Brendan Fraser told a great story about how during his fight scene with Jet Li Jet came within an inch of hitting Brendan during the first take and instead hit a lock of his hair, then in the second take Jet hit him in the exact same lock of hair, then again on the third take. Brendan then realized Jet wasn’t missing, he was aiming for his hair so he could precisely gauge his distance so he wouldn’t actually hit Brendan. Yeah, Jet Li is that damn good.

My only problem with this movie is the casting of the son, who is not like his previous movie character at all. And the replacement of Rachel Weisz.....it's..... serviceable. I really can't get over how much of a departure the son's character is overall😂
@Lava91point04 ай бұрын
I never liked his character, He comes across as very aggressive. I'll never understand why they went with the "estranged father son" angle. The kid was his pride and joy in the second one, and the kid seemed to really love his dad, the bounced off each other. Here it's like he hates him, and just wants to kick his ass.

@Lava91point0 exactly it's like they expected us to forget everything they went through in the last film. Like that made that movie so much more beautiful. Because you don't get that in movies like this often/ done well.

I think she just meant the plots are always similar, like ok yeah it's about mummies and tombs, and Indiana Jones style escapades, but it'd be fun if it wasn't just about oooh an evil undead mummy that wants revenge and to rule the world, 3 times in a row.

A good point XD; but also one of the reasons why, even when we love the characters, they jus can fighting mummies so many times before it's repetitive. There may be some variations, though: some Peruvian mummies were not discovered in tombs entirely dedicated to their eternal rest. Some where ranom people mummified due to the conditions of the place they died. In another example (Mexico), the Guanajuato Mummies are in a permanent exhibit, and they are accidentally mummified corpses that were buried normally, the ground had the right mixture of conditions to mummify the corpses. In both cases, they would not come out of a ceremonial tomb, should they rise to wreack havoc.

Tomb of the Dragon Emperor does portray General Ming as a sympathetic character, even though he betrays the Emperor. His motives are romantic, but he still disobeys the Emperor’s commands and ultimately faces punishment for his actions. The film frames him as a tragic hero, sacrificing his loyalty to his ruler for love, while the Emperor, portrayed as cruel and power-hungry, becomes the villain. This moral framing does seem inconsistent, especially when compared to the way betrayal is treated in the original Mummy films. In The Mummy and The Mummy Returns, Imhotep is indeed cast as the villain because of his forbidden love and betrayal of the Pharaoh. The movies emphasize his punishment as just, portraying the Pharaoh as the rightful authority-even though, by similar reasoning, Imhotep’s love for Anck-su-namun could have been romanticized in the same way as Ming’s love for Zi Yuan. The thematic inconsistency can feel unsettling. Both films deal with betrayal, but with opposing moral judgments: The Mummy films punish lovers who go against societal rules, while Tomb of the Dragon Emperor romanticizes a similar defiance. In this way, Imhotep’s punishment appears hypocritical when we see General Ming celebrated for a similar act of defiance, implying that the portrayal might be biased by the cultural context or the storyline's demands. It certainly raises questions about how the films define loyalty, justice, and what qualifies someone as a hero or villain.

I'm surprised you two actually dug this one. So many people hate it, which I never understood. It has it's problems and it definitely not as good as the first two, but it's still a great time and I like that it did something different with moving the story to China. The Egypt stuff would've gotten a little old. As far as Alex's accent, he apparently went to boarding school in America. He pretty much grew up here, so it's not that far fetched that his British accent would've faded over time. Also, I never knew Rachel Weisz didn't do the movie because of the script. I guess she was bullshitting because the explanation she gave at the time was the baby thing. Maria Bello did a fine job taking over the role, but she and Brendan simply don't have chemistry. I hope Rachel comes back for the 4th one if it gets made. And make sure you two watch The Scorpion King.

General Ming’s betrayal indeed highlights an important aspect of loyalty and respect, especially within the cultural and historical context of the Emperor’s rule. The Emperor placed immense trust in Ming, not only as a military leader but as a confidant, and Ming’s betrayal, particularly for personal gain and desire, is deeply dishonorable in that setting. By sending the witch to negotiate on his behalf rather than seeking forgiveness himself, Ming further disrespects the bond and trust they once shared. In the Emperor’s eyes, such betrayal from a trusted general was not only a personal affront but also a threat to the stability of his empire. Harshly punishing Ming would therefore serve as a powerful example against treason-a decision consistent with the values and authority expected of a ruler in his time. Your perspective on the O’Connells as looters sheds light on a very different, less romanticized view of their character and motivations. They’re portrayed as adventurers, but their actions-taking treasures and artifacts from ancient cultures-mirror the real-life British exploitation of colonized nations. The O’Connells, as representatives of British influence, act without regard for the heritage and sanctity of these ancient sites, effectively plundering other cultures for their own gain and thrill. In that sense, they’re symbolic of the broader historical context where British expeditions often seized cultural treasures under the guise of exploration, ultimately stripping these lands of priceless artifacts and wealth. This interpretation reframes the O’Connells not as noble heroes but as exploiters who profit from the ancient treasures and mysticism of Egypt and China, indifferent to the harm or cultural loss their actions might cause. By focusing on these perspectives, you’ve highlighted how the narratives can reveal deeper, more uncomfortable truths about colonialism and betrayal, showing how these stories can shift dramatically based on who is seen as the true hero or villain.

God damn this might be long. The Mummy 3 lost when it lost Stephen Sommers as the writter, Rachel Weisz as Evie and Egyptian culture as the lore. 1) Sure we can understand that maybe they ran out of ideas related to egypt and wanted to reach other cultures, still it was not wise to change too many things at once. 2) We are supposed to believe Rick and Evie started having problems in their marriage and Rachel Weisz looked old enough to play the mother of a 20 yo. I know she was 30 yo in The Mummy but still, she did not look like a mother of 20yo. Surely, it is believable that the character moved by knowledge suddenly wanted to retire. 3) The kid that was booksmart became like his father and nothing like his mother. Makes sense too. 4) You can tell they didn't rewrite the script and it was always just that for Evie. Be the reason the mummy is revived and nothing else, while in the first 2 movies she was essential to the plot. I don't think Oscar Winner Rachel Weisz did such a bad choice by leaving considering they ruined her character and the franchise. Still... enjoyable for the lore, legends Michelle Yeo and Jet Li. Jonathan was also decent. Not much else I'm always hopeful they're gonna revive the franchise and cast Weisz back but i'm afraid they'll just use Rick and Evie as set ups for another bland protagonist like the son. Edit: Also, this was the only movie of the franchise i was able to see in theaters because I was finally old enough and what a let down. I grew up rewatching the first two every time it aired on the Portuguese TV. I remember watching it premiere after midnight because it was too scary and I was awake and looked at the tv and fell in love with Evie being so smart, brave and headstrong. The movie was such a hit that they started airing it during the day time on the weekends. Every month you'd get the 1st or the sequel.

They made a big mistake in this one by not getting Rachel Weisz back as Evie. Nothing against Maria Bello, she's a terrific actress, but it killed the natural vibe. The actor that played Alex could've been excused for the American accent if they had thrown in a tidbit about him going to school in America due to WWII. Otherwise, it's a fun film, and the plot/storyline did fit with the first two films. Wonderful reaction and analysis Guys! ❤❤❤

I felt that Maria and Brendan had good chemistry but not the Rachel/Brendan chemistry for Rick and Evie. I think the pairing could have worked if Maria was Rick's cousin and they're just good buddies who like adventure. Then make some excuse for why Evie is away, e.g. she's giving lectures on ancient Egypt to various universities in the Americas (and the Peru stuff is then started by her).

Got the same sentiment as you guys..no chemistry between Brendan and Maria..and grown up Alex looks like a younger bro than Brendan’s son..

🌪️ interesting fact: the mummy 2 came out in 2001. They followed that up with the scorpion king with the rock as the main lead in 2002 as a vehicle for the rock. Every other scorpion king movie never had the rock in it ever again, he just did the first one. Honestly, I have no idea why they came out with the memory three unless they were trying to revive the series, but not sure.

🌪️ honestly, I agree that the chemistry killed it for me for this movie because that’s the part that I love the most. but to be honest, I think again unconfirmed because I haven’t really checked it or remember, but I do believe that they did not really have that chemistry on set either. Not that they had problems but it just didn’t quite drive.

my only problem was no Rachel Weisz, other than that, I had fun with this one too

I like the movie, it was hard to get into it fully though. You're right the chemistry between Frasier and Bello just wasn't there.

the contrast in how these characters are judged by their actions highlights some double standards in the storytelling. Imhotep, in The Mummy, is condemned as a villain for his actions-even though he only kills when necessary to regain his full form. His motivations are, in a way, understandable: he’s driven by his love for Anck-su-namun and is acting out of a desire to be reunited with her, albeit through dark means. In contrast, Zi Yuan’s character in Tomb of the Dragon Emperor is portrayed with more sympathy, despite the fact that her actions arguably cause more harm. She not only curses the Emperor, but her spell also leads to the deaths of countless soldiers who are simply following orders. Her vendetta against the Emperor causes widespread suffering, and yet the film glosses over this destruction, treating her as a righteous figure seeking justice. This creates a strange moral inconsistency: her large-scale actions are forgiven or even justified, while Imhotep’s comparatively targeted actions are condemned. This double standard might be a result of the different cultural contexts and character arcs in the films, but it does feel uneven. In both cases, the characters act out of love, yet the narrative chooses to frame one as evil and the other as justified. It seems that Imhotep’s punishment for transgressing authority (by betraying the Pharaoh) is harsher, whereas Zi Yuan’s rebellion against the Emperor is romanticized, potentially reflecting a storytelling bias that fails to treat similar actions with equal moral weight.

Sadly Rachel Weisz didn’t come back because she didn’t like the script and didn’t want to make a bad or boring movie. Sadly she was right.

It was due to scheduling. "The U.K.-based ES Magazine interviewed her in the Nov. 16 issue back in 2008. In it, Weisz said that she had never even read the script and that the scheduling of its production was what put her off the project."

While Maria Bello was a great actress, I still preferred Rachel Weisz. I just feel she fit the role better and her chemistry with Brendan Fraser was also better. As for the son, the actor Luke Ford is Canadian born, but raised in Australia, so what you heard was likely his Australian accent coming through. I'm not sure why they didn't have him through a British accent instead of an American one. Maybe for some reason he found an American accent easier to do
