The VIRAL LYCANTHROPY in Werewolves Within Explained

In the small town of Beaversfield, a new park ranger would arrive to oversee the process of a pipeline being installed. Some of the residence in the are were happy to have this new found income from the pipeline while others would see it as destroying the natural environment. But as they squabbled over who was right and who was wrong, eventually people would start to go missing and new people would be turning up. As the town becomes more paranoid it is revealed that the infection is a bit more strange than the standard version we all know and Love. But why is this? Lets discuss that in todays episode!

I think the film's writers wrote Cecily to be a genetically cursed werewolf. She is the 7th child of the 7th child (mentioned on her walk with Finn and later by Joaquim). In some Latin American countries the 7th son of a 7th son has to be baptized in 7 different churches or else they become a werewolf (lobizón or lobisomem) upon adulthood. It was never mentioned that her punk band were her first victims, just that she ate them. I took that line as she joined and got them alone to attack them, like she played the town, or had an accident like the other campsite. The businessman Sam Parker was made out to be a wannabe Van Helsing who probably had special werewolf weapons made since he was tracking the attacks and had a rig with all those weapons in it. He even has a line early on "“A man that doesn’t want to conquer nature doesn’t understand how brutal it is,” The crossbow and bolt Jeanine used at the end looked to be the same as the one in Sam's truck.

The explanation of how lycanthropy came to be in myth is interesting, but I feel like a part of it could also be “What is the spookiest/coolest thing ever? A person that can transform into an animal.” The ability to roam as an unassuming beast, the ability to wield animal finesse while having human intelligence, but also the fear of losing yourself to savagery as an animal, the suspicion of someone who holds that ability as one of cunning-That person dramatically transforms physically and perhaps mentally based on situation, and it throws a layer of doubt and ambiguity onto the person as to whether they can be trusted, because it’s already difficult trusting a human that can’t shapeshift. Also body horror.

Something that has me thinking of late about werewolves and shapeshifters in general: are their bones like potent clay or something? Like, not actual clay, but I mean, ok. Hear me out. Shifters change their shape, which affects their bonestructure, lots of popping, breaking and readjusting going on there. But that shouldn't work, cause there would be an issue in the bones fusing in their new state. So that got the thought going, what if shapeshifters bones change their state somewhat. From a solid to more loose, not quite liquid, like clay,to ease the transition into the new form? In a lot of Werewolf media, it's often said or suggested that the WWs have a higher body temperature, so what if, and I'm spit-balling here, whenever a transformation happens, back and forth like, chemicals in the body cause it to heat up to a point the bones temporarily switch their state for easier breakage, rearrangement and finally, once the new form is achieved, take the more solid state, becoming far more durable, as they have re-healed and the creature can take more punishment? Just spitballing here.

That perception test is a good one. I had a spinal cord injury because I broke my neck, and I was wheelchair bound. I had really bad nerve damage. Once I started to stand and walk again, I would have to do it with my eyes closed, and it felt like I could feel the earth spinning beneath my feet. I would fall down. Even now, even though I can play sports and things, I could be standing still and tilt over and stumble. It's weird.
