I have to say, the bit with Imhotep clinging to the edge of the pit, ignoring the continuity error that put him there, is probably the best part of the film. It just manages to convey a *lot* in a very short span of time.

I always loved this movie as a kid, but as I got older the plot contrivances became so apparent. The only thing I'll buy is Evie's Egyptian past life. Her Egyptian heritage was hinted at in the first movie when she was drunk at the campfire. She mentioned she was part Egyptian and wasn't satisfied with her job as a librarian. There could have been a much better movie if they focused on Evie being the protector she was meant to be with her modern day Medjay (Rick and Ardyth). She felt responsible for fucking things up in the first movie and was willing to fix it. The potential was there for a better bridge between the films.

I hate how so many movies and games play Anubis as a bad guy. He really wasn't. Can we stop with the whole Death=Evil thing? So, here is something that bugs me about the "Scorpion King Myth" that Evie mentions when they find the bracelet. She says that there is no evidence of him being real, none. No Artifacts, no records, nothing. If that is the case, why didn't Evie assume that the Scorpion image was for Serqet? She was the Goddess of breathing, healing, and protection and took the Scorpion as her symbol; like the Falcon with Horus. As an Egyptologist, that should've been her first guess. Not some mythical king who has no proof of being real.

And the fact Anubis sends a scorpion to Mister The Rock.... noooo, a jackal, or hell a scarab would be more fitting. Think if the Scorpion king hand to fight a jackal and eat it's heart to prove his worth, or be devoured by Anubis-sent scarabs to be remade as a Pure Warrior... and then dicked over later. Also why not use SET instead!? Anubis is not evil where as Set IS quite the vile bastard in just about all lore-setups. Hell, Set is the God of WAR, Chaos and storms. Anubis is a JUST god that would balance your heart against a Feather to measure if you're worthy of passing into the next life or forever be stuck and wander the underworld.

There is very little to be praised about this movie, save for production design, acting, and music. But there is one amazing thing this movie brought us; a blooper of someone directing a mummy in a glass display case during the resurrection scene, and he motions with a hand to his ear and a slight shake of his head, indicating he can’t hear the directions shouted at him. It legit cracks me up every time, a good clip to look at if you’re having a bad day.

It seems Hollywood Thinks that if they shoehorn in pointless characters, that will draw a bigger audience who will hopefully see that new character as themselves. So they were hoping annoying children (not all children) would be drawn to see a movie in which they are the damsel in distress. I saw this in the first Toby spiderman when the people throw stuff at Green Goblin. I even heard people declare, "That's me, That's what I would do" as if they wouldn't shit their pants and hide or run after the first explosion.

So if this grown woman is the reincarnation of Ankhesenamen (probably misspelled), what happened when Imhotep resurrected her in the first film? I saw this film when it first hit theaters, and was playing a lot of Diablo II at the time. Those little pygmies were pretty much 'Undead Fetishes' from Act III. There is a scene where you see them using all three weapons commonly associated with them including an oversized knife. All it needed was a witch doctor standing on the shoulders of another breathing fire and resurecting the killed ones.

@15:00 The comment about key ignition systems not being invented for another 16 years isn't quite correct. 1949 is when the first turn-key ignitions that integrated the starter appeared, but earlier vehicles did include an ignition key. Vehicles that used a key prior to 1949 required the key to be set to the on position, and then the starter had to be manually triggered either by foot pedal or a hand crank. That being said, many of the cars in this movie were actually 1936/37 models.

I wonder if the studio execs pushed for the kid character because of the Kid's WB show that was airing on Saturday mornings at the time. It would align well considering not only did it start airing the same year this movie was released, but this was also a year after the popular Jackie Chan Adventures wrapped up it's first season, and Jade, Jackie's troublesome niece, was the standout character. Honestly, she was the real main character in the series, but I digress. My guess is the studios thought they had a potential gold mine with a new toy line and believed having a kid being the central character was what made Jackie Chan a smash hit, and not just the fact that Jade, along with everyone else, were likable characters. So they probably pushed the kid into the movie, not only for corporate synergy, but also to keep kids from getting confused by wondering where their "favorite kid character" was at.
@deusdeaconReviews
@deusdeaconReviews 9 күн бұрын
yeah thats a good point, and exactly how "the execs" think
@bigk9000
@bigk9000 9 күн бұрын
@@deusdeaconReviews Unfortunately, I've seen this all before. T_T In fact, going back to what I said about Jackie Chan Adventures, I strongly believe they did pulled the same stunt with that show. If you watch how the show's titular character, Jackie Chan, is portrayed in the show's pilot compared to the rest of the series, you'll notice an odd difference. In the pilot, Jackie Chan is not only more the focus, but, if I recall correctly, he was more confrontational with Uncle and even more of a playful troublemaker. Behaving more like his real-life counterpart does in the movies , and not the "always following the rules" paragon of virtue he became for the entire show afterwards. I have no proof of this, but if I were to guess, the creators of the showed the pilot as a part of their pitch to the Kid's WB exec. While they liked the show enough to green light it, they most likely provided some notes -- a common Hollywood practice, sadly -- to make Jade more the focus. The only reason THIS worked is because I believe the writers had Jade's character already established in their heads, and they decided to lean more into her wilder, adventurous side, always getting into trouble, and making Jackie Chan into the straight man who always has to save her. While not exactly trite, it's a very common trope, even before the show's creation. While I loved that show just fine, it always baffled me why they'd have a globe trotting adventure cartoon starring Jackie Chan and you make him take a backseat to Jade. Again, she's a great character, but her name isn't the one in the title. And it's not like the studio execs didn't know who Jackie Chan was, either. This was a year after Rush Hour blew up in theaters, which was how Jackie Chan became a mainstream name in the first place, so it's not like they didn't know who he was and what he was known for. I'm sorry. I know this sounds WAY off topic considering your review was about The Mummy, but it always drove me crazy when execs continue to do that. The FoxKids exec tried to do the same thing with Batman: The Animated Series, and J. Michael Straczynski quit as Lead Writer and Story Editor for "The Real Ghostbusters", because Q5, NBC's "Think Tank", used focus group data they completely fabricated saying kids wanted to see other kids in their cartoons (among other things that were both racist and misogynistic). In fact, what JMS said in an interview about their claim is a near echo of what you said in your review: "When I read Batman comics as a kid, I wanted to be Batman, not Robin." Again, sorry this has turned into a "written essay", but I've been holding all this in for years! XD

Had Beni not died and made it out of Hamunaptra at the end of the first movie...I wonder what it would've been like if he was in the Mummy Returns. No question he would've been in the sequel if he survived the first movie. I think Rick would've had less abusive behavior towards him and been nicer or maybe he would've been on Imoteps side again. His stupidity and falling behind while trying to make it out of the closing down tomb in the first movie is the reason he died so in other words it's his own fault he wasn't in the sequel.

deus made me realize how pointless the moving vehicle fight scene was other than to add a new kind of action/suspense for a bit lol. i didnt even realize the two times i've seen this that since she's their goal theres no reason to not stop.

Wait... was it just a coincidence that the Pharaoh married Anuksun? or does he always do that with the people who guard him. If so it's a good thing his daughter didn't win that contest, though it also raises whether or not it was setup for his daughter to lose as surely then his wife would have been sent miles away from him to protect the bracelet.

Ever thought 1 question... If Evelyn made Imoteph mortal in last movie taking off his immortal soul and god-like powers, why and how he still has them in this movie??? :P

cause they resurrected him again, they even used the black book of the dead like in the first film.

@@deusdeaconReviews Well yes. but in the first film when he died again Imoteph wasn't cursed again he just died as mortal in black goo.... so why not all the mummies in British Museum didn't have supernatural powers because black book revived them too? Just Imoteph got them and he was still immortal god-like monster even though he died as a mortal man... Funny :D

Always got slightly confused by this movie tbh. Was Rick meant to be a reincarnation of oziris? Because that frankly makes NO sense, he doesn't show any traits that would imply him being the god of the underworld. If he were a reincarnation of montu on the other hand, it would have made it easy for us to see where he got his fighting skills from. Was it because imotohep or the Scorpion king were meant to be Seth? Therefore he was meant to die and it makes the stakes higher? Nor do I understand why we have a fighting scene in this as Evelyn thousands of years ago but she NEVER inherited it in the first film, I thought she just learned to fight through Rick, but this plot point just adds more confusion to the mix.

Actually The Tattoo is not so much a Retcon as much as a Forced Idea ^_^. It does make sense from the continuity established in the first film. Oconnell says that he grew up as an orphan in cairo to E.V. in the first movie, where as he states in this movie he got the tattoo and was taught the Sign & Counter Sign, Give a kid a tattoo and tell them there is a meaning and what it is, and in most cases that child will ensure that he doesnt forget it, even repeating it to themselves quite often. Then there is the tattoo itself, In the first move He wears Leather Wristbands in the scenes with Ardeth Bay which would have hidden or more likely Obstructed Ardeth from seeing the tattoo, Hense only seeing it now when Rick is Band-less. So Not fully a Retroactive Change in the Continuity but a Forced Idea that is backed by the Events of the first movie. My Thought is that they had, and idea, and used the points I listed as they Reinforcement to that Stupid Concept to give it Credibility. OH OH OH Also this movie is less Witty Humor in Dialogue & Relies More Heavily in Comedic Scenes or Actions, I Remember, In my theatre more people laughed at scenes with no dialogue such as the Case with the Pigmies and There involvement with Johnathan, Admittedly when he gets the one Bad Guy Killed there is the Lines about the sacred stones and not being crossed, but mostly people laughed at the implied Comedy like the pigmy catching the dynamite and blowing up the Tree Bridge dooming the rest of the charging pack, for example. Hope you dont see this as a negative, As I love your Videos and After Watching all reviews am waiting for the next one as You Covered on of my Beloved Cheesy movies recently and wonder if you think mark hamill dislikes his guyver role more than last jedi as i never have heard mark speak about that role, nor anyone actually asking him about it.

OH also The Car used in the movie is accurate, in that what they used was a Duesenberg Model J which was a 1933 vehicle that when you look at photo's of the cars interior seems to have a place for the key behind the steering wheel. which doesnt make sense based on history about when key ignition was invented, but hey You were Both right about ignition engines to you & a Car that was of the time period.

This is what IMDB is for. or Google. Why can't people be bothered to hit the microphone button and speak to have their device give them the answer ? is that too much effort for them ? Or type the question into a search engine instead of a youtube comment section... they have to read the answer either way.
