The Multiverse Hypothesis Explained by Brian Greene

The multiverse hypothesis and the concept of multiple universes depends on the conception of reality as a four-dimensional space-time continuum in which "everything that could possibly happen does happen in some universe. The prominent theoretical physicist, mathematician, and string theorist Brian Greene explains the multiverse hypothesis in detail.
The multiverse hypothesis has been criticized for a number of reasons:
Some physicists claim that the multiverse hypothesis is not falsifiable, and therefore not scientific. In response, defenders claim that the multiverse is testable and some suggest it may be more scientific than certain other untestable theories.
Some proponents of the theory say there are an infinite number of conceivable universes. According to quantum mechanics, universes without any classical space and time-idealised as sets of quantum wavefunctions-cannot be directly observed because they do not interact with anything in our universe and would have no effect on future events in our universe.
Brian Greene explains our universe would be affected by the ripples from bubbles of another universe that it bumps into as it passes by. However multiverse models are problematic because they can not explain why the Big Bang happened at all or why the laws of physics are as they are today, which seem to follow from mathematical constants.
The American theoretical physicist and string theorist Brian Greene discussed nine types of multiverses.
A multiverse of a somewhat different kind has been envisaged within string theory and its higher-dimensional extension, M-theory. But we will discuss these theories extensively in another video.

Guys this is going to be deep but read this: If every decision we make creates a new universe in the multiverse, then what counts as a decision? Can animals have decision, can plants or even not-alive things? If only our (human) decisions made universes then we must live in a simulation, because we are the one chosen species, but at what point did we become humans and not monkeys? Okay lets say this last one was not true, and every ALIVE thing can create alternate universes with their decisions, then what's the point of them? If we maybe die, we could "load our last savefile of the simulation" and start again without dying? But then there must be some kind of higher form of existence after death, where we can still choose between the alternate universes (but animals couldn't?). But lets say if there were no alive beings in this universe then there were no "Random" events, like a decision (which could also not be random but i wont go into Determinism now) then there must be only ONE and not more ways that the things in the universe happen, no random events, just an exact linear timeline, where every time we would start over the same thing would happen. That way there would be no need for alternate universes and they would not be created (if they are created the previously explained way). I know nobody will read this😅. But if you do then have an amazing day and what do you guys think about this topic? :D

Your ideas are interesting.. But it all comes down to the ones consciousness.... We only have theory and no physical evidence to back the multiverse theory.. Every other scientist has his own theory to explain.... But if we can decode our conscious we have only began to understand what the universe is exactly and can answer many universal question that has rattled human as to who we are, are we alone, how did we existed ( ape theory is still non conclusive).. Why are we here as so on....

decision is a man made construct. they believe there is no free will as of now so if this is the case then there are a finite amount of universes that arise because the choices that were being made may seem like they had an alternative, but that choice was the choice that was going to be made all along so no other choice actually existed. But lets say free will is real, or some version there of. Entities are born and die, so how did the first decision make the first universe, but besides that, eventually the living entities die and no more decisions are made. halting all universe creations. we are nothing to the universe or creations of them, we are just very special because we move with seemingly no underlying reason why this happens. but beyond that, we do not matter to the universe or creations one way or another, and to think that we control the universe and the universe subsequently controls us is suspect at best. And to say something like "yes but what if" is not conducive to anything but a farytale story because it is impossible to be the correct choice so to say what if holds no meaning since the first theory is incorrect, it will then continue to be calculated with other incorrect effects.

Hi, I read all your comment and it is very interesting. In fact, I'm writing a fiction novel based on the theory of Multiverse, and some ideas of mine quite similar to you. I'm also struggling with the reason to caused a new Universe. My theory is it's not every decision, but SOME Right decisions and Everything can create that right Turn. Like what'd happen if Hitler parents never had a chance to meet? What if there is no Einstein, Newton, or Stephen Hawking? What if there is no mutation and DNA that caused weed to become rice or wheat? What if there is no meteor hit the Earth and erased Dinosaur era...

I say life is much more simple than that, and our decisions don't effect anything other than our own lives and sometimes others. But nothing grand like multiple dimensions. There may be multiple universes, but I don't think they have anything to do with each other. It's as simple as multiple galaxies- each galaxy is separated from the others most of the time except colliding galaxies. Or planets, stars, solar systems, it's all suspended in the infinite void of space. I don't believe another "me" exists. The idea of infinity gives us the idea that there are different versions of Earth but in reality it's just different planets that may share similar traits. Other than that, I think everything is unique to itself and doesn't exist anywhere else. There is only similar things. Say there's a planet that had continents similar to ours but it's not a different "version" it's just coincidentally similar.

But according to the Simulation Hypothesis (and the Double Slit Experiment) things don't exist until the observer collapses the wave function. In other words, like a computer game, scenes are not rendered until the player steers his view to the scene. That means, other universes do not exist until a conscious observer looks at it. Therefore, multiverses only exist as potentials at any one time.

If The Multiverse theory is correct than there has to be one universe where a civilization got so advanced they could travel through the multiverses and they found us, turns out we're that civilization and came back to see our past selves, so is it a matter of time till they get here, have they already been here and we just don't know Infinite possibilities keep in my mind what I just said has happened if this theory is correct

I think, and what common sense tells me, is that different universes may exists, but it's just that it exists in a different part of space. For instance right next to other universes. Much like galaxies or planets and stars. Multiple planets and stars exist, but they're not just different "versions" of the same one.

No. Since the ultimate multiverse is the root of all other multiverses, we could safely assume that the ultimate multiverse comes from nothing. How? In a dimensionless concept where there exist 0 laws of physics, 0 limitations, the multiplicative inverse of these limitations equals infinite possibilities. I'd like to call this concept "The Void". This concept could never be replicated in any of the universes inside the multiverses of the ultimate multiverse no matter how infinite they can be. That's because there are always forces, dimensions, or basically any laws of physics, etc, thus limitations. Now back to the root of true everything, The Void. How did nothing create everything? There's one way to think about it and it is as follows... *Since there are no laws of physics to restrict anything from happening, everything happens! Thus "The Void" gives birth to the ultimate multiverse.* In comparison to our reality, there's always something no matter how much you try to remove from it. Even time and space is something! The slightest law of physics is something! Having dimensions is something! That's why true void could never be replicated inside any of the multiverses. In true nothingness, always expect every possible mathematical or logical outcome to happen because there are no rules to restrict ANYthing from happening. It is true void and true infinity at the same time. It is the world that abstracts itself by pure logic. It is not correlated to our physics at all, but can only be explained through our math since math is the root of physics; the same relation goes with the void and the ultimate multiverse. Have a good day.

I'm a big fan of believing that free will does not exist. Its simply an illusion. Think of it this way: You wake up one day and lay out three different color shirts. Now, we believe that we have the free will to choose whatever color of shirt that we wish. Is this not so? We can choose any particular one that we like on any given day. Not so. Instead, when we make our choice, ie: the green shirt, blue shirt, etc, we are only picking the shirt that the universe had already picked out for us. To us, we have total free choice, it's very convincing that we do. However, in a multiverse where every possible outcome can and does happen, our choices are restricted to what this universe already has planned out. Meaning, "horray! I'm choosing the green shirt today!" Nope, in this universe, green was your only choice. You can't see or perceive it, but that choice was already laid out for you. Fun stuff to think about, for sure.😊

I enjoy these fascinating videos... anything related to space univerese by experts I dig it. However, In my opinion... we just can not really prove all these fascinating ideas of multiverse and even how far we think we have observed and understand our own universe. As we know already universe is expanding and due to its light speed we will never be able to catch up to its edge..... Parallel universe or multiple universe is really a subject for study and research. I hope one day we are able to unlock the mysteries of our own universe and change the way of our lives evolves and our existence is understood. Brian Green.. you are one of the physicist I admire and like how you implement your ideas into all these mysteries.

To be precise, we are existing in 1 of the 7 layers of universes. We actually exist within the 3rd layer and beyond the 7th layer exists what is called divine perfection and the power source that controls all 7 layers of universe. And at some point of time, all 7 layers of universes will come together to form 1 complete universe. I had a dream about 10 years ago and in my dream, my body was floating through space and I had looked back and I could see the earth and I suddenly heard a voice say everything will be ok. As I continued to float higher,I noticed my skin was shedding (peeling) and a voice spoke to me again saying you will be ok. And whatever force that was carrying me had generated a great source of light around me and that was how I was able to see my skin starting to peel. And the voice spoke to me again and told me each time you pass from 1 universe and into another your skin will peel to reveal new skin.I had asked the voice that was speaking to me why my skin must peel away and the voice told each time you pass from 1 universe and enter into another universe, your skin must be cleansed and new skin must be revealed in order for you to continue.

I am so at unease that we don't basically know anything! How was the universe created, why, is there a purpose for it, if there is a multiverse, how big is it? Why was it created? And if there is another universe right next to ours, we still will never be able to visit there and see it for ourselves. If we would all split into generation ships and go to explore our galaxy, we would soon be so far from eachother to share the knowledge, let alone another universe... There is so much unknown, and it's all big questions.

The multiverse is an idea and our greatest theories such as quantum mechanics, string theory and inflation are supporting it. So for example in quantum mechanics, we have quantum fluctuations and quantum wave function so in quantum fluctuations Another universe can arise from nothingness like our universe did after the big bang and quantum wave functions is an even better example according to the book of a parallel world by Michio Kaku he says that because of differences between new wave functions and previous wave functions of particles, the new possibility that caused by a new wave function will separate to another universe( many-worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics which they( the new universe) exist besides of our universe. And advanced civilisations could travel to them by wormholes) So accepting these theories means you accepted multiverse idea.

@@georgesos @george so___s as you said multiverse can be theory but since we can't test this theory or idea so our best option here is to rely on our theories that are supporting it. In the past they didn't know black hole exist becuse black holes back then was only exist by math and they existed only in papers just like multiverse and becuse of that multiverse can be proofed by math and since our universe works with math i can not see any reason that multiverse doesn't exist. There are so many things that you can not test but you think they exist like souls and god and..... All i am saying is in this age and year which is 2021 we could barely go to mars in the past they didn't had tech to find black holes and they found that black holes exist in future .so in future we are so advanced that we could go to other universes. There is other reason that why multiverse should exist and that is god. In his own book he said there are 7 skies which skies stands for other universes. Max said there are 3 or 4 types of multiverse and since multiverse relies on string theory( aka theory of every thing) 2- inflation( which inflation relies on false vacuum and our own universe itself was false vacuum and since inflation can solve so may problems it is our best bet) And mathematical multiverse that i told you. Accepting this theories will make to accept this idea or theory and even god himslef said there are other universes so take that as a yes my friend☺.

Everything is like spinning clocks floating in a pond. The “space” is the pond. The gear is “our clockwise spinning solar system”. The universe is expanding based on a continues butterfly effect of stars exploding when their time is up and the accumulation of elements floating in the cosmos. Yes their are next door ponds but we are connected, just the grey zone of where our spin is hitting. It’s one giant ecosystem of life cycles and star explosions spreading the elements

@@grayfoxart2268 Seems to me that maybe you don't quite have a full grasp on the philosophy of 5he multiverse. The evidence, while circumstantial, is still solid. The various values for the various forces and fields being what they are. If they were .0000000000000001% different or whatever, no matter forms to make the universe we see. If this big bang is the only event that had ever happened in all of reality and existence, its beyond astronomical in terms of luck. It's easier to accept that big bang events are beyond counting and we just happen to be one of the inevitable jackpots. Also, it's a matter of logic. Think about it. The big bang cant be the beginning of everything. There cant be something from nothing. There is either nothing, ever. Or there is something, since forever. The concept of nothing is an abstract, human invention. It only exists in certain predetermined perameters. Like: what do you have in your pocket? Nothing. In reality, you have in your pocket trillions of atoms etc. There is nothing but empty space. In reality it's a frothing sea of virtual particles. Plus space IS something. For the big bang to happen, there has to have been a cause. Something before it triggered it. And something before that, and before that unto infinity. The mere fact that there is anything instead of nothing is proof that there just has ALWAYS been something, in some form, forever. So, that being the case, 13.7 billion years out of infinity years of history means there has to have been other universes. The most likely case is that black holes are the mechanism for multiverses. Each big bang produces trillions upon trillions of black holes. Black hole collapse/singularity must at some point encounter an outward force that resists it, cuz I highly doubt it just collapses forever. That collision is a big bang. Those black holes produce big bangs in themselves which produce more black holes. This could go on forever in the direction of inward/smaller. It's like the thought experiment of crossing the street at half the distance every time you move. In principle, you could make an infinite number of moves. Likewise, there isn't some bottom floor of reality where things cant be divided any further, you can always go smaller. Meaning once you go beyond the boundaries of our little window of physical law, beyond the Planck length, like what a singularity does. These multiverses would be entirely self contained, unable to interact with each other. In our math, when we get infinity when trying to compute black hole singularities or the big bang singularity. They always say the math breaks down, but I feel like the math is right, infinity is just the answer. The math is saying beyond this point is a literal infinite number of possibility, you've reached the threshold of our physical realm so to speak. You can't possibly know what came before or what happens after, it's a reshuffling of the deck.
@grayfoxart2268
@grayfoxart2268 3 жыл бұрын
@@patrickkuby4887 It makes sense, but its not evidence, science will never ever gonna know what really happened. Coz there is nothing we can't do to measure or replicate what happened. All we can do best is to speculate and use our imagination on what was. The math may come up with an elegant solution but it will never answer the question of how life came to be, let alone conciousness.

Not yet, but soon we will be discovered the proof. The birth of science is the curiosity of the mind. We do philosophy first, then prove later. Think of this, that time that we have proof has already been created somewhere in the future. Its already existed, We are not yet there.

🤔...So what I always think about is, if we live in separate universes, and there is multiple universes, then what's in between the separation...❓❓❓ What would that space be considered, and what is it filled with...❓❓❓

The multiverse is certainly an interesting idea and it attracts a lot of public attention. There is nothing wrong with that in principle. Entertainment has a value and so has thought-stimulating discussion. But do not confuse the multiverse with science, because it is not. -Sabine Hossenfelder

The multiverse is an attempt at dealing with fine tuning. Since the materialist ideology can’t possibly be wrong, this provides an out. Since you can’t, by definition, observe other universes, the multiverse hypothesis (based on no observations whatsoever) cannot be challenged. It is a simple matter to create any number of dimensions mathematically. It’s even easier in most programming languages using arrays. Extending this capability to the conception of universe or universes is a bit of a stretch to say the least.

NOTE: The definitions of "multiverse" being discussed here are what I call the "Weak" Multidimensional Principle. The variations are based on Everett's interpretation of quantum mechanics or the variation of the parameters of string theory or "Eternal Inflation" or one or more of several other variation concepts that give, individually or in various combinations, separate universes that can be extrapolated from some common beginning, a 'Primal" Big Bang using mathematics. To me it is obvious that if you can have one "big bang" starting this complex situation, however it may turn out to be constructed, then you would be able to have other "bangs" THAT HAVE NOTHING WHATEVER TO DO with our cluster of universes, no matter how they started or exist now. We have an obvious example in that we exist, which means that such things can occur. If they can occur once, then they can occur an infinitely many times again and again, none of them having anything whatsoever to do with each other. Also, the primal big bang that started our system created the basic physical structure that we use our mathematics to try to define and interpret. Without such a well-defined structure, we, as observers imbedded in that structure, would not have come into existence to do so (the chicken or the egg parable). This means that our structure has to be as complex as it is, however developed, to allow life and, moreover, intelligence capable of understanding (to some extent) this universe/multiverse complex. Simple structures, though more likely to come into existence through some "bang" (note that I am using this term just to mean a beginning, not a physical explosion from a point and expansion as in our case), would come and go with no such intelligence as part of them and thus we would never even note them unless we can develop means of looking outside of our own multiverse complex (after getting means to see other members of our own complex in the first place, I would think, if possible). Where would all of these "bangs" come from? In our universe we have the "quantum foam" of ever-churning virtual atomic particles which are actually measurable as the Casimir Effect and on which are based such things as the evaporation of black holes using Hawking Radiation. If conditions exist and there are no rules AGAINST something, then, in our universe, it WILL happen. I would think that this would be the ONLY principle that would exist in anything inside or outside of our universe/multiverse: IF THERE ARE NO RULES TO STOP SOMETHING, IT WILL HAPPEN AGAIN AND AGAIN. Thus, the true structure of the "place" (again, in the most general possible meaning) from which our universe/multiverse came from is that IT HAS NO RULES WHATSOEVER. What could possibly enforce such? For want of a name, I entitled this "cosmic all" the OMNIVERSE. Even if the "reality foam" created things that have fatal paradoxes in their structures that destroy them, it may take some "time" (however this might be defined in that universe) for this to happen (hysteresis) so, like the gap between cutting down a tree and it finally hitting the ground, such crazy paradox-ridden structures may exist for a very short or very long time. For all we know, our universe may have such paradoxes in its structure, as the problems with quantum mechanics and general relativity mixing together may indicate. What this means at the bottom is that except for a very tiny part of the Omniverse, all of it would be, to us and to different parts of it in-between themselves too, completely inconceivable to any and all concepts that we might think of. Also, every possible variation of parameters that we CAN think of would occur somewhere, most likely an infinity of times, as new bangs come and go. Want a universe identical to the one in the video game GOD OF WAR? There probably is an infinite number of variations on that set of rules. The Marvel or DC universes? Ditto. If a sub-structure can come into existence that can support such places, even if only temporarily like a stage magician and his tricks, then they will be churned into existence and out again. This is what I call the "Strong" Multidimensional Principle.

That is something I've thought of. It's possible that everything in this reality is dependent on every other aspect and pattern here. If you change one things it all changes. The simplest way? change how geometry functions as a whole. Easy way to change that? change math and maybe space.

With the continuing expansion, could it be that the universe hit its "bubble point" at some stage, wherein each of the ensuing bubbles is an entire universe.... hence multiverses?
