In The Name Of Justice.. I do like your summation of this story and we must remember this is a story by Bligh.... for Bligh. Somewhat self serving and yes Bligh had a knack in convincing people to listen/agree with him. Captain James Cook obviously had confidence in Bligh as a master navigator but Cook saw in Bligh a personality that was very much into himself and had very little people skills hence the reason Bligh was the only officer not to be promoted. Great to read your thoughts. I saw the movie years ago but only became interested when I met my partner who is a direct descendant of Fletcher Christian though she has never been to Pitcairn Island. I would love to go there myself. Myth & Fact by Prof. Edward Leahy at the University of Scranton is a great listen.

Bligh's report to the Admiralty painted a picture of himself that made him seem almost perfect in everything he did. However, in the process it revealed quite a lot about his character that was not so good. Having said that, he was a masterful sailor of incredible skill, gutsy and a superb organiser both of men and material. Qualities that were vital in the open boat voyage.
@captainjust4490
@captainjust4490 8 жыл бұрын
The Admiralty boys were not so keen on open boat voyages. On the contrary they were very interested in HM ships fulfilling the orders of the Admiralty. Bligh was clearly not the right man to the job. Nor was he actually fit to command a HM ship. The duties of the master are not exhaustive of being a good navigator. The master of a ship must be able to ensure a successful result of the entire marine adventure entrusted to him as a commanding officer. Bligh had no experience in that. He was not ready to accept the responsibilities of the master. I am not even sure he would have made a good first officer that time.

I am sure Bligh was doing his best. But his best was simply not enough to navigate the Bounty back to Britain.

Captain Just Any man that could make a voyage in an open boat of 4,164 miles with very small provisions and maintain the discipline and morale of the men with him during it should not be so easily dismissed. It was a truly remarkable feat. He was also considered a good enough sailor that Captain Cook invited him to join his expeditions at age 22 as sailing master (Master Navigator) on the Navy Sloop, Resolution. It is clear he was a highly respected technical sailor even then. Later, Nelson would give him command of a ship and then lavish praise on him for helping to secure victory in a sea battle. He was then, clearly a man of great substance and ability by the end of his career. Though often dogged by ill fortune. He became a captain in the merchant navy after leaving the RN but also served with distinction under several commanders in various battles during his time under orders. Eventually becoming a Vice Admiral in the navy. Clearly then, he was well respected by his contemporaries and his skills rewarded accordingly. He became Captain of the Bounty while still at the lowly rank of Lieutenant and because the ship he commanded was a Cutter, she had no other officers. Unable to round Cape Horn because of bad weather he was forced to take the very long way round on his voyage to Tahiti. That may have been where the discord among the crew first began to grow that bloomed into full scale rebellion after a further five month delay among the women of Tahiti. With no fellow officers or Marines to support him on board, he had to rely upon the force of his own personality to try and maintain discipline. He was in a weak position and many members of the crew would have known it. Once his friendship with Fletcher Christian finally broke down he was utterly alone. Ripe for the taking. It was in that 23 foot open boat however, that Bligh proved his worth as a Captain. Under the most astoundingly poor conditions, in an over loaded boat, sailing upon a vast ocean with no charts and just one week's food he managed, to not only sail the massive distance required but also to find Timor. The voyage was completed in 47 days and only one man was lost to hostile natives. A staggering achievement. It is my personal belief that the mutiny was caused by a relatively inexperienced small crew, sailing on a vessel with inadequate security and a non existent command structure led by a man who had all of the skills a Captain needed apart from those of man management. If anything, there is reason to think he should have been tougher than he was and because he was not, it was seen as weakness by the crew. His crew were angry and rebellious at a time when angry rebelliousness was growing ever more common in the navy and mutiny was almost common place. Most of the crew were unused to the rigours of the sea in those days, so they were not hardened sailors. When they reached Tahiti and fell into an utterly debauched lifestyle with women who welcomed visitors by sleeping with them and by men who welcomed them by getting them drunk and holding elaborate feasts, the thought of going back to the hardships of life about a small cutter sealed Bligh's fate. These circumstances combined to make what happened next inevitable. I am not as harsh a judge as you are of Bligh. Neither, I might add, was the navy who clearly held him in high esteem. He was acquitted at the subsequent inquiry. Having said all of this however, there remains with me a suspicion that Bligh was a clever man at appearing blameless when blame belonged to him and would manipulate others to that effect.

FROM THE ON-LINE FREE DICTIONARY: Usage Note: Victual is properly pronounced (vĭt′l), with two syllables and no (k) sound. It was borrowed in the 1300s from the Old French form vitaille, which had stress and a diphthong in the second syllable, but the word was Anglicized after that to put the stress up front in the manner of most native English words. The spelling with c (and a little later with u) has a long history too, in both French and English. This spelling is a learned one, showing off the knowledge that the word came from Late Latin victuālia, "provisions." The word is now usually spelled victual, or on occasion vittle, but the pronunciation has remained (vĭt′l).

I'm sure you two can even bring up the origins of 90% of the word's you exchange lol. I'm not picking on you I think it's extraordinary there's people who are capable of being that smart. I'm very well read with a fair vocabulary and would probably lose a middle school spelling ~B. Sorry though had to pick on you Lol. Awesome 👍

People who are listening would like to understand what is being said. Pronouncing the terms in seaman's dialect would render descrptions of the rigging almost impossible, and it hard enough for most people to master the geography of the rigging and sails of those complicated ships. Good for you if you know - most don't.

Mutiny 'on' the Bounty is a different book. Mutiny on the Bounty was written by Charles Nordhoff and James Hall. This was a very famous story so to avoid copyright issues, authors had to avoid the exact wording. Jules Verne also did a version called Mutineers of the Bounty or something like that,

This story is "Mutiny on the Bounty", and William Bligh was commanding it - not the author. As is often the case; what we see and read online should not be considered truthful or fact. Edited to add: Think of Wells' radio reading of "War of the Worlds" and how much of the public mistook that dramatic fantasy as reality. It's been happening since ever.

Poor take, Steve! First, you made a confidently wrong assumption about the title of the earlier book because you only knew of the later movies. Second, the author and Bligh are one and the same! This was his memoir, his version of the events of the mutiny and subsequent events. Third, you conflated Welles' definitely fictional work to this nonfiction, autobiographical one. The most you could say is Bligh cast himself in the most favorable light possible. It's not like he made up tropical aliens with coconut death-rays.
@stevelux9854
@stevelux9854 Жыл бұрын
@@zmancan5290 Mutiny on the Bounty (the book) was written by Charles Nordhoff and James Norman Hall, from Bligh's memoir and official documents. They also wrote Botany Bay and other books. Perhaps before you go around publically castigating someone in an effort to compensate for your own ignorance you could do just a little research to ensure you are right in your opinions. Secondly; my point stands that we cannot always believe what we hear or read, and with AI + CGI we will soon not be able to believe what we see. If you didn't like my analogy, well, that's on you.
@zmancan5290
@zmancan5290 Жыл бұрын
@@stevelux9854 So glad I forced you to look up the information you didn't know beforehand! And way to totally avoid my point that this audiobook is not of Nordhoff and Hall's work but Bligh's own memoir. So your error about conflating the titles then blithely blathering "Bligh was the commander - not the author" stands. Doubly weak, Steve-O. Yes, I agree generative AI will cause us great strife in determining fact from fiction in the near future. How an autobiographical work in print for over 200 years and whose video thumbnail is 100% accurate to both title and author still led you astray is amazing. Who needs AI to disinform when Steve does it himself from jump street?

Drink, Syphilis, Christianity and Cricket,@@cotswoldcuckoo775 No country should decide to OWN another or to EXPLOIT another people. It was the English working class who suffered as much as people in the colonies partly due to the idea of expansion and to the industrial revolution which began in Britain. However large parts of the Empire were released gracefully without problems and one legacy of the British Empire was the widespread use of English as a world language and the gradual spread in some countries of the idea of democracy. Your list could apply to other empires such as France, Spain, Portugal if you exclude cricket. You could have added football (soccer). Now the Empire has gone the upper classes in Britain are becoming dominant again and are aiming to get rid of Brexit to finish the job and once more ordinary people are at the bottom of the heap and will suffer.
