I don't believe you mentioned why this image is so scary in its context: You (the reader) are opening a few pages of nothing but repeating text, so you probably get bored and scroll very fast to speed through to the bottom, only for this image to pop up at the end. The image is always just sitting there on the page, so you effectively jumpscare yourself. I gotta agree with that one Redditor. The self-made images used are almost always a downgrade. I remember the first image scaring me way more back in the day.

Not to mention the way this image is used in the article. It's not a traditional jumpscare, but it still functioned as one, for me. You get the big hint that you'll see a disturbing image and your curiosity drives you to scroll down to see it, and how much of the repeated words there are drives you to scroll a bit quicker until BAM it's right there on the screen. Obviously we know it's fiction, but the image stayed in my mind for a good month, which was similar to how the article describes not being able to think about much else after seeing the image, as a cognitohazard.

I assumed that the automaton was arcane in nature, being crafted of the two girls' spirits bound to their brain tissue and the chess pieces being crafted of their bones in order to make them easier to possess/manipulate. This would still imply they were capable of feeling pain in the fire, the object they were tied to being part of their former body. However, I don't think they were screaming because they were being burned. I think they were screaming because they were unable to go up in smoke with the flames, unable to escape their bindings despite them being severely damaged. They were SUPPOSED to finally be freed by that blaze, but here they are, still tangled up in the scraps of this profane machine. That'd be pretty standard for SCP tbh.

there's a fucked SCP in Series 6 (I don't remember the exact number) that is basically paranoia that kills you. It's intangible, invisible, and incorporeal beings that can only walk behind you unless you turn around too fast and/or look behind you. They also give you compulsions to look behind you, so they can kill you and steal your soul. The way I described them makes them sound tame but they seriously freak me out.
