The Devil Worm in Back4Blood is a mutagenic parasite that enters the body of the host and immediately induces changes. These changes at first amount to the host completely losing control of their body. But as the infection takes deeper hold, eventually this will lead to special variants whos sole purpose is to break human defenses and infected whats left of humanity. In todays episode, we will talk about the Devil Worms Origins, what has become of humanity, what are the nests and ultimately, what happens to the human meatsuit as a result!

A similar IRL example of an infection hiding in the brain to avoid detection would be the condition PANS or PANDAS. My son developed PANDAS following a bad case of strep throat and it was absolutely terrifying to watch what it did to my son. In just a few days he developed ticks in his face, he was searching out ways to self harm, he would be smiling while trying to eat things to hurt his stomach. I had to hide anything sharp. He had panic attacks and crying fights. He was only 7 years old at the time. Thankfully once we were able to eradicate the strep that had colonized in his throat he returned to normal after about a year. We were so lucky cause I've met other kiddos who struggled with it for years until they eventually grew out of it. PANS is still a new hypothesis and I dont believe its even recognized as a full on condition yet but more and more of the medical field is accepting the idea of it. Its absolutely undeniable once you've seen it happen to your kiddo. Their personality changes almost over night.

I appreciate the kind words! Its crazy to think how "intelligent" bacteria and parasites can be. In the case of PANDAS reoccurring strep infections can eventually lead strep to disguising itself as parts of the brain to avoid detection and our immune systems. Once the immune system catches on it'll develop antibodies to attack the strep but can also unintentionally cause inflammation to healthy parts of the brain. PANS is essentially the same thing but is brought on by different issues like Lyme disease. I believe PANDAS is being phased out and is known by PANS as well now, but they were different things when he was diagnosed. From Columbia University in 2015: "Researchers have discovered how immune cells triggered by recurrent Strep A infections enter the brain, causing inflammation that may lead to autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorders in children. The study, performed in mice, found that immune cells reach the brain by traveling along odor-sensing neurons that emerge from the nasal cavity, not by breaching the blood-brain barrier directly. The findings could lead to improved methods for diagnosing, monitoring, and treating these disorders."

Deimos shows it can assimilate and reform entire ecosystems. Helminth is a variant strain bred to _partially_ convert humans, for use as biodrones. I don't think the term is used anywhere in-game these days, but it was pretty implicit that infested tissue is made up of (or quite like) technocytes from Dark Sector (more as a nod and recycling than direct continuity)

I see Toxoplasma being brought up a lot when discussing the game but I think the inspiration for the Devil Worms came from elsewhere. The worms have been referred to by the devs and in game as nematodes, now knowing they might be aliens means that's unlikely, however their anatomy is similar if not almost identical to a nematode and as Roanoke mentioned they seem like having an exoskeleton, he is partially correct there. Nematodes shed their outer "skin" much like arthropods which actually puts them in a group together with them and all moulting animals. Now going back to the parasitic nature of these worms, there's a whole phylum of worms similar to nematodes who are all parasites, they're called Nematomorpha and you might have heard of their parasitic strategy of getting inside a host (usually insect) and making it drown by jumping into any body of water thus releasing the worms who are now adults and free living. The worms need a host in which to grow but then need an aquatic environment to continue their parasitism-free lives. Seeing how the devs compare the Devil Worms to nematodes, their similar way of controlling a host into a state of mindless disregard for safety and I believe the desire to make a huge mass of flesh in a way reflecting a body of water for the last stage are all signs that Nematomorphs were the main inspiration for these parasitic alien worms.

This sounds like the hive in destiny 2. They’re infested with worms that get stronger the more they kill other individuals. Something called sword logic I think. But the premise of worms, changes to the biology of the species, and other factors made me draw a comparison
@thecrimsoncommando3875
@thecrimsoncommando3875 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it's a symbiotic relationship: the Hive ingest the worm after gestation to procure longevity and as a source of power as they age. The worm inside grows stronger with each kill by its host and grants said host a portion of this strength. Unfortunately for the Hive, the worm's appetite grows with its strength, ultimately to the point where the worm consumes its host inside out - Savathun, the Hive Witch Queen, describes her worm physically gnawing at her innards. The whole thing is much more in depth and broader than what I've written here, but it's a start.
@nitwriter4804

Yeah, it's indeed called ''The Sword Logic'' and closely resembles the philosophy of the Darkness, it follows the logic of ''Which cannot protect itself, should rightfully be destroyed by that wich is more powerfull''. So a few things I noticed. Firstly the worm as seen when the doctor shoots the man seems to be of full size. That must mean that either two things, a full sized worm infected the man or an egg must’ve grown to an abnormal size in a short time. The first seems more likely, maybe implying that the worms physically travel into the body instead of eggs being deposited. The structure of the worm also is very different from most normal worms, per se, a tapeworm. A tapeworm has a segmented body with a asexual reproduction inside the proglottids. It has a full digestive system reminiscent of a earthworm. Just my notes.

So after finishing up my abomination fight I started to think about its overall appearance, and how...incomplete it looked, I'm wondering in the abomination seen in the story isn't unfinished but was forced into use due to the offensive launched by Fort hope. The lack of hind legs points to this possibly being the case however I also wanna point out that it's tail didn't look like it was meant to be a set of legs rather it looks like the tail of a whale albeit incomplete. The abomination has a very imposing size to be sure but really only looked around 2 ogres tall if it stood up. The devil worms are clearly intelligent enough to specifically make new ridden to break human defenses this abomination may be one of many or could have been intended to be much larger even gaining biomass as it goes being the ideal endgame of the worm. The level the other ridden go to in order to protect the abomination also doesn't seem normal they only arrive like that when you attack a nest yet here they are protecting another ridden. That being said that's an amazing final boss and I'm stoked for what's next.

ok, hear me out. as roanoke said, the worm most likely cant survive in salt water, and the abomination seems built to swim, as you said by the incomplete whale tail. on top of that, the top of its head has a similar shape to that of other marine animals like for example, sharks. combined with the fact that the abomination seems very important to the worm, and that its skin is the thoughtest of all ridden, this gives me an idea. what if, the abomination was made to travel across the ocean, and infect other parts of the world? this would explain its massive size and why it has no legs, but a tail made for swimming, in fact, whos to say the worms didnt catch beached animals and use them to make the abomination

I suppose the devil worms could have a symbiotic relationship in it’s native environment where a host that isn’t killed by the worms gains something like a healing factor by the worm’s ability to reshape biomass mimicking a more intense version of our platelets

Minus a multinational corporation dumb enough to weaponize something that could end the world. Old Umbrella corp would have been frothing at the mouth to find a devil worm- it singlehandedly achieves most of the things all of their various projects barely managed to do, but combined.

A cool thing I learned about that whole parasites calming your immune system thing is that apparently there's a parasitic worm that, if it infects your lungs, can completely suppress asthma/asthma attacks.

Ya know, this is probably one of those things that makes Yeerks and the Goa'uld seem preferable... Meanwhile The Beast (CUT US LOOSE!), this, The Flood ([Insert Gravemind Quote here]), those parasites from The Bay, The Thing, several SCPs, and The Stuff are all things I would very much prefer to not deal with if forced to choose to live in a world with such things existing... Oh, and the Zerg too, but ending up like Alexi Stukov or Kerrigan isn't the worst fate one can have. Considering the Zerg aren't very consistent with Infested at times it's probably a coin flip on what one would end up as.

It depends on whether the virus has reached island states far away of America or whether it has come outside of the American continent. Since the effects of the parasite can be seen relatively quickly, I could imagine that some island states or continents (Australia) have survived. (depends of course on many things)
