Shin Godzilla is a 2016 science fiction political thriller directed by Hideaki Ano that was a resurgence for the king of the monsters in a terrifying way. Taking inspiration from the Fukushima nuclear disaster and making the kaiju scary again, Gojira returns to critical acclaim and great box office!

The end of this movie was so scary. The way it was shot was perfection. You implied that he was transforming into humanoid creatures but I think he wasn’t just transforming, he was “producing” them as protection and would still be in existence as a huge creature.

“We’ll have to live with godzilla” - the ending Keep in mind this. Godzilla 1954 Godzilla was in the culture, it’s Past, shared with them thousands of years and maybe even then at the end of it they may even have been able to ignore Godzilla after his first and seemingly only attack since the fish may return. In the end of that film… We had to destroy what the bombs couldn’t destroy. In this film it’s believed that the bombs wouldn’t even destroy it, and we couldn’t destroy it so we froze it and separated it. So… of Godzilla is the past and our attempts to destroy it then… what is this film? We have to live with the past and our past of trying to destroy it.

I got the impression because his body was essentially "frozen", it was the monster's way of adaptation by breaking down to reform in improved forms better resistant to the same coagulant factor going forward.

Hey, that's a better explanation that some other people have touted. I've seen some people go "Oh, Godzilla was defeated by committee, so he was becoming a committee." which I think is a pretty stupid explanation. I can maybe get Godzilla seeing humans running around while he's going through Japan, figuring those are his main opponents, and creating and splitting off smaller creatures to either guard him or sent out to directly hunt down people. But what I don't and refuse to believe is Godzilla knowing for a fact that the decisions of a committee of humans is what beat him in the end.

The way the human act (other than the exaggerated political bickering that form the core of political commentary), especially the military, are also very relitic by movie standard. There's no jets flying into the palm of Godzilla for no reason, JSDF and USAF fight how they would in real life: shell the thing from kilometers away and drop smart bombs on it from high altitude . They failed because Godzilla evolved near impenetrable hide and radar guided particle beam, not by being complete idiots like Legendary monsterverse humans so often does.

Great point! It caused destruction before, but never intentionally. I like how they made it seem that it didn't even really have sentience. Like it was just a walking nuclear reactor and the retaliation was just a pain response, not even directed at anything specific.

What makes it so tragic yet so unique is how they connected Shin with the 3/11/2011 disasters in Japan much like how they used the original for the bombs. Gives you a bit of Oppenheimer vibes with how Godzilla is the son of the atomic bomb and the overall message with nuclear involvement.

@@freakkyser I feel if the production was going to rely a ton on the human drama, they could be more dynamic giving more natural characters. As I mention in another commentary, I loved both Matango and Cloverfield. I know they differ in concept with Shin, but have on common that the characters were better developed so the plot could leave the Monster(s) as an accesory without issues by showing easily the emotions and fears of each group. On other hand Shin feels souless on the Cast department, because everyone basically were burocrats doing their job with plain faces during most of the screen time. The film simply didn't give me any kind of thrill Nor feeling when I watched it, which left me disappointed because I read a very "passionate" review prior doing so.

I think this rendition is most unsettling because of its “species”. This isn’t a dinosaur at all. This thing, if I recall correctly, was a mutated eel. Which gives longtime fans an uncanny sensation when looking at it. That coupled with just the fact that this animal is strictly shown to be suffering the entire time is also unsettling, considering all Godzilla seemed very functional despite their origins. This thing is horrifying. Very zombie like and genuinely my favorite of them all just for how scary it actually is. This thing made me fear Godzilla.

I only got to see it once in the theaters. It was only showing on 1 screen at 1 theater in San Diego for 2 weeks, and it sold out fast! We have a huge Pacific Islander and Asian community in So Cal, and I couldn't believe that it was only playing at that 1 theater! I was lucky to get the tickets I did. (I heard rumor that it played longer and in more theaters closer to LA, but I was never able to confirm that.) I ordered the Blu-Ray as soon as it was available, and I have watched it MANY times since. In some ways, I prefer it to the original, but it does drag a lot during the middle with all the political and bureaucratic scenes. I will always love the '54 version, but this one just hit harder for me as a movie about the horrors of science (and politics) gone wrong.

Shin being defeated and coming back far stronger works so well for the character. The big G outside of the Original 54 film or 98 film, being unhurt by the military works for that specific version. This version is a tragic being, he doesnt want to exist and is essentially one big giant tumour. He is in constant pain and is evolving at too fast a rate and it is hurting him along the way. In the final form we see in the film, is a creature that doesn't understand why everything is hurting him and he is lashing out at what is around him. Not only is he terrifying... he is so tragic. He doesn't want to exist yet he does. That plot point is why this movie is a bloody masterpiece and deserves to be re-evaluated by Western media and audiences. I love the monsterverse because seeing a big hollywood budget version of the films I grew up watching gives me pure joy, but this film makes me feel the dread I felt whilst watching Godzillas rampage in the 54 classic. Hideaki Ano was the perfect choice for director also.

That scene where Shin Gojira's maw splits open (while that eerie music plays in the background), only to reveal a rail gun like laser blast which then elevates into his back spine playes shooting out more lasers as he utterly decimates Tokyo into rubble, was pure cataclysmic horror. I swear, I had to rewatch thay scene around 20 times when I first saw it. It was masterfully done. I love the G Man in all iterations, I have even become nostalgically fond of Zilla, but Shin really took the cake for me. He's not just destructive, he is also tragic, his very existence is nothing but pain, literally splitting his body in order to adapt, and the final shot of him still looming over Tokyo, a threat that has been delayed but not defeated... returning him to the image of Nuclear Power that he was in 1954. I don't know if someone has already mentioned this already but there's an extra depressing layer to the tragic existence of this particular Godzilla. During the Big G's rampage in his final form we are treated to a song called "Who Will Know" in the background. Now mostly your attention is focused on Godzilla's destruction but taking a listen to just the track itself gives a sense of heavy emotional weight. Looking at the LYRICS however.. it really makes you feel a lot more sympathy for the guy. I will share the lyrics below. If I die in this world Who will know something of me? I am lost, no one knows There's no trace of my yearning If I die in this world (But I must carry on) Who will know something of me? (Nothing worse can befall) I am lost, no one knows (All my fears, all my tears) There's no trace of my yearning (Tell my heart there's a hole) I wear a void Not even hope A downward slope Is all I see I wear a void (As long as breath comes from my mouth) Not even hope (I may yet stand the slightest chance) A downward slope (A shaft of light is all I need) Is all I see (To cease the darkness killing me)

Shin represents the original purpose of Godzilla movie. After 1954, yes, a whole 66 years, Shin reminded us that Godzilla was meant to be a figure, a figure that shows the horror and despair of the war's victims. Though many people now see godzillas as "world savers" , since most of the movies are now them fighting other kaijus. But hey, Shin knew what he should be like! Instead of being a hero, he's just a creature which was fallen victim to humans activity. Just like the 1954 G.

Hell yeah Klayton, I'm so glad to see you cover this movie! I absolutely love this one, and it is easily in my top five (if not one) of Godzilla movies. The creature design is so sick and the evolutions are genuinely shocking and creepy. I think about the humanoid Godzillas coming out of the tail at the end way too often, it's one of my favorite pieces of art. Very reminiscent of the pool scene in Annihilation, and obviously Xenomorphs.

I also loved the constantly evolving Godzilla. And, man, when the movie reaches THAT SCENE... Absolute chills. I mean, Shin Godzilla was already my favourite Godzilla before that. But when that music began to swell, and everyone evacuating the city stops and turns towards that eerie purple glow and you just knew that something terrible was about to happen...that's when Shin Godzilla went from my favourite Godzilla movie, to one of my favourite MOVIES.

Cool! I have this on Blu Ray! Thisibwas supposed to be the start of a film franchise, but it was cancelled as WB/Legendary still hold the rights to GODZILLA. The cancelled sequel was going to involve Godzilla fighting off King Ghidorah bit instead of Ghidorah being an extraterrestrial, he was going to be a mutated species of Moray Eel or Sea Snake, with the ability to walk on land. The concept art for King Ghidorah is pure nightmare fuel.

I'm such a huge fan of this movie and am really happy i caught it in theaters. The concept of Godzilla quickly evolving to defeat his enemies was a great new spin and all the creature design work was fantastic. The human characters were great and the focus on them and the governments dealing with this situation was a welcome change. I will gladly sit down and watch a film solely about men in kaiju suits whaling on each other and crushing models but this film offered us something new and people seemed to really respond favorably to it. Hope we get a continuation of this story. And what a score by Shirō Sagisu.

I saw this movie in theaters when it came out and it was awesome. It was the first time I watched a Japanese Godzilla movie in theaters. I was super deep into my depression at the time. Every day felt like hell. Then one day I randomly decided to look up what movies were playing at my local theater and I saw Shin Godzilla on that day’s list. When I walked into the theater I was the only one there so I sat in the very front seat. I had such an awesome time watching it. It made me feel like a kid again back when I was super obsessed with everything Godzilla. I had so much fun watching Godzilla on the big screen. It brought some life back into my life and I couldn’t have been any more happier when watching Shin Godzilla.

I love the new abilities. It made perfect sense for this Godzilla too, he was supposed to be an accident. Some kind of organic adhesion to extreme nuclear decay, they even said 'its like he has a nuclear reactor inside him or something.' Really enjoy that you called his breath exhaust, as that's what it appears to be meant to do. Any threatening stimuli provokes a response from the radioactivity inside, and he releases it through his altered body, showing us that first devastating breath attack. Eventually, the output is too intense for the passage it is using to exit, (Godzilla's throat and mouth) so the exhaust compresses into a laser. Fantastic creature creation.

One thing that I think doesn’t get mentioned often enough is how genius the cinematography is in this movie. One example is how they show the size of Godzilla through so many creative shots - one of my favorites being one where his giant tail is sweeping high over the people as they flee. Another is a moving shot of him from a ground perspective as if he was being filmed by someone on a monorail or bus. Little things like that helped put you in the action, like you were experiencing the destruction along with the people in the movie.

Watching the movie with subtitles is difficult especially for me, but it is worth it. I love the way Godzilla looks in his 3rd form when he walks on land again, so gigantic and menacing; and the detail of the movement is unbelievably real for CGI. You can sense the intelligence of the monster without knowing its level of consciousness at the same time and it truly makes it terrifying not knowing its next move.
@lutherheggs451

Its easily the worst one to watch with the subtitles because of how many people you get speaking all at one time all going quickly all combined with the locations of places and what not....Its not something I would ever show to someone who didn't watch Godzilla films and asked to watch one... But then again I would never show someone one of those garbage trash dumpster fire English dub versions either, So many of the films get butchered and raped by the edit done for the english dubs that it loses the entire story to the films for just monsters fight rarrr. Which is part of why so many people cry about the human parts of the Legendary movies and pretend that 90% of Godzilla movies aren't 80-90% people and 10% Godzilla. The original 54 film has Godzilla in 4 scenes, one of them is clearly a hand puppet.

Shin Godzilla felt like an art house Godzilla film, in my opinion a good direction to take with a Japanese reboot. It did a good job of having that traditional feel of humans scrambling in board rooms just trying to solve the problem, and seeing the destructive nuclear energy allagory of Godzilla. With the creator Evangelean at the helm it of course has some disturbing horror aspects.

Shin Godzilla is pretty much perfect, a modern 54 but new and different while having the soul. Saw it in theaters with my family and it was packed to my surprise. Love the music especially "persecution of the masses" which is about the people and "who will know" which is about Godzilla. The ending is great with a dual meaning: that man is the real monster and like that saying how we're made in gods image is the same for those beings made in Godzilla's image, he his a god who made his own humans.

Part of that was because Toho couldn't make a sequel until after 2020 because of the contract with Legendary. Hidaeki Anno just got bored and decided to remake Evangelion. I think it might be for the best not to do a direct sequel to Shin Godzilla. Either you trust someone to not to ground the weirdness ano brings to the series or you bring Anno back, and I don't get the sense he's right for godzilla long term. Good for a one off where he can stay grounded and not run the train off of the rails. Like, just looking at Wikipedia, it says Anno wrote a proposal for a sequel that was for people who didn't like shin godzilla, which feels like a mistranslation, but also seems entirely in character for him. So, it's a rock and a hard place for them.

Saw this movie in 2016 when it came to Canada, and what I absolutely loved was seeing how many different demographics there were. There were kids, teenagers, adults, and elderly people who were probably old enough to see the original in theaters. Was a really cool experience compared to the 2014 film's demo that I saw. Also got a cool 11x17 promo poster for the experience. And tinnitus, likely from that atomic breath night sequence, lol. Movie was pretty much perfect. And I do think that while they didn't wind up making more live-action films to follow it (at least until this year), the whole experimental phase with doing things like the anime trilogy of films and subsequently, Singular Point and now the 2023 standalone film was a nicer experience as the MonsterVerse kept alienating me more and more with worse films post-2014. The animatronic Shin Godzilla's a funky case. It pretty much wasn't used at all in the final film. The original idea was to chroma key it into the sequences they were making. Difficulties in doing that resulted in the movie going over-budget, they scrapped the animatronic (no idea where it went), and wound up doing the creature's sequences in full CGI to a ridiculously convincing degree. It's interesting because timestamps indicate the animatronic was being used as late as August, 2015, less than a year out from the film's launch. And it was where the first leaks of the monster's design came from in January of 2016. The greatest irony of the film is that while it was critically acclaimed in Japan, and went on to be a major success, its North American presence was lukewarm and a lot of reviews for it were middling on our end. Pretty sure a lot of this film's intent and thematic relevance was lost in translation coming over here if you didn't pay attention to the 3/11 disaster and the Japanese government's response to it. But the filmmakers stuck to their niche and made an amazing movie.

This has got to be my favourite visual design for Godzilla. It really carries that uncanny realness to it, while most other versions feel a bit "cool" and stylized. I just went to a theatre screening of the '54 Godzilla and on thew way home decided it was time to check out Shin Godzilla (...and somehow the KZbin algorithm knew?) and I agree that this is the second best Godzilla film. I love the Godzilla, but there are very few Godzilla films where I'm interested in what's happening outside of the destruction, but this one had me hooked. My biggest frustration was how fast and dense the dialog was which was like an Altman directed episode of The West Wing, I could barely take my eyes off the subtitles it was so fast. I don't know if anyone else is missing it, but there is a heavy implication in this film that Gojira was a human to some degree. This is the twist at the ending; it is confirmed by the presence of the human skeleton-like creatures along with the actual human skull at the tip of its tail. How would he have the DNA or know-how to make these? How does he connect the fact that the explosions on his back are connected to the flying things in the sky (which he also knows to shoot down)? The glue that holds this together is the fact that the film dedicates time to telling us about the nuclear scientist. They say that he studied Gojira, but his wife was wrongfully killed by the government's nuclear testing and he became hateful to humanity. So we have a scientist, who lost his wife due to government negligence, who just so happens to be studying a giant undersea creature that feeds on nuclear waste? On top of this, recall the absolute first scene in the movie. We see authorities boarding a yacht; in it they find a handwritten note and documents and his clothes and shoes neatly folded up. It seems like a suicide, but when you consider the fact that the monster that he studied for years just happened to appear under his boat and then just happened to intelligently attack the society that callously killed his wife, it seems like it might be a human lust for revenge moreso that primal malice that is driving this Gojira. It's hard for me to not believe this because why else would Anno give us all of the information about the scientist in the first place.

Never mind the quality of Shin and the MonsterVerse, I'm just happy we have more Godzilla media, though I do wish Singular Point was good. As for Godzilla being killed, it took a weapon far worse than a nuke to kill him. The creator of said weapon knew for a fact that once his weapon was used once, it would create an arms race which is why he burned his research notes and took his own life after it was fired, to keep the world from creating something more destructive

One thing I noticed about the 2016 Godzilla was that he moved and behaved like an actual reptile. He wasn’t a mindless zombie like a lot of people saw him; he’s just not facially expressive like other incarnations of Big G have been-much like real life reptiles. There was emotion and thought somewhere deep inside that head, we just couldn’t see it-which in turn, actually makes him scarier because he’s more unpredictable that way. Animals may have emotions and capacity for thought, but they are creatures of instinct first, and when you’re around them you can’t always tell what they’re thinking…or what they’re gonna do next. 2016 Godzilla gave off that unpredictable animal vibe with that blank stare and beady eyes, and the fact that he rarely roared only sold it further. It’s also worth noting that he *only* became aggressive after the stealth bombers actually succeeded in hurting him, much like a cornered animal defending itself from something dangerous. It makes this incarnation of Godzilla not only menacing, but sympathetic as well.
@renmcmanus

Stepping on an ant hill is not necessarily a act of aggression. It's often done by accident. But the ants are still completely justified in attacking you. Shin Godzilla was still destroying homes and killing people so it becoming aggressive hardly mattered.

It's not a reptile, though. It's a fish. I see Shin Godzilla as a bit less animalistic with the way it moves in straight lines and doesn't do much besides likely instinctive unconscious reactions to threats. It's much more scary like that, in my opinion.

I was so excited to see this film back in 2016 when it was announced to have a limited time release in the US. I went to the closest theater premiering the film and I went in looking foward to seeing a true Japanese godzilla film, 120 minutes later, I left conflicted. I wasn't sure how to feel about the movie so I rewatched it a few times since it was released to home media and I gotta say I like it less and less with each view. Though I do think there are moments of greatness in it such as the effects, the way Shin Godzilla is presented as a serious threat with the Incredible destruction scenes as well as some musical scores being some of the best I've heard. Unfortunately there's 3 things I feel keep this film down from me enjoying it. 1 The characters, I felt nothing from anyone I don't even know their motives besides stop the monster, they feel more like pieces to get the plot going, say what you will about characters of other godzilla films, there were at least a few with wants and not all have a single minded goal. 2 was Godzilla himself, the evolution stages and powers are fine, it's just there are things I feel are just going over board, the second mouth on the tail, replicating with humanoids and the talks of possibly growing further to being a literal god like being creating a universe in of itself was just too much, also the whole growing and evolutionary stages is way too similar to Destoroyah. The 3rd and biggest problem I have is the pacing of the film, there's too much time cut to the politics and giving only a few moments showing the chaos, being political satire of the handling of the Fukushima disaster, but it's a film to try and entertain and also the time between when godzilla leaves and returns is 20 minutes but watching it feels like double that time. I can understand anyone enjoying this film, there's nothing wrong to enjoy it, I just don't fall in that category of those who see why the movie is as highly praised as it is. Good movie just not for me.

I loved the 1998 Godzilla. And he will always be my favorite version. But I also greatly enjoyed Shin Godzilla's design. Not sure how I would feel about him becoming a swarm of mini monsters. But it is a terrifying concept. I'm not a big fan of the Legendary version. His design just looks far too clumsy and weak. I'm also tired of him being a good guy. When Mech Godzilla was first introduced, it terrified me as a kid. And still freaks me out a bit today. All because, as a kid, we had no idea it wasn't the real Godzilla due to the outer skin the robot wore. And seeing him make his allies literally bleed in vicious ways is unsettling. Its why those scenes still get to me today. AND I WANT MORE OF IT!

Loved this movie, been watching Godzilla since I was a kid. This godzilla was everything I remember and more. The music was amazingly good too.

In response to your presidential election comment in the video: It was so empowering how the young people (myself included) actually felt like we influenced a presidential election with our memes. The older people couldn't keep up with the "meme magic'. Also the music in Shin Godzilla was amazing.

The Director Hideaki Anno of Shin Gojira worked, also on one of the best mecha anime from the 90's Neo Genesis Evangelion (there is much more going on with this version of Gojira). This movie also make a really big influence in japanese games, anime, and movies just like the orginal one from 1954. This is one of the best movies that I have ever seen. For the American Godzilla movies only 2 are neutral quality Godzilla King of the Monsters, and Godzilla vs. Kong (2021), the rest are just really bad movies. Unfortunately Legendary Pictures is making another movie from monsterverse so it's going to be good, since the parent company is chinese Wanda Group so they will probably focus on settling old disputes here (China - Japan international relations are complicated), and people are getting tired of monsterverse movies. But on the positive note we are getting new Godzilla movie in 2023 from Japan so it will be 100% excellent. Ps. You definitely are more knowledgeable with Jurassic Park, but no so much with the Godzilla franchise.

Loved this movie! It did much to soothe the burn I felt after Godzilla 2014... a movie that falsely advertised itself as the big budget, seriously written Godzilla horror movie I've wanted someone to make ever since I first saw 1954. Shin Gojira definitely hit the mark closer, but man was I STUNG after that year of buildup before 2014 >

Don't understand the hate for 2014 and especially the hate I hear over KotM. They were very well done. As much as I also liked GvK I think the first two were the best in the series so far with KotM being the best. I don't feel shorted by them at all, having been a fan of Godzilla since I saw Godzilla vs Megalon in the movie theater. I feel like if America was even going to try to make Godzilla movies, they needed to pay respect to his real might, and they did. Even when putting him up against their breadwinner Kong, who never should have stood a chance against Godzilla in the first place. This movie Shin Godzilla was awesome though - I agree with you there big time.

Personal Favorite Godzilla ever for my opinion the amount of differences of the Shin compared to the Old Showa Godzilla's was epic, the design, the powers, the story/lore of it really makes me amused on the Godzilla Franchise. Plus on how Shin Godzilla's evolution was pretty interesting. I'll never get ever bored with this Kaiju. :)

I loved the evolutions of the monster. And as odd as he looks in the second form, that is one of the scariest pieces in cinema when he's crawling down the street, people running away from him. Can you imagine seeing something like that crawling down the street like that. The fact that his rage seemed to be more from the pain of his transformation than a need to kill anyone also made it creepy. Like he had to move forward, and anything in his way got it (just like the tsunami flooding). And of course that takedown of Tokyo is iconic. I really think they got it right.

My absolute favorite Godzilla movie. For the first time since the first movie they even managed to make Godzilla terrifying. Completely missed the critique when I first watched it. Thought they were just going for realism. Still bothered by the use of the word "evolve". Individuals don't evolve, populations do. This is metamorphosis.

It’s too bad they haven’t done a sequel to this one. I saw it with a friend back when this came out. It had a VERY limited release In Puerto Rico, where I live, literally only one theater showed it. The San Patricio one if anyone cares. They had a one night showing on a Sunday night at 9pm. And I gotta tell you whoever thought it was a good idea to release at that hour on a Sunday night when we had class the next day…should get fired. They ran a little event that night and of course a lot of people came. Young geeks like me and my friend of course. The first Toho Godzilla since Final Wars? No one was gonna sit that out. And much to our surprise Lloyd Kaufman was there. Yes, as in the Troma Films guy, Lloyd Kaufman. He gave us a little greeting in the best Spanish he could muster. I don’t think he needed to. Puerto Rican geeks speak pretty good English 😉. No, I didn’t stop to say hi to him. I haven’t seen the any of the Troma stuff and from what I hear they sound too icky for my taste. Anyway, when we first saw it the subtitles were overwhelming. The showing had them all over the frame and it was hard to keep up with the dialogue and names. I remember being totally baffled at the first form’s appearance. Totally caught me off guard. But it grew on me. All I can say about that is that if fans can accept something this weird for Godzilla, then there’s really no reason to stay mad at the iguana thing anymore, in my opinion. After the movie finished we had mixed feelings. And so did everyone else. As we exited the building, at 11pm(!!) we overheard some people discussing the film. The ones I heard were expressing disappointment, one even went as far as saying “I liked the 98 film better.” And I just screamed “Woo! 98!!!” Just to embarrass my friend who was shushing me as I laughed and they looked at me like a looney. I make no apologies. But yeah, at first I wasn’t sure what to make of it, but the film has since grown on me. Definitely see it in black and white, the “who will know?” scene looks jaw dropping that way.

I remember watching the movie at a AMC here in Cali and this movie just blew my mind! This is honestly my favorite Godzilla movie. I was getting huge Evangelion vibes until I found out Hideaki Anno directed it. Amazing piece of cinema.
