We used the squares, but the letters were in a different order and we didn’t use x and o’s, we used dots with the number of dots signifying what letter it was.

I joined club penguin in 2006 as a 6 year old. Even when I was a teenager I would periodically hop on to see how things were, collect some new items and badges. I remember when the red puffles were first introduced, I remember the old HQ and feeling annoyed when it got destroyed and they made a much fancier HQ (before that it felt kind of secretive and after it didn't feel as special lol). I remember being so excited when the dojo turned from a boring old room into somewhere with purpose and collecting card jitsu packs in real life! When they introduced the thin ice arcade game! And the recycling centre! Also there was once a promotional thing where with every box of innocent smoothies you could unlock an item in club penguin and I drank sooooo many smoothies and collected so many items :D Even the smaller things like seeing more books appear in the library and reading the jokes in the newspaper... I literally grew up on club penguin so I miss it sometimes. I know about the bootlegs but they aren't the same. They're like an old photo album where all my photos have been removed.

I can attest to the 'ghost membership' bit. I had that happen to me as well. My parents would occasionally buy me gift cards for 1 month gift cards and sometimes for Christmas I would get a 6 month card. I was never allowed to put in their credit card because back then in CP's prime adults didn't really believe in online shopping yet. One year my parents got me a 6 month membership gift card for Christmas and I remember I was extremely happy about it but boy oh boy I only got happier as time went on because when the 6th month came and went... My membership remained and I was ecstatic but I figured it wouldn't be for long... To sum it up I ended up having a membership for the next 3 years on top of the original 6 months I paid for. ~Mitch (A Club Penguin fanatic)

After a while I stopped playing because I got older and lost interest. One day when I herd that it was shutting down I tried to login to my account with no luck, so I emailed the staff. Somehow I got emailed back by the creator saying "We see your account here named "X" sadly we can't restore your account but we seen that you had membership for quite some time so what we can do is give you an account with pretty much everything you had and with the same name too! But because we're shutting down this will only last about 1-2 months at the most! We hope that this resolves your issues and thank you so much for coming back. Waddle on.. Dude. I remember over half of these things just from playing the game itself. Club Penguin stood as the obelisk of my childhood, I spent probably thousands of hours scouring the island for things to do. Ghost Memberships were definitely a thing, as I once found a fabled one year membership that ended up lasting for like three years before getting beamed. Pookies were something that just seemed like a virtual house roleplay as a kid, not too different from the kind of house games at the school playground, but in retrospect, they were a really dodgy aspect of the game. I joined an army once as well, Rebel Penguin Federation I believe, and it really made the game more fun to play. The hours spent scouring the island for clues to Shadow Ninjas, finding people who had that portal to the Box Dimension in their igloos, exploring with friends, and other countless features and quirks of Club Penguin and its community have defined my entire childhood. Videos like these really take me back to my childhood when this game was my entire world. Thanks for making this, dude. Amazing video.

Don't worry, I remember pookies vividly. It is weird that I haven't seen many other people talking about pookies though. I remember those "fashion contests" to see who'd have the best outfit in certain categories to be the one that gets "adopted" I remember this cause I actually did roleplay as a pookie back then. Bad memories. I also remember how there were "pookie eggs" where they'd dress up in a ghost costume and face away from the camera to be a "pookie egg" I also have no idea why pookies were all just yellow back then. Pookies were just all yellow because of some unwritten rule I guess. You would never be able to walk into the pet shop without seeing pookies everywhere begging to be adopted. So I have no idea how most people don't remember them. Edit just for a few extra things: I never remembered anything about the parents being called "Duh duhs" that surely wasn't the norm. Mainly what I did as a pookie is that my pookie would age up through an entire lifespan super quickly. I guess it's a good thing I don't ever remember what happened during those days. It's been so long that my memories are pretty much non existent about anything that happened. And now that I just turned 18 today, it's just really mind boggling having remembered all that stuff. That stuff was all back when I was like 8 or something.
@delinquent6241 Жыл бұрын
You had probably a better experience as a pookie that what it later devolved into. later on mostly it was just child abuse or you had to fill in a 20 question form where you were expected to give cute, responsive answers in a cute font, answers had to be paragraphs and it became hella toxic.

This is an amazing video. Club Penguin in the “CPPS era” is still going strong, with a community closer than ever! Now the main client we use for cp is NewCP, super easy to download and basically picks up right where disney left off. i didn’t think armies would come up in the video either, because they never do, but you really did your research! CPAC is rebranded to Club Penguin Army Times, and the community is still (somehow) living to this day. in OGCP armies used skype and xat to host events, but it was honestly more common for them to happen solely on club penguin. i actually just opened up my own army and i realize how much of a cult it can come off as. maybe we are, idk. and while a lot of people don’t want to admit it it’s definitely an interactive role play, not just some “rahhh battle” stuff but it really dives deep into politics, warfare, climbing up ranks and proving your worth in the sub community. thanks for making this video! i’ll promote it every way i can. I joined club penguin in 2007. This brought back so many memories. I remember logging on the last day and tipping the ice berg. It was so bittersweet.
@DragonitaPurple Жыл бұрын
I did get a phantom membership once, but not exactly in the way the video describes. One time my membership was about to expire, and on its last day i saw my penguin was returned to default without items, so without thinking twice i put back on all my defining member items. When the membership expired the next day, i was still wearing all of my clothes, but had blocked access to wear any other member item i had. I never took off any of my items since then, cause it meant i couldn't put them back on. I was already falling off CP at that time so it was the last membership i ever bought and didn't matter that much. Years later, i joined the last day of Club Penguin still wearing those clothes the staff forgot to take off me, for one last time.

That’s so strange, I wonder what in the games codebase let users sort of have leniency with parts of the game like this 😵💫😵💫😵💫

@@Porder i can only guess whatever part of the code that takes member items away activated too early, and after i put my items back on and the membership actually expired it didn't bother activating again

I remember the pookie thing really well... holy crap. I was 8 years old and started roleplaying because all my club penguin friends did. I was a guy but roleplayed as a girl penguin (my name was sk8trpenguin) as they were the main ones picked by the creepy parents. Suffice to say even at the time I realized progressively as things got creepier. Some "mother" penguin adopted my penguin, we actually had a pretty innocent and heartwarming RP for a while and it made me feel like I had a close friend at a time when I didn't have many super close people outside my sisters and parents. It was honestly a multiplayer Sims kinda thing. That was the appeal, I guess? Eventually "she" proceeded to make various comments about covering herself and my penguin completely in ice cream in the kitchen after a day at the cove and, well, after trying to cope, I got the fuck out. Looking back, shit was so extremely disturbing even my younger self knew exactly what was going on, my sister was pretty disgusted to hear the shit that can happen in Club Penguin when I told her. I played GTA as a kid, shooters, mature games all the time. But that shit with real creeps scared the fuck out of me and got me to quickly x out of the whole browser, causing me to stay offline for a few days. Fun memories as a kid minus that, yet also freaking scary ones when you look back as an adult with more knowledge and the ability to see things as they really are. Hopefully Club Penguin banned a lot of those accounts.

I remember being part of the “anti-pookie” crowd. I was only around 10 or 11, so the notion of it being associated with certain “undesirable” interests never really dawned on me, all I thought was that they were either weird or very little kids who I, for whatever reason, considered to be ruining Club Penguin. Obviously, nowadays I realize they were pretty much harmless. I somewhat remember rumors floating around that the staff were going to close down the pet shop to deter the pookies, which as we know, didn’t end up being true. Something myself and other people who hated pookies would do is abuse them. Basically, we would adopt them and roleplay to gain their trust, then turn vindictive and pretend to do things like starve them or lock them in rooms. From what I remember, I think the goal was to scare the pookies away. That was my experience, at least. Also, as for the ghost membership, I remember when I finally convinced my dad to buy me a month of membership, during what were supposed to be the final days, messages kept popping up warning me it was about to expire. I’m not sure if it just kept auto-charging my dad’s credit card, but my membership never actually ended. That makes me wonder though, if it had auto-charged it, then why did it keep warning me it was going to expire? I also never saw those messages again after that first month.

Hello, past mumu here, I viewed the pet shop and pookies as playing house but some of the duh duhs and even some pookies made it super creepy. It was such a dangerous part of the club penguin community tbh. It did make me super skilled at making igloos tho so bless that
@noodle100100 Жыл бұрын
Past Pookie, lmao. Same deal here, I was just a literal child playing house through a pixel penguin game. Some people would take things in a weird direction, but 9 year old me was smart enough to report them and leave their igloos. I had one guy who adopted me and then roleplayed physically abusing me? Like throwing me into fires and stuff, it was WILD lmaoo. Most of it were all kids playing a game, though. To my knowledge.
@fef65b Жыл бұрын
@@noodle100100 I "married" a duh duh once that then cheated on me with the "big wista" and they left ? Occasionally I would get pookies that would try and do breast feeding and that was super creepy. Some duh duhs would try and fuck while the pookies were "asleep" and that's ??? man -

@noodle100100 Жыл бұрын
@twinkledinkle That's so funny lmaoo. I think it was entirely kids just finding a way to play house in a digital setting. I had plenty of fun, at least, so I doubt any real harm came out of it. Looking back as an adult, though, it is a pretty strange trend.

Porder, I don't know how much history you have with Roblox, but I do feel that you could do an honorable service for an iceberg on that. I've been on the platform since 2009 and I'd love to see your take on a video over one. I know it's a real minefield of a topic, but I do feel that you'd do it justice.

this is such a well done video!! i absolutely love that you included club penguin armies. unfortunately i never got to be part of one, but my big brother was! i always found them so fascinating and admired the coordination, and they actually inspired me to lead a similar group on animal jam a few years later. (which was very successful!!) armies seem to be mostly forgotten now, but i see some people in the comments remember them and/or are even still a part of their communities, which is great!! :D its got me thinking about the other niche parts of the community and its little cliques. stadium penguins, pizza parlor penguins, igloo advertisers, etc etc... i hope someone else remembers them too. maybe through some whim of fate one day i'll find my stadium bestie again. still miss u, pink

I remember the "Pookie" era. I was super young at the time, but you can find it in many other games, such as roblox. It was more of a way to connect with other players than anything but to also act in a certain age/way as there were both adopters and adoptees. It was also really good to seek attention hence why you need to be "adopted" and taken care of. It gave a sense of family as well. My best friend at the time had a membership so we shared his account. Whenever I logged on I put on my girly clothes whereas when he logged on he put on his boy clothes. the best part is that I would have "boyfriends," so when he was on he would have other boys teleport to him and try to flirt.

i got banned from rewritten for saying milf. i also participated in the pookie thing. the whole thing with that was pookies were non-members who dressed in certain ways because they had limited options of clothes and part of it was "getting adopted" meant they were giving you membership (which obv isn't true and no one actually thought it was) but I'm fairly certain most of the people who participated were teenagers making fun of the kids who started it (at least that was my experience with it). Also does anyone else remember sitting in the pizza place looking for someone to date you?

There ARE still Club Penguin fan servers running. For those who still want to play some good old-fashioned Club Penguin, or are parents who want to show your children the fun you used to have, research your options. Choose with safety in the forefront of your mind. You may be surprised. The community I'm a part of, which I won't name in fear of steering others wrong in the off chance I made a mistake (though I doubt it, since I've been in for about a year) recently celebrated 2 million unique penguins. There ARE places to go.

Some info on “pookies” I remembered them from original Club Penguin (I was around 7-8 when I played as one, I saw it as innocent fun at the time, like playing families) and when rewritten came out, I got really bored over lockdown and out of morbid curiosity, I decided to mess about and pretend to be “one of them” again to see what they got up to nowadays. In the short time I was involved, I saw - Someone pretended to kill themselves in real life because they didn’t get picked. They did this twice - in one game, one pookie kept saying (in character) I looked “hot and sexy”. She was roleplaying a 2 year old girl. I was playing as her 3 YEAR OLD BROTHER - One person revealed they had a piss fetish, and spend a whole game crying about having … a red rash … “down there” - One person confessed to being 35 years old - one user was playing a character who was a grown man who had a head injury and needed to wear diapers - Several occasions where pookies would roleplay dying of cancer I wish I was joking, but the community is absolutely as depraved and weird as you might think
