The Mysterious Life & Death of Superman George Reeves: Story Location Tour Part 2
George Reeves immortalized the role of Superman and his alter ego Clark Kent on TV's "The Adventures of Superman" (1952-1958) However he is probably most remembered for his untimely and tragic mysterious death, that to to this day still conjures up various theories. In this Story Location Tour we will look at so much more than just George's last days. In Part Two, we will continue to see where George filmed his iconic Superman series and will meet the people in his life who may have been responsible for his death at his home in Benedict Canyon. Eddie Mannix, Toni Mannix, and Leonore Lemon.

Just finished your videos on George Reeves. Thought they were very comprehensive and respectful to the memory of Mr. Reeves and his role as Superman. I am in my 70s and was a huge fan of Superman and always saddened by the idea of his suicide. After watching your videos, I am happily inclined to believe he did not take his own life. Great job. I couldn't help but remember my brother. We owned a comic shop in the 1980s and both of us were big DC fans. He was more a Batman fan but we fell into a bit of fun with the Christopher Reeve Superman. Christopher was quite a bit different from George's portrayal, both of us were old enough to have seen the show as kids, second run (he was born in 1953 and I was in 1957). So, with the new movie coming out, we tapped my now-ex husband, who was 6'4 and blonde to be the Superman for our helping the theater with crowd control. Our Starbase group did that for most SF/Fantasy movies in the 80s. I made the costume, we discovered that the tights weren't thick enough so we had to shave my ex's legs and dye his hair. We did it in the back of the shop and my silly brother charged $.50 to come catcall during it. We also took Superman to the hospitals to visit both the kids and the geriatric wards. George Reeves was a great Superman, my first and honestly, I liked it better than the Christopher Reeve one. I did get to meet Kirk Alyn and was a guest liaison for the convention we had him at. It's just sad that someone thought of killing George Reeves, and yes, I do believe that was a murder. Thanks for the video tour.

GREAT couple of episodes. I grew up across the street from Jack Larson (and Jim Bridges) and their Sturges House. Great guys. Terrific neighbors. In fact, Max, the sweet dog in the pic you showed of them, was a stray I found hiding in my parent's garage back in my junior high days. We already had a big dog so Jack & Jim adopted him. Max would stand on his hind legs and look over the street from that big redwood balcony. Jim died way too soon but Jack was a constant in my family's life til the day he died. :)

The lemon sisters were my grandpa and his brother's best friends. My great uncle was the drummer on the Mike Douglas show. I met the sisters in the late 80s and again in the early 90s at their home in paradise Valley, Arizona. They were super sweet. If only I'd known then to ask for all the stories, my mom kept mumbling that they seem so nice but there was something else there..... My grandpa knew the truth, but went to the grave without telling us.

Thank you for enlightening me about this man. His concern for children, charities, benefits...why isn't all his goodness remembered? I do remember the tv series as I'm 74 now. I remember hearing of his suicide, but I wasnt a big fan. I hope someday he'll be re-established as a humanitarian who truly cared about his little fans and children's lives. I have always thought Eddie Mannix ordered a hit on George Reeves because he hurt Toni. He still had enough power to have it declared a suicide, no investigation, wrap it up. I also have thought the people in the house that night knew far more than they let on and took their secrets to their graves. My main problem with Lenore Lemon being involved is, what was her motive? Why would she want George dead? This is the first I have heard of "Superman" going back into production for a 7th season. George was looking forward to it, so why would he kill himself? I learned about the sketchy circs surrounding the death of George Reeves many years later, I think during the 1970's, when I was in my twenties. I loved the show in the early 1950's and I don't think my parents told me anything about his death when it happened. Also, I don't remember kids at school talking about it at the time. I was an adult when I found out. Thanks for a great presentation! I wonder who owns George Reeves' house in Benedict Canyon now? And I wonder who owns Toni Mannix's house?

Toni called for the hit, via Eddie Mannix, and a hit can never be called off, whether or not she tried to. A blond hitman was called in from out of state (Pittsburgh) to do the job, then he went back right away, as such things were done back then. Why was Lemmon upset with George? She knew about the hit soon about to happen. Lemmon also flew out of town to avoid her being next on the list.

I just turned 75, and I remember watching "Superman" on TV in the early 1950's, when it first came out. I was in pre-school. When I first saw GWTW in 1961, I didn't immediately recognize George Reeves as Stuart Tarleton. I think I learned that several years later, when I read more about the cast of the movie.

This is one of the best tellings of the life and death of George Reeves I can even imagine, you truly are a genius, taking the telling of Hollywood legends to new heights with your videos, which I can not get enough of! You have an amazing career ahead of you with this knack for narrative. In 2003, I was on a book tour for my anthology, ‘TVparty! Television’s Untold Tales.’ One of the stories in the book was The Death of Superman, for which your afore-mentioned Jim Nolt was a huge help. I was at appearing at Bookstar in Studio City when I noticed a woman off to the sides, attempting to be non-chalant, pulling out books to look at, but I was aware she was listening in and the Reeves story was one I always told, “a mystery to this day,” right? When the last person left this lady emerged from the stacks and introduced herself, of course I don’t remember who she was but she did have an air of shabby sophistication about her, the kind you can’t fake. Shabby you can fake, sophistication you can fake, but not that ‘black sheep of the family but still in’ energy. Keep in mind - this is what this person TOLD me. No idea if it’s true. This lady told me she was a friend of Leonore Lemmon in New York in the 1980s, Lemmon had a lovely penthouse and was well taken care of she told me. One evening drinking and talking, Lemmon confessed to killing George Reeves. Don’t recall if she had described it as an accident or on purpose - but 5 bullet holes would be a major indication of intent. Again, I have no way to know if this woman was credible, Leonore did live out her life as a New York socialite, which is something I had no way of knowing then but just confirmed. She also had dementia reportedly… Appearing at one of the Hollywood Shows at the Beverly Garland Hotel that year (or next?), I met Noel Neill. She was so gracious. When I handed her a copy of my book, out of respect for the great lady, she saw the screen cap I used on the main page, sighed and whispered softly, “Oh George…”

I remember hearing about it. I was twelve when it happened. At the time I lived in Los Angeles. I was shocked and had sometimes watched Superman in black and white. Somewhere about three maybe four years after George died the case was reopened briefly and closed again.

Well, just finished Justin,s documentary this morning. I grew up with the Superman TV show and recently picked up DVDs of the first season since i had no streaming access to episodes. Also started looking here on KZbin for more content and came across Justin's work. This documentary was absolutely awesome. Can not believe the detail and production values that went into this work. Nothing but admiration for Justin. To say he should have his own show somewhere on cable or elsewhere is an understatement. TCM would be a great landing spot for him. i learned so much about George Reeves and some the cast of the show and Hollywood in general by watching this. Have not been to Los Angeles in quite some time but this documentary is a great calling card. LA home of Superman and the Doors, Doesn't get any better.

There was a history of depression and suicide in his family. He was taking pain killers ever since a car accident and was drinking heavily at the time. His mother was a wack job. His first wife left him because of his lack of success and his relationship to his fiance seemed to be on the downside. He was about to go back to a show that he obviously didn't respect and his youth was fading. He was trapped in a role without any prospects of ever becoming a movie star. He never really recovered from the director, that was going to put him in starring roles, dying during ww2.

I was a little kid when he died and vaguely remember it as feeling strange, kind of like hearing Santa Claus died. Heard that story about the kid who brought his father's gun when he went to see George at a supermarket gathering or something like that. Thought it was in the newspapers, but it could have just been another kid who told me and it's just an urban myth. Fun, very detailed video on Reeves!

Boy did I love Superman! I was born in 57, remember watching it when I wax probably about 7. We actually lived in Rodando Beach in 61 for a year. I’m from Rochester NY, and we moved back to Rochester in 62, I didn’t return to LA until 2016. I love it there and wish my mother and step father had the sense to stay there rather than come back to NY. My life would have been far different if. Anyway, great presentation. Thanks for these excellent 2 episodes on George Reeves. I was fascinated by his childhood background and experience at the Pasadena playhouse you provided, which I did not know. Per the EJ Fleming book "The Fixers," which is largely about Eddie Mannix and his Hollywood 'fixing' career, one of the unsolved mysteries about Reeves's death is that the bullet that killed him, passing from one temple to the other, ended up in the CEILING of the bedroom he was in--meaning George would have had to have his head tilted way to the side for that to happen, which doesn't make sense for a suicide; and that the body should have fallen forward, not backwards.. Fleming himself believes Leonore Lemmon killed George, noting she was a drunk with a violent, impulsive temper and she knew how to use guns. The delay in calling the police was probably for all the guests in the house to concoct a story; and all of them gave the police the exact same story. Fleming says it was Leonore, not Gwen Dailey, who pulled the bloody sheets from George's bed and then dumped them in the bathtub. He also said the $4000 in traveler's checks were for a trip to Spain George was taking at the end of the month for a film project, so he wasn't despondent about his career, nor was he intending to marry Leonore. Toni Mannix never got over George's death, and spent much of her last years watching "Superman" reruns; she was obsessed with him to the end. A sad story, thanks for covering it so completely and for all those amazing tours of the actual locations!

The fact that "Jimmy Olsen has worked had directed a couple of movies with "Wonder Girl" is a cool connection. In regards to Toni Mannix's "confession", it's possible that she said she was responsible. But, that's probably because she wished him dead not because she was actually involved. However, someone who was at George's house was involved.

Justin,very well done episodes on the life and death of George Reeves. Thank you. Such a tragic loss. Alot of current actors can take a page from George Reeves on his appreciation and hard work in his craft. You brought out about how unfortunate it is that the Superman series hasn't had the run in sindication that the Lucy show. I was thinking; maybe all the movies of Superman since the 80's(?) may have put a damper on the reruns of the TV show,and a couple of generations have related to these more closely and with the advancement of special effects since the series,they would kinda roll their eyes,even though back in the 50's,these were top of the line. I don't know 🤷. Anyway,thanks again.

Interesting assessment! You might be right. I'd love to see it air somewhere again, perhaps MeTV, or even on one of the streaming sites. Season 1 is very noir, a tad darker. Then it gets more campy but I think there's definitely a place for it in today's world of entertainment.

Wasn't he also friendly with Robert Walker? In so many books, Jack Larson is quoted as an inside source- I wish he could have written his own book. ZIV Studios is also where they filmed Sea Hunt. Also a slight clarification re hospital Reeves was taken to following his car accident. That hospital was Cedars of Lebanon located at 4833 Fountain Ave. in Hollywood. This is the location Reeves would have been taken to in 1959. Later the hospital did indeed become Cedars-Sinai and moved to it's present location of 8700 Beverly Blvd. Los Angeles. One other thing, there ARE parallels to night of Marilyn Monroe death (murder?) in the 2 cases. Mrs. Murray (her housekeeper) was ALSO seen operating the washing machine at her house the night of MM's death. Looks like the same thing happened in this case. Suddenly evidence ending up in the washing machine and the police don't know WHO did it and WHY. Smells of a cover-up. In BOTH CASES why was the washing machine ON and being used when the police arrived at BOTH death scenes, WHY? Somebody(s) hiding something.

Ironically, out of George, Lenore, Toni, and Eddie, Only George had zero mob ties. Meaning that Eddie would not have been able to set up the hit against George if he was connected, because he'd be untouchable. Also by that same rule, Eddie was also unable to set up a hit against Lenore, which Toni would have loved. So the cleaner George was, the more vulnerable he was.

32 minutes in you raise the issue of the spent casing under the body. I haven't spent time in the police records, if that's possible, but I have always heard the firearm in question was a .30cal Luger/Parabellum pistol. Toggletops eject out the top and their empties go everywhere. For the relevant brass to be strangely placed might mean nothing in this case.

Why was Lenore able to go into the house and take the travelers checks? That was not her property. They were not married. Such poor police work back then but the studios did own them. I still believe he was killed and NOT suicide. I'm not a male or an actor but how odd that George REEVES and later Christopher REEVE would not only portray Superman but both died sadly. Yes I know what happened to Christopher Reeve-- horseback riding horrid injury that led to his death. Still the SURNAMES are oddly almost identical. Such tragedies!😢 And I will always think that George Reeves was murdered.
