Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman were the best. Glad I got to see one of their final performances in LA. I have the original cast recording on CDs and listen to it often.

Crawford just wasn't believable to me...he sounded gay and just couldn't see anything between the two of them. Butler is much more handsome and manly.

I agree Michael Crawford had more pain and grit in his voice.

Agreed. I saw Sarah in concert with seats right next to the stage and her performance was breathtaking. In one part she is on the end of a long piece of stage that rises and extends over the audience which was just next level.

You can not possibly react to this song without following up with the truly enchanting rendition Emmy Rossum gave of "Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again"! Ever since I first heard and watched that, I have wanted to sing it in a gothic cathedral, where the audience is kept practically in darkness as my voice moves from the gallery above and behind them to the main entrance and then advances to the front as the volume rises gently along with the level of light. By the end of the song, that last note reverberates in the stones while all the lights gather to one point behind the singer, thereby solidifying the utter solitude.

Emmy Rossum is a classical trained singer and was only 16 years old when she auditioned for this role.

Butler's not bad, but the OG Phantom (Michael Crawford -- also, "OG" ... haha, see what I did there, Phantom fans?) and Ramin Karimloo are _panty dropping_ singers, and that's what the Phantom needs to be. 😆

Hi Maggie, you need to watch Anthony Warlow, from Australia. Fantastic operatic sing in the country in my opinion. Not sure if he did Phantom, however it is highly positive. He’s also done a duet with our legendary singer John Farnham, in a concert tour called the Main Event. John is a pop rock star and he’s known as THE VOICE (not the show, but he himself) and John and Anthony sing Granada! They are great mates…I believe you would love their singing and their humour…❤ Please, if you see this Maggie, react on this. I would love your take on it. Interestingly, Anthony Warlow, did a whole Album about Jeckle and Hyde. In the finale, he actually sings both parts of Jelleff AND Hyde. He sung it in studio, and he commented in an interview, that he did both parts together….its Amazing. He said it was the hardest thing he’d ever sung… brilliant and very evocative! It may not have been televised though…..

Opera is also very much about acting. You must not merely sing the song but portray the emotions,, the motivations, the PERSON of the role with voice and movement. I enjoy most musical theater but must admit that I do not really have the qualifications to do any serious criticism. I did like this video. Good reaction, good analysis, Maggie!

Before I thought to comment breathlessly having just DISCOVERED recently the full stage production on KZbin, it's likely you HAVE seen the Universal Studios backed 25th Anniversary stage performance of PotO @ The Royal Albert Hall replete with full closeups of the stellar stage cast's performances, character moments and closeups, and vocal renditions and the cinematic angles of the full story that I Only NOW appreciate! 🎭 🎹 🕯but if you haven't, I highly recommend it! Same as I finally understood the story and character motivations in Pride and Prejudice from the BBC minseries with the excellent Ehle/Firth despite the splendid cast in the single film version limited by its format! You must do all that the phantom asks of you. For a fuller picture and greater context!

Yes, both Butler & Rossum sounded like actors singing in a movie, but I did enjoy their performances (save that one cheesy note. He just doesn't have the range - full voice or falsetto for that note). I'd say good job overall.

Gerard Butler is a baritone if im not mistaken.. Is it normal to have a singer with a midrange singing voice sing songs with high tenor notes in them? It seems to me like everyone thinks baritones should sing the roof off the house when some of us (baritones) are more comfortable singing in our mix? Im a baritone and i find it easier to sing in my lower register. Just curious 🤔
@mark-nm4tc9 күн бұрын
It would be interesting as a singer for you to compare this with Pink Floyd's Echoes from the Meddle album. Roger Waters opted out of suing ALW for plagiarism. BTW, Michael Crawford was in the original cast and he's more famous here in the UK as the accident-prone Frank Spencer in the 70's sitcom, Some Mothers Do 'Ave Them in which he did his own (quite dangerous) stunts.

The Phantom seems horribly disfigured over roughly 1/16 of his entire face. (understated for effect) I'm not familiar with this version. Is he meant to be burned at all or are his scars more psychological?

Maggie, this version rates near the bottom of all the male singers to perform it. Number one pick, Michael Crawford. IMHO

Gerard Butler took me out of this film. He was a terrible choice for the Phantom. He was really struggling with the singing, and it showed. I was too poor at the time to see this show on stage during its heyday and so I WANTED this movie to happen. I bought the DVD when it came out... but then I heard Butler sing. I haven't been able to watch it since that first initial viewing. I was SO disappointed.
