I think they need to cross the wall first in order for that to happen. Now I haven't seen this movie in a long time so undoubtedly I've forgotten some things, but if I remember this correctly The Dragon Emperor's speech before the peasants rose again mentioned once they cross the wall they'll become indestructible. So, you're basically right in this regard; it's just that our heroes prevented that from happening.

If they tried to take themselves super serious, it would be cringe. They just owned the fact they're a cheesy adventure film, and it became fun again. A lot like Pirates of the Caribbean. POTC was so over the top and just owned it, giving them their entertaining vibe.

They were “Captured Soldiers” You don’t see prisoners of war armed to the teeth. Because they’re exactly that. “Prisoners” That’s why they all have raggedy clothes and are using shovels and other tools. General Ming on the other hand was thrown into the pile of dead on top of all the others with his armor on.
