The situations where I really needed a stick or a spear, where when I had to pass through a bunch of wild dogs (believe me, that's not much different than hungry wolves) Then when I had to walk a much longer distance than what I had planned. Finally, I had to reach high places like tree brunches or to walk in steep downhills where there is no path etc. Spear was a savior 2 times I 've met wild dogs in the outdoors. Last time it was a dog bigger than a wolf, was looking like a white wolf but it was hungry and mad, as mad can get. It was the only time, I remember saying prayers on a hike. That's how scary things can get.

Nice, Dan. A good stick has so many uses. Besides what you mentioned, it can also be used as 1) a support pole for a tarp setup; or, 2) an extension pole - lash your saw to the end where you made the notch, so you can reach things like dead limbs for fire or soft tips for ground insulation, lash your knife to it to make a spear, or, lash a small Y branch to the end to pick summer fruit.

Totally agree with all you did. I am a real spear guy and usually make one every time I camp or do things like you are suggesting. We will have to get together and make some. I usually forge some metal points too and bring some sinew and put them on. We could show how to make glue and do that in one of your videos. I even bring a target at times. Love making spears!

Forgot to mention, how important a good knife is. even for a hike. You never know what you'll come across.

Thanks Dan. I made a lot of spears as a kid. Used a real spear to roust some racoons from the porch that were harassing the cats and stealing their food. Spears have their uses.

Now all you have to do is show us how to heat the wood over the fire and take that big bend out of it. You do know how right?

Candle wax and chap stick. I'd use pine pitch or spruce pitch to coat and preserve it.
