I am retired Police Officer from Merseyside. You may be interested in the following. ...... Elizabeth Peers. 10 yrs . Wendell St L8. Toxteth. Raped and murdered 1905. No one ever arrested. Circa 2010 I got involved with a case of a family being disturbed by the ghost of a small child in their house. In those days the police took and interest in the community !!!! I had no knowledge of any crime at this house at the time. Cut a two months story short. The rear passageway of this terraced house was the venue of the offence and location of the body found. I had the cold case files retrieved from the archives but very little remained. I had the local RC Priest visit the home and say prayers at the house. The ghost girl never returned. She is buried only a half mile away at Smithdown Cemetery. Of note is that over 30,000 people turned out to her funeral. There was a suspect, but he was never charged.

As you rightly said, child murders are the most distressing of all crimes. I am amazed that it only took five minutes deliberation by the inquest jury to decide that someone else committed the murder. I also find it hard to believe that the police watched Rush after this especially during the war. Sex offenders like Rush don’t stop unless they are stopped in some way. It beggars belief that Rush continued to live at the same address for many years after this crime. Poor beautiful little Vera was let down badly, as were her parents. It sickens me to think that this man had 30 more years of life and died peacefully. I wonder if he succeeded in committing more crimes, I would be extremely surprised if he didn’t.

The police made a very serious mistake here. When Rush was taken in for questioning, they told him about the ‘finger stall’ (bandage) which had been found in the victim’s elbow. Remember, this was at a period when many people in manual jobs would have regularly sported bandages, often made at home, not purchased from Boots. Occupational hazard. Thriftiness. He agreed to provide samples of the home-made bandages he claimed to wear. And they let him go home and produce them later at his convenience. Subjected to microscopic analysis, those bandages proved to be different in composition from the one found on the victim. Unsurprising, as he had plenty of time to destroy or conceal the original material. Nor was there any evidence of a chemist selling him bandages. Given the lack of any other hard evidence placing him near the child when she disappeared, that was that. I feel the police screwed this one up badly, and they knew it. Hence, there was no prosecution after the inquest.

Really very disturbing story perfectly narrated. The way you cover this type of man’s modus operandi has changed little in the last 100 years. Though we may be far more aware of stranger danger today, this case still leaves us baffled & shattered that anyone could contemplate the murder of a child purely for sexual gratification??? The haunting terror of this innocent little girls final hours, leaves me in no doubt that the death penalty still has a place in todays judicial system.

Around 1931, my MIL was pursued by an elder of her church and only escaped SA by climbing a tree. When she got home and told her mother, her mother whipped her for "tempting " the pervert. Maybe the jury had the same victim-blaming attitude as my MIL's mother.

Hi Mark, great to see you back again. Like you, I have a horror of child murders. Consequently, I wouldn't usually watch a video like this, but I knew you would handle this tragedy respectfully, and my confidence was not misplaced. Usually, I try to put myself in the place of a jury member and only find the defendant guilty if I am absolutely sure of their culpability. In this case, I am sure the coroner's Court got it wrong. There was ample evidence for a full trial. One can't help wondering if Rush had committed more serious offences than indecent exposure in the past and been equally fortunate. Sex offenders usually continue to offend until they are caught.
