This second instalment of the Into the Heart of Darkness series looks at the Congo Free State (1885-1908), which was privately owned by and in a personal union with Leopold II of Belgium. Leopold's reign in the Congo eventually earned infamy on account of the atrocities perpetrated on the locals in the extraction of ivory, rubber and minerals.
