What makes this movie so great is that it runs this amazing line between serious horror, cheesy comedy, and fun action scenes. It does this balancing act so well, you said it best : it's a rollercoaster ride.

@Yawnzee_4 ай бұрын
I'm with you on that Dillan 1 and 2 were great they went down hill after. I think the fact that Rachel Weisz didn't reprise her role in as Evelyn was a contributing factor that and the fact that the scorpion king just looked horrible cgi wise 😅

We were all pretty surprised by this movie the same way you were dad; pretty much at the same points in the movie that you were too☺. I think the reason it was such a hit was because we were all surprised that it was THAT good haha. Brendan Fraser hadn't done a serious movie since he was in "School Ties" so no one expected this much action and intelligence combined in a character he'd play or movie he'd star in(not being insulting just going off the movies he did right before The Mummy). The Mummy Returns (the sequel) is also a good watch. You guys are great reactors! EDIT: I didn't know we had cats reacting too!🥰

The Mummy is one of my favorite movies. I love Rachel Weisz as the brainy, beautiful leading lady, Brendan Fraser as the adventurous man of action, and Arnold Vosloo as the chief villain. Also, they did get the mummification practices correct when Evelyn described how ancient Egyptians removed people's brains (minus a slight omission): The embalmers used the hook to also punch a hole in the person's skull so the brain drained out when they were rolled over. And I always get jumpscared when Jonathan is toying around in that damned sarcophagus, no matter how many times I've seen the movie. Side trivia: 1. In the scene introducing her as Ankh-su-namun, model/actress Patricia Velásquez was completely naked with the exception of a loin cloth, a few pieces of jewelry, pasties & body paint (body paint took four hours to apply). 2. Brendan Fraser revealed on a recent episode of “The Kelly Clarkson Show” that he had a near-death experience during a stunt gone wrong while filming “The Mummy.” The Oscar winner said he was “choked out accidentally” during the scene in which he had to be hanged from the gallows in the Egyptian prison, which resulted in him being resuscitated by on-set medical personnel. 3. In the desert race to Hamunaptra, you see camels and horses. Horses are faster (on flat land), but camels are adapted to life in the desert. Even though they do eventually have to eat and drink, camels can live off the fat reserves inside their humps, their long eyelashes keep dust out of their eyes, and their feet are big and wide to keep them from sinking into the sand as they move. 4. After Evelyn unknowingly awakens Imhotep by reading The Book Of The Dead (which is actually a funerary scroll in real life) and the locust swarm flies into the encampment at Hamunaptra, the locusts crawling on the Egyptologist are actually grasshoppers that were refrigerated to make them sluggish. On a similar note, the scarabs in real life were merely dung beetles, not vicious flesh eaters.

"Death is only the beginning." Fun Fact: The library disaster was done in one take. It would have taken an entire day to re-shoot if a mistake had been made. That's Hot Fact: With the exception of a loin cloth, a few pieces of jewelry, and panties, Patricia Velasquez's costume consists entirely of body paint, which took four hours to apply. The white nightgown Rachel Weisz wore when the ship was attacked became transparent when it got wet and had to be digitally painted white during post production so the film could keep its PG-13 rating. The Medjai were originally supposed to be tattooed from head to toe, but Stephen Sommers vetoed it because he thought Oded Fehr was "too good-looking" to be covered up. Historical Fact: Imhotep is a real historic figure, but he wasn't the High Priest of Pharaoh Seti I; he was the architect who developed the first pyramids in ancient Egypt, most notably the Pyramid of Pharaoh Djoser at Saqqara around 2600 BC. His ability was such that he was later said to have descended from the gods. His name means "one who comes in peace" and as far as anyone knows, he was not a despised villain as portrayed in the movie, but much more likely revered as the architect and physician he was. Seti I was a real pharaoh, but he ruled around 1300 BC, almost 1300 years after Imhotep had died. Anuk-sun-amun was an Egyptian princess who was half-sister (and wife) to Pharaoh Tutankhamun. They lived in the mid-1300s BCE, decades before Seti I's rule. When King Tutankhamen's tomb was found on November 4, 1922, the person in charge was Howard Carter, who was employed and funded by George Herbert, 5th Earl of Carnarvon. Carnarvon's daughter, Lady Evelyn Herbert accompanied Carter to Egypt to view the discovery. Rachel Weisz's character is named Evelyn Carnahan. Originally, her character was meant to be Evelyn Carnarvon. She and her brother were to be the children of the "cursed" Lord Carnarvon. The only evidence of this left in the film is in the line where Evelyn (Rachel Weisz) tells O'Connell (Brendan Fraser) that her father was a "very, very famous explorer" and novelization goes into a bit more detail on her back story.

Howdy from Texas! Just another movie suggestion. A film based on a true story. It's a real Father Son movie that I know you both will enjoy immensely. It's a 90s film, I believe it was put out in 1993 , I could be wrong, but regardless it's a really great film but it came out the same time as some really big blockbuster movies, Like Mrs. Doubtfire, Shindler's List, The Firm, Fatal Instinct, What's eating Gilbert Grape just to name a few. This great movie was simply lost in the hype. Had it come out in almost any other year it would no doubt be a much better known film. And there have only been a small handful of reactors taking it on. The films name is: Searching For Bobby Fisher. It stars Max Pomeranc , Ben Kingsley, Lawrence Fishburne, William H. Macy, just to name a few. I really hope you will consider watching and reacting to this film. It's a drama, that is heartwarming, joyful, sad, hopeful, and best of all, a true story.

"the Mummy Returns" is even better than the first one!

I respectfully disagree that ”The Mummy Returns” was better than the first. IMHO, the first movie “The Mummy” was the best. “The Mummy Returns” was good, but, for me, “The Mummy” is so much more re-watchable. Just my opinion, no offense intended. 😊

Lord Carnarvon sponsored the dig of Howard Carter, who unearthed Tutankhamun. Carnarvon famously died shortly after the opening of the tomb in 1923.

The Mummy (1999) should really be recognised for how groundbreaking the effects were for the time. Nominated for Visual Effects Oscar that same year: The Phantom Menace and The Matrix (The Matrix winning). The Mummy wasn't even nominated. Stuart Little was. FUBAR. More was done to advance visual effects in The Mummy than any other film that year, in my opinion.

British occupation of Egypt = 1882-1956 CE. Soldiers are French Foreign Legion. Medjay = ancient Nubian desert-rangers. Scarab beetles are actually quite motherly.
