The Modern Martial Artist

Күн бұрын

There once was a boxer who used beautiful footwork and other worldly head movement to evade his opponents. A boxer who used distance as a weapon, leading his competitors into some of the most beautiful knockouts ever caught on film. A boxer who kept his hands dangerously low, but was just too fast for it to matter. That boxer was of course named Samart Payakaroon, and as well as being a champion pro boxer, he also happened to be the greatest Muay Thai fighter of all time.
Competing during the golden age of Muay Thai, Samart was lightyears ahead of his time. He incorporated complex boxing footwork and head movement similar to Muhammad Ali’s into his Muay Thai repertoire. If Samart had used more common moves from boxing, his attempts to blend them with Muay Thai’s staple techniques may have been a totally futile endeavor. But the cross steps, L-Steps, backwards shifts, and pulls used by Ali and Sugar Ray Robinson before him turned out to be perfect additions to Samart’s unique style.
Ali’s footwork pattern was one of the first things ever covered on this channel. It’s a sidestep, then hop or slide, cross step and then return to stance.

Don't forget Samart was born with Small Lungs which hindered him cardio-wise which is why his style is so relaxed and evasive. He simply wouldn't last if he had to brace for every strike. Although still incredibly fit he was not on parr with other fighters cardio-wise but made up for it in his reflexes and accuracy, along with his legendary balance + Defense (he himself notes this is the most important factor), as well as his extreme ring IQ. Also, all footage we have of Samart in Muay Thai is when he RETURNED to Muay Thai after retiring 7 years prior - and he still made it to the elite level. The boxing footage we have is just after his retirement and lasted for around 2 years? After that he focused on his singing and acting career until 5 years later when he returned to fight for a few.

And there is more to Samart. He was also supposedly lazy, and the trainers said he did not take the training serious, and he didn't show up for training, yet he was still this good. Looking at him fight, you can see he is incredibly relaxed, he even looks bored, and he looks so confident. He holds his hands down, and walks like he is he is totally relaxed. It is weird. In the video you can see an incoming kick to his face, and he don't even flinch, he just let it pass centimeters away from his face. It's like he can see it in slow motion.

Checking with the rear leg is simply a genius move, Samarts left leg kick was vicious and he had beautiful hip-dexterity particularly on the right side which he seems to favour judging by the footage and the level of extension on that side. Your point about not being enslaved to form is so true and that is the bane of point-sparring and a good exempel of why most karate fighters won't do well in a fight. Considering that Samart was well-known to be a lazy trainer it's incredible just how good and accomplished he was.

Samart is without a doubt the most accomplished combat athlete to ever do it. Boxing and Muay Thai are incredibly competitive sports that are very different and require that you spend your whole life practicing for a chance to reach the top. To become the greatest MT fighter ever (or even be in the discussion) and then switching to Boxing past your prime and winning a title there...if you don’t follow either sport heavily you will never understand how insane this is.

My first impression is that the Ali style of footwork is even better suited to mauy thai. If Ali was vulnerable to one thing, it was a swarmer. A head down, bob and weave type like Frasier. The addition of knees and the teep completely eradicates that style from your opponents playbook. I'd have to see what would happen to a head down, bob and weave guy in mauy thai.

@@globoyflemming To be honest I still enjoy KSKM more than Holyland because the fights were more fun. But sadly KSKM had lots of plot points that were not answered. Like the Samart fight that was hyped throughout the series and the new characters and plots that were introduced. It seems as if the author got bored at some point or was forced to conclude the manga. It could have gone for more volumes to be honest

I would agree the fights were more fun in Karate Shoukushi, Holyland just holds a very special place in my heart I have Kamishiro hitting Izawa with the flying knee at the end tattooed on my forearm xD
@globoyflemming
@globoyflemming 5 жыл бұрын
And Karate Shoukushi was phenomenal but it breaks my heart because of how he ended it /: I mean we saw nothing of Mutou towards the end his character was just used as name value, we never even saw who wins between Minoru and Ibuki, nothing of Samart, nothing of the Saenchai inspired Thai fighter, it ended so abruptly and so incomplete I hope someday he maybe has a chance to revisit it and close up some loose ends of it :(

Strange that most fighters use the guard-up stance and still get punched in the face while some of the best fighters lower their guard down, leaving their face expose but the opponent can't hit it.

Its like he always walks back while in reality he has a rocket engine in the ass. Im pretty sure he would be able to take out most of these opponents with pure offense as well, his confidence shows that. But he is a highly efficient machine that will waste absolutely no energy and pointless effort when he doesnt need to.

WOW!!! I'm a huge boxing fan so I know about his boxing career. I always thought he had World class boxing skills but was just got overwhelm by an animal like a prime Jeff Fenech. For those who don't know who Fenech is, think Tyson only more aggressive, lol....This video was an eye opener!!! Like I said, I knew his boxing career but definitely I never knew about his legendary Muay Thai status...What is most fascinating is the fact that he married his World Class Boxing skills to his Elite Muay Thai skills and created a style that is so unique and beautiful to watch inside the ring, but most important of all, extremely functional....Absolute amazing, you learn something new everyday....😮

Stop lying. All the techniques that Samart used are from muay thai and muay boran, he was a 8x times lumpini champion and he used all these moves way before he made the transition to boxing, , you are basically implying that he was the best muay thai fighter because he incorporated boxing, and that is simply not true, the reality is that he was so good at muay thai that making the transition to boxing and destroying everyone was too easy for him. Even with less than 20% of his muay thai. boxing is too easy when you truly master muay thai.
