I once had a Reddit argument in a film subreddit where I was defending Steven Spielberg as a good director, and an admittedly more knowledgeable person disagreed with me. He justified his position by asking me if I had seen The Leopard, a 1963 Italian film, saying that that was a “real” film. I replied that I hadn’t, and he told me to go “watch more real cinema”. I have since seen The Leopard and a variety of other classic foreign films after over 5 years since that comment. My opinion has not changed and that person was a pretentious snob. I find music the absolute hardest thing to discuss beyond a surface level. The experience of listening to it is so personal and informed by so many things that even all the theory knowledge in the world isn't convincing anyone of anything. And the rules are so nebulous and wishy-washy to begin with so alot of the time that any "rules" hardly ever matter.

As the old saying goes, writing about music is like singing about architecture. It's a fruitless, impossible goal. However, since a lot of us do it anyway, I point to another, more positive quote from Stephen Sontheim: "Music is the richest of the art forms because it's the most abstract." If we MUST argue about music, we have to accept that all conclusions are basically meaningless to everyone but ourselves.
@bobbirdsong68252 жыл бұрын
i would disagree. it's very easy to discuss - if you play/write music. what really bugs me is when self-proclaimed "music enthusiasts" get off in putting down other's opinions or calling fans of certain styles "brain dead" when they themselves don't write songs or play professionally. not counting all of the people who are amateur musicians. I consider that significantly different from making a product out of your art, especially if it is a genuine emotional expression.

Music is, essentially, about sound good, and what sounds good to you might not sound good to other people. A band can have the best intentions, the best lore, be considered ground breaking for their time and you might not like their sound. A band might be considered bad, lacking substance, tacky - and yet you might like their sound and find meaning in their lyrics. I think the only true wrong music opinion is "X artist is objectively bad", because art cannot be objectively bad.

Theres argument for objectively bad art, low effort and low quality just made to launder money, the banana duck taped to a wall kind of "art"
@wertsir60602 жыл бұрын
@@samshow8462 Counterpoint, art that is low effort and low quality can be manufactured intentionally for the purpose of providing commentary on the state of the greater artistic community, or simply to help it stand out from it, and still be good art. Take for example, Folk Punk, a musical genre founded on a form of intentional Stylistic Suck as a reaction to the perceived overproduction and sort of sell-out nature of traditional Punk Music. Which often uses low quality audio and intentionally imperfect instrumental and vocal work to set itself apart and make an artistic statement. Is all folk punk objectively bad just because being low quality is a part of the aesthetic? I don’t think so, but you might, and thereby it is subjective. Or in another direction, Is Tommy Wisaus the Room objectively bad art? It contains a lot of terrible acting, a story that makes no sense, and some truly baffling filmmaking choices, by many metrics it is a terrible film. Yet simultaneously, it is greatly enjoyed by a great many people. Enjoyed ironically as a comedy, to be sure, but enjoyed nonetheless. So I think what you’ll find is that even if something is low effort and low quality, it can be considered good dependent on the mindset of the viewer and how many levels of irony they are on. And if the quality of a piece is dependent on the mindset of its viewer, then it’s quality is subjective.

One common problems, that makes the "music is subjective" statement ring more true is this situation: take a genre like harsh noise. You can have two people that say "this is a harsh, unpleasant wall of sound and it sounds like nails on a chalkboard." One person is stating that as a criticism, the other as a positive point of praise. This is why you can't have an objective marker for music, because a lot of it is too sensitive to cultural context and individual taste. The best you can really do as a critic is compare music to the broader contemporary music scene and describe how well it either adheres to those standards, pushes them forward, or subverts them to various degrees (on top of the technical aspects). This doesn't really make music "good" though.

Well I think online text discussions are bad if not in a traditional forum, there are sometimes messages we can take away. When a show tackles the many identities that have large chances to fail (Hollywoo industry, journalist, infertility, addiction) these stories statistically have a heart breaking end so those who watch have a similar outcome to the characters. Bojack will relapse, Diana has to struggle with cutting off those who enable her bad habits, etc. At least that’s my interpretation. It's definitely weird arguing about music (even though I do like to). The problem is that you can really appreciate the mechanisms in music that create a certain effect, but not everyone is going to agree that the end results are valuable or enjoyable. For example, I had a conversation about Eternal Champ II by Sweet Valley with a friend. It's a great album and I love how it drastically sways and loops through disparate genres, but my friend hated how disconnected the songs are and said it made them feel incohesive. We both agreed about what was happening mechanically, but our reception was totally different. At the end of the day the discussion can be fun but you have to accept and respect other people's opinions, because the alternative is disrespect which really only serves to feed negativity and your ego. But music is all about community and relating to shared experiences, so you should always be trying to build bridges and connect with people through it.

What bothers me is the people who come down the hardest on musicians they don’t enjoy most of the time don’t have the balls to make their own songs and release them. If your life’s work is just tearing apart those who’ve attempted to make something that contributes something to the world whilst you contribute nothing, I can’t respect you. And most of the time it’s glaringly obvious they’re just trying to compensate for insecurities. But at the end of the day music lives on forever in the hearts and minds of those who appreciate it, regardless of how harshly some judge it, and of the quantity of critics who do. Look at Pinkerton

I always find it funny that people put higher value on certain musical artists and styles and treat it like a fact that those are "objectively" the better music. Despite the fact that this all comes from personal opinions and societal standards throughout musical history which itself is formed entirely off personal opinions
@jesseRya2 жыл бұрын
The only subjective aspect of music is whether or not it's sounds good. But judging a piece of music based on whether or not it's pleasing to the ear is also a flawed way to measure its worth. I wouldn't exactly consider system of the Down "pleasing to the ear" but the sound evokes a specific emotion or provokes a specific thought. Like the painting The Scream. It isn't necessarily pleasing to the eyes but the message is what matters. Like a letter from the artist to the viewer. I guess what I'm saying is the only subjective aspect of art is the respective sense used to observe it. In terms of technicality, execution these things can be analyzed by professionals. But no one can say for sure what the "correct" way of judging a piece of work is.

Agree with this. This made me think of how the word "Fun" is treated as the most important thing in video games but one of my favorite games Silent Hill 2 isn't trying to be "Fun" exactly

I love dissonant and ugly sounding music a lot because it's able to stir more visceral emotions than music that is more melodic. I love both though.

my philosophy is that taste is entirely subjective but quality isn't which explains why we get "better" and "worse" bands when for example you ask a some random town about the beatles and their local the killers ripoff, while someone may have such taste that they like the local band more, i think general appeal is a valueable tool to measure "goodness" of an artist/a band and people that go against the masses and say "there is no way of telling one band is better than the other because it's different to everyone" are not exactly right

Fantano would get less hate if his opinions weren't presented as authoritative. Also I was surprised you didn't bring up that Greta Van Fleet, as well as Zerwee are more than just bringing back a style. They're both straight up impressions of specific bands. Not that I think that makes an artist any less valid, I was just looking foward to that being part of the discussion as soon as GVF was brought up.

Can't wait to release my 5 second loop of nails on a chalkboard for 10 hours album. I'm sure it'll get the same reception as any other album, because no objectively bad music exists, it's all just taste.

I don't think criticism is bad. But I do hate when people make blanket statements without offering any actual criticism, when they could just say that it's not music that they are into. I.e. [insert genre here] is not music or this isn't nearly as good as [insert artist here] You ask why and the response is, "it's just not."
