For several weeks in March of 1978, a quiet and unassuming community in the north of England became the site of a media circus, following an inexplicable incident. Who or what was the mysterious figure reported to the authorities, and did it ultimately contribute to the death of its only witness? This week, we recount the mysterious Risley Encounter.

I'm laughing my ass off at the idea that the man made this story up as a way to excuse getting home late. Wife: "Honey, where have you been?! I've been waiting for hours!" Husband: "Uhhhh I got stopped by an alien robot and it shot an energy beam at me." Wife: "Oh ok." If he'd really wanted to lie to placate his wife, I think he would've said he stopped to help someone with a flat tire or something normal, instead of inventing a monster.

When swamp gas and weather balloons have been discredited then discredit the witness by any means necessary. I love when photos are blurry and you can’t make out things clearly for whatever reason and they say you need a great deal of evidence and discount the photos but when they are clearly visible in a handful and experts say no tampering was found by photography but discount the clear images as being too visible therefore also discredited. Do I know what is going on? Absolutely not, but we are very arrogant thinking we are the brightest of any other group in our history and that there is so much we don’t know even with our giant leap forward in society in regards to understanding both the cosmos and our planet with much hidden in caves and underground and in bodies of water of all types across our planet. Less then 10% of the ocean has been studied and just know we couldn’t agree how to get through a global pandemic and discounted science every step of the way. So it’s any wonder why they wouldn’t tell us if it is indeed provable. No toilet paper would be the least of our problems if this subject ever gets a clear answer. I can just hear it “ don’t approach the Alien crafts or try to apprehend one.” American : you can’t tell me what to do..... I ain’t a no sheep so stick it in your back foot you socialist. Fake news fake news!!! 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️ Seriously, can you imagine the aftermath of that press conference??? God this country ... and world needs an enema.

His hand was quickly burned without any source of flame, his radio was fried, and he got cancer? And all this was right outside a nuclear facility? And he was drunk? And there was someone in a body covering silvery outfit with what looked like a black void for a face? And the people at the plant investigated the area thoroughly, were unsurprised, wouldn't let anyone near, and were weirdly defensive? And there was a dead rabbit with no obvious injuries? And it was night? Sounds like a radiation leak, someone in a hazmat suit, and a bit of hallucination or skewed perception.

A radiation leak that caused his hands to burn immediately and fry his radio takes at least 5000 rads. It doesn't make sense for his hand to be the only thing that burned. And also, if he did get exposed to that much radiation, he would've been dead within 3 days as he slowly melts into nothing.

It's been a long time since 'police stations' where you could walk in and report crimes existed anywhere near where I live. Nowadays, you have to call 999 and report the crime on the phone where you'll be given a crime reference number and nothing will be done about it, unless you happen to offend someone online, in that case you'll be going to jail!

The energy beams and the damage they caused remind me of the tale of the Greenham Common women's camp that was protesting against a nuclear plant in the 1970s iirc. They too reported strange sensations and burns that were thought to have been caused by some sort experimental energy weapon. Would be cool to see a Bedtime Stories recounting of that incident.

The US military was/has been experimenting with microwave energy weapons. This works by emmiting a [directional] microwave beam towards a crowd (protesters). This crowd experiences pain & discomfort - which increases the closer one gets to the microwave transmitter. Which is usually mounted on to an RV /tank type of vehicle. The idea is "no touch" "non physical" crowd control. There were a few videos of it on you tube few yrs ago. Doubt theyre there now as Google censors stuff now☹️. Could try searching for them.

Simon's writing is great. I'd never heard of the Risley Encounter, so I didn't know what was going to happen; the introductory scene had me asking with increased anxiety, "what?! What happened? Who's that guy? What did he see?!" as the story slowly built. Masterful storytelling!

The description of this being has a striking similarity to the Solway Firth Spaceman, namely the bright white/silvery full body suit with a dark visor and both being seen in the UK. It seems that whatever might have been encountered in 1978 was a lot less benign than the Solway Firth Spaceman, however.

So basically a staff member pulls a stupid prank, he is walking back to the facility and over the road when this guy sees him and stops. The guy in the suit looks at the car and the light is reflected from his eye protection. The guy in the suit walks off and through a small door in the fence. At some point through all of this the radio short circuits and burns the drivers hand. Aftewards his drunk state twists things up. The security staff try to shoe the cops away because they want to hide the fact that a staff member did something so stupid. The guy has a ptsd attack when he is on the same piece of road again. He also develops kidney cancer at some point in his life, which could contribute to all of these encounters.

I could really relate to this story. I remember 1978. I had a similar encounter only it was slightly different in that I was taller than the mysterious figure I encountered. I was dressed in gold and if I remember correctly the figure was wearing s cheap imitation copper blue suede suite. I tried to get him to join me for some pancakes at Perkins but he didn't seem interested. "Maybe some other time," he said as he vanished into a nearby wooded area. Anyways, another well told tale. Keep it up, lads!

15:00 I’ll be honest. I’ve been drunk before. REALLY drunk. Pass-out-in-the-woods-with-friends-for-hours drunk. I’ve never been so drunk that I could have hallucinated whatever that was. The notion of it being a drunken lie to pacify an angry wife, followed by the sober decision to double down? That makes much more sense to me. Either this was something he actually saw, and the details may or may not be totally accurate; or he was just trying to insult his wife’s intelligence and it apparently didn’t work because she took it hook, line, and sinker.

The prevalence of glowing red eyes makes me think that whatever phenomena these sorts of things are, they're "fitted to" humanity in some way, either generated by humanity as some kind of collective tulpa or interpretation of something we can't otherwise perceive (whether physically present or entirely entoptic), or crafted as hand puppets by mischievous alien beings who are having fun tormenting the local animals (I would suspect the little big-headed guys aren't the "real" aliens, either-The real alien would probably be the machine intelligence of the UFO itself). Most of the things described in stories like this seem a little too conveniently tailored to human sensibilities for them to just be going around like that all day or having a life outside of us. Though maybe they literally don't-A lot of these encounters could easily be with "real" creatures that simply live in inner space like the mental version of your gut bacteria, making up the ecosystem of your subconscious and mocking the distinction between hallucination and real encounter. That wouldn't explain the physical phenomena, unless you're willing to entertain being "dragged" to a timeline where those are the things that happened. (Colorlessly glowing eyes are scarier anyway... Watch, that's what _I'm_ gonna eventually encounter, now)

ever seen the movie Phenomenon? the flash of light he saw was caused from his cancer. the burns an marks, thats cancer too, in fact, the cancer made him hallucinate the whole thing that was just an example but point is be weary when speculating scenarios, its always good to be unbiased and show skepticism, but i think it would be sufficient to simply remind us that all that correlation is not the same as causation

Lol, that was my very first thought, before he even got to the part that the dude was in fact drinking until late that night. And the only excuse he could come up with in his drunken state, was this hilariously stupid story. He did not expect his wife to take it this seriously, and drag his ass to the police station to report it. Which also explains perfectly why he was so reluctant to return to "the scene" with the police officers. It was because he was scared they were going to expose his idiotic excuse to his wife. XD XD

Great narration and images, as always. Is what the man saw on the road an extraterrestrial or a prank gone wrong? It is difficult to say because of the circumstances. The radio in the van that was destroyed should’ve been looked into a little further as well as the health condition of the man. Was his health brought on because he was frightened by what he saw that night or was he afraid of being chastised harshly by his wife because he was drinking and had come home late? And what about the pain in his right hand? He died from cancer of the kidneys, but what was the cause of the cancer? I guess medical science had not found anything in 1978.

You know what will cause real hallucinations is cough syrup -- dextromethorpan. And not fun hallucinations, like mushrooms or LSD give you. I remember having a nasty cold and being on a deadline for work, and seeing, like, ape-aliens in white coats. Who were telling me I should give my ex another chance. It was the weirdest experience lol. It didn't feel real at all though. It was more like, "Note to self: STOP DRINKING COUGH SYRUP STRAIGHT OUT OF THE BOTTLE."

Yeah, for real. I've seen the back of my friends car turn into a monster at night, but that was after some questionable grass that was most likely laced. But never from just drinking. It's usually when you start mixing things that shit gets crazy.

@@Kersich86 Sure, but there's loads of questions: if Big John had indeed donned his silver suit that specific evening, was he in that specific spot - to be seen by the van driver? Is there a side gate in the metal fencing at that spot? Or not? How tall is Big John? Also, how much did the protagonist drink exactly? Because it's very unlikely that it was so much that he'd have visual and sensory hallucinations of this magnitude. Also, the destroyed radio and burnt hand were not hallucinations. So yeah - too many factors to just sweep the incident under the carpet.

@@rheinhartsilvento2576 The Big John thing seems like a cover up. It wasn't revealed until years after the incident, despite police at the time doing a thorough investigation, and it relies on some pretty major coincidences (specifically the radio spontaneously combusting just as Big John crossed the road). My guess is that when the rumours didn't stop, and Kenneth Edward's declining health seemed to prove his story, they decided to try to sabotage his character by accusing him of being drunk and creating the prank story.
@rheinhartsilvento2576
@rheinhartsilvento2576 3 жыл бұрын
@@sbird8675 Yeah, tbh, this sounds a lot more plausible. I feel that in a good number of these extraordinary cases, there are more or less effective attempts at cover-up, minimization and /or character assassination of the protagonists. Most people are incurious and lazy, and once a "common sense" explanation is planted in their brain, they will just parrot it, without attempting to actually fact-check or investigate anything. But will go on to be "sure" that such and such "can't " happen.

As I said to another commenter: I usually believe that something entirely rational has happened in accounts of the unusual, but in this case, the rational story has more holes than a Star Wars script written by J. J. Abrams. It's easier to believe in a case of atomic experimentation than the whole mess of drunk/prank/conicidence offered up as an answer.

@kawadashogo8258
@kawadashogo8258 2 жыл бұрын
I wonder if maybe the silver man didn't walk through a solid object at all, but through a gap in the fence. When I was a kid, the playground of my school had a part of the fence where it still appeared to be attached to the fence post but actually was disconnected from it so you could pull it away like a curtain and walk through. Me and some other kids used it as a shortcut to get home, as my house was in that direction and the alternative was walking all the way around the baseball field. Perhaps the fence around the fire station had a similar thing, a slight gap where it was disconnected from the fence post so you could pull the fencing away like a curtain and then put it back in place once you've walked through. To a guy watching this in the dark from his vehicle and while allegedly slightly intoxicated and already a bit freaked out by what he was seeing, a guy walking through a gap in the fencing might appear to be walking directly through the fence. I'm not saying I think this is what definitely happened; I just think it's plausible. Of course that doesn't explain the radio and the burns on his hand though.

it's funny how almost always the skeptic explanations are more nonsensical than the paranormal explanation. like first of all what alcohol causes hallucinations like that? maybe absinthe but who tf drinks that shit? besides even if Ken was drinking absinthe he wasn't just driving a car, but he drove to a police station and managed to convince the police that he had experienced something strange. at this point he should have been caught driving under the influence, but of course he didn't since he was sober at that time. and when it comes to the fireman, what the hell was he doing walking in a dark road wearing the fireman suit? do the skeptics not understand how a prank even works? if he pranked the students at the dormitory then he did it and was done with it, there was no reason for him to walk around a dark road and assume that some random passerby is going to notice him and react to his presence in a funny way. on the other hand this case does have some interesting details, there have been other cases where people around the world have reported seeing these strange metallic men who do not have articulated limbs. similarly these encounters involve the metallic man turning towards the witness, looking at them and continue their journey (not to talk about the weirdly specific radiation damage and the messing with electronics).
