The irony that's never lost on me is the fact that games like this due to their art style /aesthetic were hated at the time (mostly in the US) and are now loved and prized because of the stylized graphics holding up so much better than games that tried to go for realism. It's a lot like that time between people hating 2D and Loving it again. Attitudes shift so quickly, what once was considered awful and old is now beloved and considered ahead of it's time.

Hence the refernce "ahead of it's time" because that's exactly what this game was lol. Me personally I would've enjoyed playing this had I known about it as a kid, but now I don't really have the time. RIP

During the PS1's heyday over here in the Philippines, 99% of PS1 games were yo-ho-ho'd, and we got games from Japan and the Western markets. I owned and played this game, and loved it... but I could never get to complete that darned Rhythm Attack.

Hell yeah, 50-60 peso CD PS1 games that are gacha in which it's a 50-50% chance of working or not. I remember me and my dad bought a Biohazard: Gun Survivor disc thinking it was a different game from RE: Gun Survivor. My dad finished it in one sitting while I watched the whole time then we returned it the next day and said it didn't work. Good times.

@@highrollerdefault Multiple reasons, they're very much about style not content, can't really deal with more complicated games and are quite slow. Still remember pre-ordering Megabyte Punch around 2011 (after playing a demo on a con) with the promise from the devs first hand of a release in the next half year. 2 years later it was finally released in a rather bare bone state with quite a lot missing from the original promise and things being extremely unbalanced. It felt like getting an early beta copy rather than a final product. And when people started complaining to them they completely shut down communication. After that they started to make a LOT simpler games, which were quite good with Lethal League. Them making a proper fighting game will end up as a slow to release, stylish looking but awful to play and unbalanced mess. They have seemed to learn from the issues of Megabyte Punch not by solving the issues, but by actively avoiding making games that create these issues. But letting them make a sequel to this well push them in a game design style they're extremely poor in. They aren't designers, they'd programmers and artists. At least last time I've seen them.

Fun fact: Mia and Oleg (and maybe Ramos) are guest characters from Vs. I guess Polygon Magic liked those character enough to keep them around. Vs. is also a pseudo-reskin/pseudo-successor to Fighters' Impact, which has a more experimental take on fighting styles. Shaolin / Lord of Fist has an amazing story mode that chronologizes your characters life as you get older, stronger, and learn new techniques. It also has 8-player multitap versus mode, which is the only PS1 game I can think of that does that. Regardless, all Polygon Magic games consistently have banger OSTs.

1:20 Actually, I think that the cell shaded models are made to replicate those found in Dance Dance Revolution, especially the ones used in Dance Dance Revolution 5th Mix. While the designs themselves take heavy (and i mean, instantly noticeable) inspiration from the works of GOLI MATSUMOTO, an artist and main character designer behind Beatmania IIDX (to this day)
@ZigealFaust

This. It def feels more like the DDR chars but superficial people will just always spit out "LOOKS LIKE JET SET RADIO" when talking about cel shaded games and never look deeper into the style. Dude probs would call Cel Damage a homage to Jet Set Radio, lmfao.

Back then, Japan was very lenient with "homages and parody" to the point that Jotaro was in a fighting game without even asking Araki and was only renamed when said game came to the US. Also MUTLIPLE changes were done to Mother 2 before we got Earthbound.

To me this game is awesome. i first played this i think back in 2019 in eh holidays or somewhere in 2020. Tihis game was fun o play because i LOVE the rhythm supers, i love the characters, i love the music, i love the techno, DJ, Club, and Hip Hop culture they (kinda for Hip Hop) got going for this game. The fact that a lot of this game is in English, and the fact that this game is the way it is it almost makes you wonder how did they not release this in the west. Then again we got their past history to answer for that sadly. A sequel would be too much to ask for, but if theres one thing any current holders of this IP should do, they should at least rerelease this game. Maybe add online for the online players with (good) rollback. That may be too much to ask for as well lol.
