What I love about Ramin's phantom is that at many times he doesn't actually touch Christine but is inches away from touching her. It somehow brings out more intensity and also at the same time you get the feels that he treats her like a treasure that's too precious that it might break

You don’t realize it until you watch closely but this blocking is super complex. He barely touches her and she has to move accordingly without making it look choppy or mechanical. Her face has to convey exactly what he’s trying to tell her without losing focus which can be difficult when also trying to look dreamy and hypnotized. And then when he sings the big end of each line (ex. Let your spirit/soul...) her eyes are closed when he directs her movement, but she still moves exactly how he directs even though she can’t see what he’s doing.
@randomaccount31193 жыл бұрын
Exactly. And there’s a lot of trust involved too. Because her eyes are closed, she obviously can’t see what he’s doing or directing her to move. So he could easily “mess up” by moving his hands in a different direction then he is supposed to and make Sierra look like an idiot. This is one of those scenes where you have to go through hell to make it look easy

@brainybunny133 жыл бұрын
@@van9825 i agree with you. I think that Gerard Butler has put more emotion and passion into this scene. I also like that in the movie the Phantom has taken Christine's hand and directed her to touch his cheek which put more emphasis on his longing for her. I also liked that the movie didn't make it seem like Christine was eager to take off his mask like she does in the musical. The movie took its time for Christine's curiosity to get the best of her. In here it seems like she is mostly focused on taking off the mask and not focused as much on his beautiful voice. I am not trying to hate on the musical or anything but in my humble opinion I do prefer this scene from the movie as it really lets Christine endulge in his voice and passion.

I don’t like it. Why is it such a hushed rushed whisper? Seems more like an intrusive thought he said aloud suggestively and he’s checking real quick to see if he got away with it. Then continues before he then changes his mind and regains his focus. It’s better when it’s all a part of the lullaby-like immersion they’ve both fallen into, and which he then floats back out of the immersion to lead her to the mirror. People talk about all the emotion that Ramin shows, but for me it’s just a dude constantly choking out his words instead of being a haunting “Angel of Music” who’s fully in his element.

Honestly, Ramin is the perfect Phantom, here are my reasons 1. He clearly puts vulnerability first. Nothing irritates me more than when a Phantom actor decides it's a bigger priority to be dark and mysterious opposed to being vulnerable- Ramin totally knew what he was doing there! 2. He has a clearness and purity to his voice that I feel the phantom would have. This goes for Sierra Boggess too. Both of these actors have a strong purity and slight hauntingness to their voice that makes them perfect for the roles. They dont have rich, deep voices like Carlotta's, but more pure and clear. To me, that's what I think a real angel would sound like.

Something I only just noticed (having watched this and other versions well over a dozen times) is that this Phantom never approaches her from the front; whenever she's looking at him he either stays still or moves backwards, but tends to take quick, circling steps towards her as soon as she's not looking at him. It's a lovely little detail that fits perfectly with the Phantom both being a frightened Quasimodo who's not comfortable being looked at, but also a dangerous predator who stalks his prey from behind. It makes me think of what people always say about wild animals "they're more scared of you than you are of them", yeah, fine, but a nervous tiger is still a tiger!

oh my god. all of the different emotions that Ramin portrays in a character that could easily be played as one-note. starting at 4:40 - he goes from enraptured in her, to a moment of building confidence and suaveness before he touches her arm, to his look of "oh shit" as she passes out, to a kind of joyful disbelief when he realizes he's holding Christine in his arms, to complete tenderness, and all of that is conveyed to us through his acting alone in just ten seconds. my other favorite moment - starting at 4:06, with pretty much just his face, he goes from serene, to losing his facade of confidence and growing fearful when she touches his mask and he grabs her wrist, to his panicked look of "oh god what do I do now" as he looks back and forth between Christine and her hand, to deciding to just run with it and gently taking her hand again (almost with a look of "yes this is what I meant to do right now, all according to plan, I definitely didn't just flip out for a second"), to looking confident and in control and knowledgable again, though maybe a bit more cautious. it just is such an incredible moment because it really makes the scene where she removes his mask later more impactful. even in this moment, he really didn't want to risk her seeing what he looked like because it would ruin the way she perceives him and you can see all of that just through his facial expressions. I feel like I always envision the phantom in this song as being infallible and completely confident in what he's doing, but Ramin's take on him is so much more nuanced and complex than that and I love it so so much. his phantom is very much unsure and nervous about this encounter but he's trying to hide it, and almost totally succeeding at doing that. this is one of the most believable acting moments in musical theater I've ever, ever seen. this feels so real.

I totally agree with your comment at the end when talking about him being confident and infallible in most performances starting with Michael Crawford. Not sure if you’ve seen him perform but at the part when the phantom Is holding Christine “savor each sensation” part Sarah Brightman actually caresses and touches his mask. I’ve never felt that to be something that would actually happen in that moment, it may look super romantic but I feel like no matter how wrapped up in the moment the phantom would be he would terrified of her touchIng his mask and possibly removing it to see his true face. I feel ramins actions in that moment of utter panic to be very realistic!

The extra details these two add pushes their performances to another level. Like here when Sierra is about to remove Ramin's mask. He quickly looks up in horror when he notices, and after he grabs her wrist, he quickly lets go and looks shocked that he actually touched her. And the way Sierra seems to flow between trance and reality as the Phantom leads her is perfection. Everyone has their favorite Phantom and Christine, but it's obvious why these two are so popular.

I have seen A LOT of Phantom/Christines over the years, and aside from Ramin and Sierra's truly stellar voices, what makes these two the definitive pairing has always been the chemistry and acting skills. You get the feeling that they are singing to each other and the audience is a voyeur to something special. in other pairings, I feel like the actors are mainly singing to the audience and using each other as a prop to convey the story, but it's so much more impactful to just dial it back and work the connection with each other. As an audience member, don't sing for 'us', sing for each other and let us vicariously experience it. Make us believe it. That's when the magic happens. Ramin and Sierra are the gold standard for this.

That’s right, he’s autistic. Since he was feeling pretty anxious in this scene this is how he self regulates and the fact that Christine joined him (hypnotized or not) makes it rlly special. When I first watched the musical, this was the only song that was stuck in my head. I could not stop replaying the part that went "silently the senses abandon their defenses" (0:24). He was so gentle with his voice. I absolutely love how he had her in a trance because of his magical voice and how his fears and insecurities were shown whenever Christine tries to touch his face. I cooed at the part where he stared at his hands in disbelief when he was carrying Christine. It's almost as if he truly believes he is undeserving of Christine, and that she is this pure, innocent being that he is not allowed or does not deserve to have. Recently read a post where someone said they like to compare this scene to the Final Lair just to look at how different Erik was (hopeful in MOTN but sad in Final Lair) and it's such an interesting difference. He truly adored Christine. Also giggled at how suggestive the lyrics (and their facial expressions!) were

@team Christine Ramin blends both perfectly. Sometimes he's operatic and sometimes he's pop/rock. The musical was written in 1986, so it is already a little bit influenced by rock. I personally love how Ramin sounds, it gives me chills. He's very emotional, and that really ties it together.
@EvieCorwell4 жыл бұрын
@team Christine Lloyd Webber _wanted_ someone with a more pop/rock voice for the Phantom. It's meant to be a blend. He actually said, and I wish I was making this up, that Gerard Butler's rougher voice was closer to what he'd imagined for the character. Anyway, a voice that can blend both elements works better for the songs in the musical.

First saw Phantom in a touring production in Orlando, FL - very impressive. Next in Cleveland, OH - a great show. THEN saw POTO 25th here a few months back - awesome, sensual, blew my mind, ears, and, well, other things (and I'm no teenager). Fell madly in love with Ramin's Phantom -- he owns the ground he walks on with a voice I can't get out of my mind. A dangerous and at the same time tender and very seductive Phantom. The connection between Sierra's Christine and Ramin's Phantom is waayyy beyond special.
