Professional Japanese translator here! I've been following the story since the first video. Here's some additional info based on the article and additional research on my end that might enlighten you: 1) The owner was Kodera Yuuji. The person interviewed was not necessarily his son, but an unnamed surviving male in his family. 2) After contacting a Japanese legal interpreter I'm close with, it's likely that whoever owns the property the statue is on now owns the statue, too. Unless there was something in Kodera-san's will specifying who it would go to, the acting property owner has it. 3) The male interviewed indicated that Kodera-san probably would've touched up the statue with paint himself, but didn't indicate they were interested in doing so. Unfortunately, the building on the property looks like it's pretty old and not particularly wealthy. It does not seem like anyone there would have the money to save the statue. After all, it doesn't just need a paint touch-up. Sadly, I'm not in Japan at the moment and may not return for a few years. Otherwise, I'd offer to reach out to the family, or visit and stay a few days to talk with them about their interest (and enjoy myself). I've never passed the place, but I did live in Aichi and took a few trips to those mountain areas in Mie, just shy of Nabari (which is really close). It wouldn't really be a lot of trouble to talk with them. We'd just have to convince them we mean well and simply want to see the smiles of the people there and around the world. Personally, I don't want to see that hand crack off and fall into the road. The people around there (in my experience) drive like maniacs and the mountains get really foggy in the morning during the spring and summer.

@Junosensei5 жыл бұрын
@@EmeraldEtherious - I mean, as long as you know Japanese well, too. Considering I've seen professional translations in official products that carry some pretty amateur mistakes (Heatran in Pokemon XY's main city), it really depends on who is hiring you and possibly who is checking your work. But I can't judge your experience. I became a professional translator before living in Japan, but I also spent years learning the linguistics and most of my childhood immersed in it. There are learned cultural cues you can't pick up from reading a language textbook or living in Japan alone, and I'm not talking about tidbots you learn watching anime. I mean weird things like knowing how to hand out papers the culturally accepted way and how that affects what someone might have to say to you regarding your position, or the language you would switch between when hosting a party or wedding, or the kind of audible linguistic slurs used specifically over the phone or by a store associate/cashier/clerk regardless of politeness or distance level between speaker and listener. These verbal cues, including audible ones, are often hidden in plain sight in Japanese text. Translating word for word, based solely on aspect, tense, etc. is going to probably be enough to net you a job if your employer is just as amateur, but it won't really help you as a professional if you intend to translate essays, scientific literature, pop culture literature/manga/anime/games, etc. or be crazy and go into government-level interpretation.

If you look at the landmark for "the mysterious sonic statue" on Google maps, they'll give you all the nearest airports, cities and communities. I hope the statue gets restored, but it should also be returned to that exact spot immediately after. Restore it in a way that it can last outdoors for a long time. It’s only a win-win situation for both tourists and the owners of the statue. I don't know how the Japanese generally feel when it comes to restoration or if there are any traditions against property being tampered with, but to refuse restoration and leave it be would only result in tragedy. I really hope the owners will agree to let it be fixed.
@freezetile85885 жыл бұрын
Am I the only one who thinks it shouldn't be left outside? It's a one-of-a-kind historical item. After all, with all the extra exposure the statue's getting, it's becoming more and more likely that somebody's going to steal it. As Indiana Jones once said, it belongs in a museum! >:-(

The story behind this just gets warmer and warmer. I feel like (with the family's blessing of course!) restoring the statue and making it a staple with a longer life outdoors would really be a wonderful thing to do in Kodera-san's memory. It would be a positive memory for the family, and I believe seeing the process of that statue restored would not only reflect positively on them, but many who had interest as well! I really hope everything goes well. With so many troublesome things in the world today, and in the past, it would be a positive work of art. I am all for it being taken somewhere to be restored as long as it's brought back. The story of this statue is quite touching and goes beyond being just a piece of video game history. The man who owned this put it here so people could come together, and now it's brought so many people around the world together to find out the story behind it after his passing. In a way, as cheesy as it sounds, it stands to be a symbol of coming together to do something really cool. That's something very special that should always be remembered in my opinion. I think it's pretty easy to assume the statue is a memory of their father and they closely resonate with it. I wouldn't want to rob them of that. At the end of the day, we all want the statue to be saved! I think you should reword your comment. I don't want you to deal with any backlash 😅

This was a great bit of history, I learned about the statue with the first video and now the story has an ending of sorts. Hopefully it gets restored! A small figure of the statue would be super neat too, it's a great looking Sonic.

I've never been a huge Sonic fan, I never cared for the games or shows. This is different, though. I've been following this story since your first video about it and I can appreciate your video archives on the topic. It went from some local mystery to a heartfelt story. I too want this statue to live on for ages, I wish to see it fully restored to its former glory in honor of the kids' father.

It's crazy to see how much rapid development this Sonic statue story has received to the point where even Japanese news outlet have reported. I...feel incredibly content and satisfied with this. It feels like this is the ending of this story all things considered. Epilogue would be whether or not the statue is fixed or nothing happens and it sadly withers away, but man, at least I'm just thankful for how supportive Sonic fans and everyone have have been with this. It's a bit weird to say, but I'm honestly grateful to say I was alive to see this mystery unfold to its conclusion here. Thanks for all the updates, Luty!

I would have loved to meet Mr Kodera when he was alive, he sounds like a very kind man, he’s one of those guys who you hear about in little wholesome stories, it especially annoys me that mean and awful people may last longer than Mr Kodera, his family must have had a really hard time saying goodbye, I’m sure that when the founder of Sega started making slot machines in the early(ish) 1900s, they never would have thought that a blue hedgehog would bring people so close together, this story fills me with many emotions, Mr Kodera you will be missed ❤️

I think a good compromise (if the family doesn't want the statue to ultimately be moved away from this location) would be to get it both restored and have a proper protective shine/enclosure and base built around it. I wouldn't want all the work of having it restored/painted be ruined if it's just going to be left out in the rough weather again for years to come. That way it can honor the original owner plus bring more people there to enjoy it. They could even make a plaque dedicated to remembering the owner.

It's a good thing we finally know who owned the statue, but it's truly unfortunate that the owner passed away. I give my deepest condolences to his family.

Also, my idea for the whole restoring thing, based on the previous owner's feelings towards the statue, would be to Restore it with long-lasting materials, then put it in the same place on a pedestrial of some kind, with like an engraving honoring the previous owner, and putting like a little roof on top of it so the rain/snow doesn't affect it directly that often. And also, give it maintenance every two years or so. Then, the statue would maintain it's former glory, while also still being an honorable possession for the family of the deseased owner.

Didn't think a simple Sonic statue from an old Sega attraction would be related to a heartwarming story like that, I was actually thinking the owner would be a mean billionaire or something that wouldn't let anyone touch the statue and would never give it to anyone to restore it, due to its value and rarity. Turns out I was just waaaay off. And I very much agree we should leave it be and let the family decide what happens next. They seem like really nice people, and the possibility of it being properly restored or at least repainted is a really nice one.

We have made really good progress with the attempt to rescue the statue. I hope that the owners agree to restore it so it can stick around much longer than it will in it's current state, but I will respect their decision if they chose to just leave it alone

Wow, The news outlet Jtown did exactly what I suggested in the comments of the other video! I had a feeling the dirt road next to the statue had something to do with the owner. Glad we finally found out who owned it though sad that the owner passed away.
