where FOXHOUND gives him the call sign "Solid Snake", or "Snake" for short. * Then, WWIII breaks out. This is where the 2nd prequel in the trilogy could take place. It could be called *Escape* *from* *Siberia,* where he is given his first purple heart for something he did, and is promoted to the rank of "Second Lieutenant". The 3rd film in the trilogy could be called *Escape* *from* *Russia,* and could be where he is decorated with his 2nd purple heart by the president himself, and is promoted to the rank of "First Lieutenant". He loses his left eye during this mission due to nerve gas. FOXHOUND surgically implants a bionic eye in place of his now useless eye. It is obvious to look at, that his new eye is bionic in nature. This replacement eye gives him normal vision(so as to not hamper his depth perception). * He was also given a special technological eyepatch to not only conceal the nature of his now robotic-looking left eye, but is also designed to be used in conjunction with his cybernetic eye. Utilizing nanotechnology, they provide him with special features such as: night vision, infrared vision, ultraviolet vision, telescopic vision, microscopic vision and x-ray vision. The last 3rd of the movie could be where he's on leave, and is convinced by FOXHOUND scientist "Dr. Harold Hellman" and fellow member of Black Light Unit "Fresno Bob" to rob the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City, and the rest is history. * Then they can begin working on a remake of "Escape from New York", where they could say it's the year 2037(instead of 1997), or better yet, don't give a specific year. Just say "In the future..." or something like that. When WWIII began, the crisis gave the government the excuse they needed to declare martial law in the country, and it becomes a police state that is then reorganized into a new government that is renamed: "The New World Order"(N.W.O.). New York City is hit by a chemical or biological weapon. The city is quarantined until an immunizing agent can be developed. * A wall is built around Manhattan Island where any civilians infected with a contagious virus, where there is no current or not enough immunizing agents available, are sent. It is a slow process, but any civilians in Manhattan, or were sent to Manhattan Island and are still alive are eventually treated. They had a two-fold reason for building the walls. When the crisis was over, they were not going to tear the walls down. Instead, they were planning on using Manhattan Island as the one N.W.O. "Manhattan National Penitentiary". However, they would not shut off *ALL* of the electricity, and they would continue to provide plumbing, water and food(only what's necessary), but they would not perform maintenance on anything. * They would be on their own in that regard. So what do you think? Would those make some good Snake Plissken movies? Do you think they would do him justice? They would have to take great care when casting the role of Snake Plissken. Josh Brolin would've been perfect for the role when he was between the age of 31 and 39(between the years 1999 and 2007). Jason Momoa would've been perfect between the years 1999 and 2018, but he's 6'4". The character of Snake Plissken is 6' 1", but I guess we're only talking about the difference of 3 inches. They would not be able to afford to make a mistake like they made when casting Alden Ehrenreich as Han Solo in that movie called "Solo: A Star Wars Story. Please don't make a mistake like that.

Very random, but the plot of ‘presidential plane landing in “anarchist” territory’ feels extremely similar to Cyberpunks recent dlc story

Can you say more about the influence of The Great Escape on MGS? They're my favorite movie and game but I had no idea they shared more than passing resemblance.

First Time I saw Images fom Escape from New York it blew my mind, holy shit this is like MGS that's where that came from! I had the same Thing seeing Scarface with Vice City as a Kid. Let's hope this Video stays up before the Patriot's Network claim it.

I've always said Kurt Russell would be perfect for the role of Solid Snake, and then i usually add "and Solid Snake from MGS1 was based on Kurt Russell!"

I saw LA before I saw New York, unfortunately, but I love both movies. LA is definitely cheesier and jumps the shark at that surfing scene.
