I bought an ML10 new from MESAS, thirty-something years ago. Still have it but it's up on the industrial estate gathering dust while I use the Chinese contraption in my garage. I am slowly accumulating moulding stuff, today I bought a sand scoop, 3 meters of 80x20mm beech and a bag of modesty blocks to make my first flask. Such fun, please keep making the movies.

Ive watched many of your videos and always wanted a better look at the lathe. Thanks! That spindle raiser is similar in design to a 1945 Logan 11" I used to own. It had an accessory spindle that changed the lathe from 11x36 to 16x24. It had blocks for both the toolpost and tailstock and ran a 4:1 reduction from the spindle. The gear drive was a spindle mounted small gear driving an internal tooth large gear on the accessory head and you ran the lathe in the normal direction. Cheers Colin

You loosen the screw and slide it towards the outside of the gear it's mounted on , then tighten it again. This disconnects the gear from the spindle. Then loosen the big nut holding the backgears and slide it forforwards to mesh with the spindle gears. The drive now goes vis the backgear. Email me if you need any help.

Hi Myford, I love your channel and after watching and learning about machine shop on KZbin for a while now, I think I'm confident to finally get my hands on a lathe. I've only started watching your channel recently and have sort of fell in love with Myfords, and am considering them, naturally living in Britain. A Myford Super '7' has popped up on gumtree for £1050 (without quick change gearbox and not sure of it has power cross-feed). The guy is saying he accepts offers, but I don't know how that would go. Is it worth considering? I looked at new lathes on machine mart and for around a £1000 can get one of the Clarke ones. Are they comparable? Now this would be my first ever machine tool besides a bench-top drill press and I don't have any lathe related bits (not even drills) lying around, so would have to start from complete scratch. I'm not into any of the common hobbies like model making or engine building, but would like a lathe to be able to turn diameters and general parts as I please (some cycling related stuff). Any advice? If you go on gumtree and just put lathe in the search box, and put Swansea as the location you should see 2 green Myfords.

Hi Myfordboy: Like your video's especially the Ml10 series. Like you I have an ML Speed 10. I bought it brand new thru a distributor in the U.S. The biggest difference from the ML7 vs ML10 series is the swing heights ( Approx. 1/4" ) If you compare the tooling part #'s ML& vs ML10 approx. 85% of the tooling matches both lathes. With my budget $ it was a difference if I wanted the lathe & no tooling (ML7) or a little less lathe with a chance for upgrade to ML7 later with most of the tooling SO settled for ML10 to do model engineering. Granted it doesn't have quick change gear box BUT wanted the option of the change gears for BOTH inch & m/m threads as have both sets. I won't list all my tooling other then have at least as much as you to give you an idea. After seeing your video's made me appreciate how fortunate that I have such a great lathe & tooling. The Myford craftsmanship on the lathe/ tooling is great. I am presently retired from a Field Service job & have been to the U.K. various times( A.J. REEVES - BLACKGATES ENGINEERING) So now have MORE TIME TO FINALLY WORK ON THE SHOP @ MY HOME! To give you an idea of TIME LOST TO JOB DUTIES & OTHER TIME HOME CONSUMING. You know when Myford quit making the Ml10's WELL MINE MIGHT HAVE MAYBE 2-3 HOURS RUN TIME ON IT -- IF THAT -- NEVER HAD A CHANCE TO USE IT -- ITS LIKE "BRAND NEW" - RIGHT OUT OF THE BOX. Thanks for your time Mike G.

+Mark Sinden Hi Mark: Sorry about delay -- just checked back & saw your comment. While I really like the Super7 my ML10 is the "Speed 10" Version which has the higher speed setup with extra jack shaft so you can use carbide tooling on it. As mentioned I only have about maybe 2-3 hrs on the lathe if that so its like brand new out of the box. It also has the longer bed on it so it is 20" between ctr.'s. Now with Myford home plant closed it is really hard to locate their products here in U.S.. A lot of the used pieces are really USED!! Sometime's my dealer has some used ones but haven't really looked to much since mine is new.I know when you talk about Myford here not to many people know what your talking about. Hello again Myfordboy, Been watching your videos again and have noticed a couple of differences between your and my ML10. First difference is the spring you have connected to the motor mounting plate - the other end of the spring is hidden from view. Is this your modification please, and if so, why? Second difference is the size of the [rubber?) supports/rests for the casing that covers the belt from countershaft to headstock. Have you fitted these large supports/rests, and if so, what material are they please?
@myfordboy8 жыл бұрын
I have modified the drive to make a clutch for the spindle. The spring pulls the motor forward and there is a bracket with 2 rollers that deform the belt and disconnect the drive. Longer feet made of plastic were added to lift the cover a little to clear the pulleys when the drive is disconnected.

Hi. I'm subscribed to your channel for a few months now and I've watched lots of your videos. I think I've watched this one at least 10 times, as I'm looking for a ML10 myself and it includes lots of valuable info and details on this model. I'd like to make one question. Have you ever changed the bearings on this early model ML10? I've found plenty of info for changing the taper bearings on later models but none info for the early ones with plain bearings. Greetings from Athens, Greece.
@myfordboy8 жыл бұрын
+Nick Prionas You cannot change the bearings on this model. There are no replaceable bearings. The cast iron headstock is bored and the spindle runs directly in it. There are some shims that can be removed to tighten the bearing. If you read the description of this lathe at lathes.co.uk you will see it has never been know for the bearings to be adjusted on the ML10. My lathe is probably 40 years, gets a lot of use and there is absolutely no play in the bearings so don't be put off by this feature. I have replaced the thrust bearing in the past.

Please excuse my ignorance about lathes, should the gears have so much backlash / wear and it rattle like that? I watched. Looking to buy a Lathe & don’t know whether to buy new or used, UK or Chinese, etc so trying to learn as much as I can before jumping in the deep end with both feet.
@myfordboy6 жыл бұрын
The lathe is belt drive so there is no rattle from the drive from motor to spindle. The rattle comes from the changewheels. They could be adjusted to be quieter or disconnected when not in use. If the lathe had a gear drive then yes a rattle could indicate a problem.

Hi there , thanks for the good videos , i am looking into making my own leadscrew for my ml10 , its a metric 1 , do you have any info on the dimensions of the leadscrew as mine is very warn i want to get the best measurement. thanks in advance.
@myfordboy4 жыл бұрын
Mine is an imperial lathe so dimensions will be different. Try lathes.co.uk for info. I would not try and cut one but see if you can find an already threaded rod of the right thread form.

Hello there could you tell me where you got the spindle raiser from, and do you think it would it work on a myford ML7. thanks.

I made the spindle raise to my own design.

Hi Myfordboy, Have watched many of your videos on KZbin. How do you make changing your chuck so easy? I have a Myford Speed 10 and changing the chuck is a nightmare - taking it off is not too difficult, but when putting it on it is so so difficult to connect the thread correctly.........
@myfordboy8 жыл бұрын
I don't have this problem at all. My 3 and 4 jaw, faceplate and collet chuck all go on and off easily. I am sure you have checked the threads are clean. Maybe your spindle is a little oversize but I dout that would be the case.
@mauricenorthcott79888 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply. Yes I checked everything clean. I did succeed in fitting and undoing it a few times last evening. Perhaps I am getting "the knack". Thanks again.

That motor of yours, is it a 2 direction motor or have you wired it especially to run both directions?
@myfordboy10 жыл бұрын
It's a standard split phase motor.It can be run in either direction depending o the connections at the terminal block.

Hi.I have just bought an old Ml10 with plain headstock bearings.Do you find the 840 rpm top speed limiting ? I am stripping and refurbishing the lathe and started by looking for the serial Number, I can't find one at the tailstock end so maybe the bed has been replaced at some point.
@myfordboy9 жыл бұрын
+Ken Dart I find the speed is fine. I use it on top speed mostly and just reduce it a bit for larger stuff. I rarely use the backgear except for screwcutting. By serial number it just in front of the tailstock handle. if you haven't already been there be sure to visit lathes.co.uk for everything you need to know about this lathe.

the apron run a gear over the lead screw? these lathe do not have a hack gear right ?
@myfordboy5 жыл бұрын
There is no rack. The leadscrew acts as one. leadscrew handwheel is used for cuts.

Hi David, I would like copy your clutch arrangement which I think is excellent. Could you let me know what distance between the two rollers are? Thank you, Ian R.
@myfordboy6 жыл бұрын
Rollers are 0.50"dia. spaced 4.46" apart. They are fixed to the mounting arm 4" from one roller. Mounting arm centres 2". You need to fit a strong spring to pull the motor mounting bracket forwards. Adjust position of new brackets so belt is deformed when motor bracket forward.

G'day form Oz.... superb videos ! I have an ML10, had it since new... still going strong ! Very much like your homemade clutch... I can just about work it out from pausing the video... any chance of some basic dimensions of the key components... would be much appreciated. I also see that you have replaced the headstock oilers with larger ones... good idea, do the old ones just screw out ? Cheers... John
@myfordboy9 жыл бұрын
+John Raffe I'll sketch it out if you send me your email . The oilers were the ones fitted when i bought the lathe . It had one previuos owner but I think they are original.

How do you hold the mandrel from turning while unscrewing the chuck?
@myfordboy5 жыл бұрын
Engage low gear and it gives enough resistance to unscrew it.

@myfordboy10 жыл бұрын
myfordboy The speed 10 has a higher top speed and different bearing in the headstock. You can read about the history and specification of the ML10 and many other lathes at lathes.co.uk
