Mtndewgang yeah I thought the same when he referenced the engine sharing between the Supra, Soarer, Chaser, Magesta or whatever it was. You’d think that’d be a cheaper way to go even today, just build 2 or 3 engines that work awesome and have lots of tuning potential, and just give them all different maps from the factory based on which vehicle they’re designated to.
@AfferbeckBeats4 жыл бұрын
@@roddydykes7053 Well that is what they do now, but with chassis platforms as well as engines. They had so many platforms on the go and it's part of what bankrupted these companies. Now everything is a variant of a shitty crossover SUV hatchback thing because it's cheaper and easier to do that than have 15 cars built off 5 different platforms. It's a shame no one makes anything interesting anymore, but they had to go for boring efficiency to survive.
@kongotronics4 жыл бұрын
@@AfferbeckBeats It's funny that you say "to survive", cause companies like Toyota and Honda are bigger now than ever. They make a killing off of these appliances and they know it. If Toyota can make big bucks off of mid engine 4 pots coupes then they'll crank them out like hotcakes, but the people want crossovers and 70mpg and they have money to pay for it so automobile manufacturers will supply the demand as long as there is a market. The sport coupes can only watch with envy from the second hand market. You know it, I know it, we all know it. Goddamnit Toyota make the 4th gen MRs

Really great to see this MR2 basically being fully restored. Both the AW11 and the SW20 are two of the most enjoyable and rewarding cars you could find yourself driving. But I'll never forget the first time I drove an SW20, because I instantly bonded with it, like I'd been driving it for years. Within a few minutes of getting in the car I just understood it, and I had no fears about kicking the clutch and getting the tail out around some tight roads. Even with it's quirks, never has a car felt more "right" to me to drive than an SW20, especially after only a few minutes in drivers seat. I always tell people if they have the chance to own or drive an SW20, you just HAVE to do it.

9:25 the 5th injector is known as the cold start injector, and is a throwback to the 1st gen 3S-GE engine (gold top). as far as I recall, both 1st and 2nd gen's (1986 - 1993) had this, and the 3rd gen did away with this feature before the 4th gen (BEAMS) came into the picture. that shape MR2 had both the 2nd gen and 3rd gen 3S-G(T)E engines, depending on when it was made. Celicas had 1st, 2nd and 3rd gen 3S engines (imports to the UK and NZ got the 3rd gen), and the ST185 GrpA and ST205 Celica GT-Fours had the 3rd gen turbo variant.

Handy tip for refitting rocker cover when the gaskets are in place, because movement of the rocker cover can cause the gaskets to slip out of place. Find two long bolts of the correct thread, cut the heads off, and thread them into 2 holes used by rocker cover studs.
