@@willnicholson18What happens is that they're just ignored. It's good that nothing horrible happens to people like him! But what happens is that good people finish their reports, ask their questions, put forward their positions, make their recommendations, propose their votes, make their votes, speak to the public, speak to the media, speak to other MPs; and get completely ignored if it's inconvenient. It's like an immovable object. Of course it does move at least perceptibly when there's an election or change of cabinet, so that's a good thing, but during a government all these select committees and advisory committees and commissions etc are theatre. They are put into more than full force if they agree with the government's design and they are simply ignored entirely if they don't. It's pointless box-ticking to have these committees if they are usually ignored, they'd best but it's far better than anyone getting hurt - so I'm thankful for that!

@@LambsyLamb ignorance and stupidity has always been my guess. Like that woman who featured in the news for a while after she broke down crying on question time. She'd voted Tory because there were a few long term unemployed on her street and she thought they were getting a free ride so loved the idea of David Cameron's benefit cutting austerity only to realise she's a low income single parent and all her benefits were getting cut as well... Oh how we laughed.

@allmodcons2274 God I feel for you, the Sainsbury’s I worked at didn't have zero hours but instead stiffed everyone by giving a contract with minimal hours and allowing overtime to fill holes in their schedule. You would typically do more than double your base hours in overtime and then they'd take it away with little to no notice. This also allowed them to underpay on holidays and sick leave.

Been there too large private company, it made my illness worse and now I'm so ill I can't work. It was awful. I'm old enough to know what a good job, good boss and good company looks like. Thatcher f*kd all that up. My first job my employers were amazing and valued people paid well good holidays kind understanding and if there wasn't work you got extra paid time off, and the employees returned the favour with loyalty trust and very hard working and hut the ground running when work was very very busy. It was a two way street and you were treated as an individual. The bosses were upper class and old money but we all had a lot of fun and they'd treat us all to meals and nights out and we all went from the tea boy or girl to the managing director. There was no judgement or stigma or values put on education as you were trained up. My last job was ultra monitoring, being told off, watched castigated if you were off sick constantly changing your job role pushing and punishing you the whole business was toxic ✌

This was an interesting conversation. The question about whether RM should be private or public particularly caught my attention. I don't think we're going to make much serious progress in the UK with the state of our key services and the misery of their workers and customers - post, rail, energy, water, healthcare, and so on - until we get back to understanding that if you want vital services to be run fairly, effectively, affordably and such that they carry out their primary function over and above enriching a select few, they need to be publicly owned and run (by competent people, to be sure); genuinely accountable to government, and the government accountable to the public so they have an interest in properly overseeing these services with their electoral fate tied to whether these services meet their promises. All of these services are failing badly and becoming or have become unaffordable to ordinary people. (We're also unlikely to make serious progress in contending with climate change while relying on private corporate behemoths to make responsible decisions about where our energy should come from and to what end.) A major industrial and political seachange is long overdue, because neoliberalism isn't working for anyone but those at the top.

I am a foreigner living in this country for many years, legally, no benefits, paying taxes, high rent and always reading my news. When I thought that all politicians are like Boris or Farage then I saw Darren Jones!!! With young blood like him, this country still has a future. The way he grilled the CEO of Royal Mail , reminded me of american movies with debates in court and juries. SUBLIME! I wish him all the best and keep his dedication for public welfare alive and never let himself intimidated by Megalodons like Amazon or any other trillion $$$ companies! This guy deserves credit for how he deals with lying greedy capitalists which don't care about workforce or their customers , just money, shareholders and bonuses.

Very much enjoyed DJ roasting Simon Thompson and co. What an interesting interview, particularly when Mr Jones was explaining the validity of many of these select committees. A very capable man and someone definitely worth keeping an eye on I reckon. Excellent stuff PJ, thanks.

Darren does such a good job of explaining the nonsense around Royal Mail that it is infuriating to hear that we allow this stuff to happen. I'd like to see more of this man in the national discourse and as a part of the shadow cab/future gov.

What an excellent, excellent MP Darren Jones appears to be. His ability to explain in understandable terms very complex issues is highly commendable. And his parallels drawn with the Houses of Parliament and indeed the circus that is PMQ's these days does 2 things. 1, confirm that there absolutely is a need for select committees. And 2, absolutely confirm that they need more powers to be able to carry out restorative measures where necessary. I do hope Starmer has this guy on his radar.

The amount of local junk mail delivered by Royal Mail is silly now. Price of sending letters gone through the roof. How were they allowed to split up Royal Mail various services?

Our manager sat us all down this week and made us watch this pathetic video from RM about how important the ‘junk mail’ is, and we should treat it as first class mail, we all laughed. It is however a massive income stream for the business.

CWU wants Royal Mail re-nationalised. It has to work with the existing privatised RM management, but the experience since privatisation has only been negative both for the workforce and the service.

I worked at Bulb before they went into administration at the end of 2021 and later saw Darren question Hayden Wood (Bulb CEO) at the select committee. I found him to be very clued in with the realities of the industry, aware of how technology could be used to better the sector, and generally brought an air of rationality and understanding that I'm not accustomed to see in UK politics. More of him please, hope he progresses and has the integrity he appears to have today.
