I always like the theory about the brother Johnathan. He's intelligent, able to fight if he needs to, and capable in some fields. Put that together with the time frame of the movie, his drinking, and his quote about sometimes wanting to join the dead made some people think he was a WWI vet.

The enlistments where huge, so probably he and his dad fougth (and probably died in it in the case of the father)...because he was a ritch kid in a colony; he may have not seen all that mutch action (meaning the major trench battles in Europe) but enough to have basic combat training and having seen some stuff and some survivor complex

Rick O'Connel, played by Brendan Fraser is a hell of an actor and provided the majority of his own stunts! This is what led to the Mummy series being so loved and respected! He worked his BUTT OFF preparing and doing these stunts and to a degree he did suffer fro them. His charm and physicality is what makes this character come to life as much as it does, even over the decades! I'm so glad you finally began the Mummy collection! Rachel Weiss is another fantastic actress who provided the perfect amount of softness alongside her co star Brendan. I also love movies and books on ancient civilizations and period films. Just a wonderful film series all around!

I grew up in the '70s, and we were all afraid of quicksand. Tons of movies and shows from the '50s, '60s and '70s had people getting caught in quicksand, and we all thought the stuff was everywhere and people fell in all the time. We had news stories and the like telling people what to do if ever caught in quicksand. Decades later, I have yet to see actual quicksand, and have never heard of anyone getting caught in it, let alone dying. Turns out getting stuck is rare, and dying is even more rare. People usually only get legs stuck, maybe up to their chest at worst, and dying is usually the result of a rising tide drowning you, or exposure to elements, rather than getting sucked under the quicksand.

YESSSSSS you finally crossed off another one of my Top 10 films! And this was one of those breathtaking-in-theaters type movies. Seeing this on the big screen stuck with me as much as the Star Wars Original Trilogy being back in theaters in 1997, Top Gun: Maverick and maybe one or two others. What a fantastic film. Fraser has stated that if they bring the same cast back and the script is faithful and done with love, he WILL reprise his role at some point during his comeback. I have got my fingers crossed.

Good news for the crew of this movie. The scene with the tumbling bookshelves only took one take. No having to reset the mess. It was done by having someone dressed as Evie tip over the first bookshelf. Once the camera had followed the domino effect, the actress, having just been below camera level, just had to pop up into frame.

The trick with the mirrors was tested by "Mythbusters", and it works - as long as the sun is in exactly the right place, which it usually isn't, and it moves during the day. Everyone is incredible on their respective roles (especially Kevin J O'Connor as Beni) but there's just something special about the 3 leads - Brendan, Rachel, and Arnold - that helps this movie overshadow everything else in this genre for me. Oh, and Winston. We love Winston. We particularly love how, the moment he finds out he could die on this mission, nothing else matters and he's in with his whole entire British heart.

One of many inaccuracies in the movie, as the Israelites were never slaves, there's no evidence in any Egyptian records or physical evidence of their exodus across the desert into Israel. The Egyptians didn't use slaves to build pyramids and monuments anyway, they used unskilled labourers to haul the stones, skilled stonemasons and brick layers to place them and carpenters to build the sleds and ramps. Still a great movie, a classic switch your brain off adventure flick.

@@Ali-bu6lo Well ye lol, obviously it's a comedy/horror/adventure type thing in the same vein as Indiana Jones, nobody was expecting realism, but they didn't have to make shit up about Egypt (like making a 5th canopic jar, saying they pulled out the heart which Egyptians didn't actually do). Saying that though they do get a lot accurate, like the hieroglyphs. I watched a video of an Egyptologist translating every scene with them in, and they match up with what they're supposed to say surprisingly well. Compare that to Tom Cruise's Mummy film, where they just scribbled a bunch of random hieroglyphs that don't mean anything out of context, copied from surviving parchments of the book of the dead. Most of the hieroglyphs I think were more early AD Coptic writings than ancient Egyptian.

And within that idea everyone "knows" that Egypt had slaves as their manual labor. It was simply something the writers took as fact because that's likely how they were raised and wrote it into the movie as such.

Yeah, i just read up on that. It caused him to black out and at no point did he need resuscitated or stop breathing so to say he nearly died is a real exaggeration and this thing people do of taking what happened and stretching it to it's most extreme interpretation i do not like (you guys believe all these kind of stories and repeat them for different movies as fact with zero research). He had crew around him and would have never been in legitimate danger of being left to choke to death. He basically had the equivalent of a choke hold put on him therefor blacked out. Scary at the time i have no doubt.

Odd the subtitles were off. But the Imhotep/Beni exchange was more or less Beni's prayer in Hebrew, Imhotep recognized it as "the language of the slaves" he then says "I may yet have a use for you". While extending the gold he says "And the rewards will be great" While shaking the broken Canopic Jar he asks "Where are the other sacred jars" a moment of foreshadowing to the hunting down of the rest of the Americans that opened the box.

For me, beauty is more than just physical looks, and in this movie Rachel Weisz checks all of the boxes. A smart, brave, nerdy librarian who *also* happens to be stunningly beautiful? Yes, please. Another movie from the same guy that has a lot of the same vibes to it (and also has the actor who played Beni in it - he likes using that guy) that has been mostly forgotten is the Lovecraftian action-adventure-horror movie Deep Rising. It came out the year before The Mummy, and some of the CGI shows it, but it's still loads of over-the-top campy fun. I don't want to say too much else about it in case you decide to watch it, because spoilers, but I definitely recommend it.

A romance with 1 true kiss. a love story tragedy in the background. Just all around style and warmth and humor on top of a lovely mummy movie. That destruction scene at the end was so good that it almost got the film company in trouble with the country where they were filming. The wall at the front is an actual wall, and a national land mark. When they saw the footage of that destruction, they actually thought that the wall had been destroyed as well.

One of the most underrated films ever in my opinion & the best adaption to the classic Mummy. Also...Rachel Weisz & Brendan Fraiser have no right to be so attractive in this movie!!! My favorite thing about this movie is the way all the gory scenes were suggested by shadows or off camera with the other characters reacting to it. It was a brilliant homage to the old Boris Karloff Mummy movies of the 1930s. Those movies played on Saturday night "Creature Features" when I was a kid back in the 70s

The VFX team came to my school to give a presentation on this the year it came out, the tech they were working with was insane at the time, it was an amazing behind the scenes look into how they made everything come to life, no pun intended. That sequence where O'Connell is swinging around plowing through all those mummies was great because everything that wasn't him and the sword were CGI, they just built and animated the characters around his swings.

Awww... you missed my favorite line in the movie! "Oh.... My... God... Winston! Pedal faster!". 🤣 I love this movie.... it's just the right balance of high adventure story, and campy comedy. I think you need to watch it again, and turn on subtitles to see the subtitles... they were there! I swear!

Saw this at a cinema matinee when it dropped. Amazing! Wasn't sure about the casting of Encino Man as the lead but DAMN if Brendan Frasier isn't a treasure. Should watch The Whale. Easily the best performance of his career. I remember the ride. Did it about 20 years ago here in Orlando. The decor of the queuing was AMAZING. "Let me see your war face" ded lol

As someone who is claustrophobic as well, I think I could handle going into a pyramid nowadays because there is usually a clearly marked exit, but if it’s somewhere that I couldn’t easily find my way out of, then I’d start to freak out. A good movie suggestion for a fellow claustrophobic, is The Descent. 17:59 Actually on soft sand, camels are faster than horses because they have wider feet, same principle as snowshoes.

*The Mummy is one of my favorite movies. I love Rachel Weisz as the brainy, beautiful leading lady, Brendan Fraser as the adventurous man of action, and Arnold Vosloo as the chief villain. Also, they did get the mummification practices correct when Evelyn described how ancient Egyptians removed people's brains (minus a slight omission): The embalmers used the hook to also punch a hole in the person's skull so the brain drained out when they were rolled over. And I always get jumpscared when Jonathan is toying around in that damned sarcophagus, no matter how many times I've seen the movie.* *Side trivia:* *1. In the scene introducing her as Ankh-su-namun, model/actress Patricia Velásquez was completely naked with the exception of a loin cloth, a few pieces of jewelry, pasties & body paint (body paint took four hours to apply).* *2. Brendan Fraser revealed on a recent episode of “The Kelly Clarkson Show” that he had a near-death experience during a stunt gone wrong while filming “The Mummy.” The Oscar winner said he was “choked out accidentally” during the scene in which he had to be hanged from the gallows in the Egyptian prison, which resulted in him being resuscitated by on-set medical personnel.* *3. In the desert race to Hamunaptra, you see camels and horses. Horses are faster (on flat land), but camels are adapted to life in the desert. Even though they do eventually have to eat and drink, camels can live off the fat reserves inside their humps, their long eyelashes keep dust out of their eyes, and their feet are big and wide to keep them from sinking into the sand as they move.* *4. After Evelyn unknowingly awakens Imhotep by reading The Book Of The Dead (which is actually a funerary scroll in real life) and the locust swarm flies into the encampment at Hamunaptra, the locusts crawling on the Egyptologist are actually grasshoppers that were refrigerated to make them sluggish. On a similar note, the scarabs in real life were merely dung beetles, not vicious flesh eaters.*

Was just thinking. The cutting out of his tongue would be a huge curse for ancient Egyptians. As I remember, a part of their afterlife belief is that you have to recite a specific death spell or be doomed .
