BUT a guy does what a guy's gotta do. Saw a video on YT of one guy who had some down corn that ears were falling off of before they could get it picked and he actually raked it up with the wheel rake and used a BELT SWATH PICKUP HEAD on the combine to feed the raked windrows into the combine and thresh the corn out of the fodder... gotta CRAWL and lot of dirt and sh!t goes through the machine, BUT if it's the only way to pick up the crop, well, do what ya gotta do! @@augustreil Yep... once you get it started going up into the head, each stalk coming in tends to lift the one behind it... gonna be a LONG harvest! Several years back my BIL's corn in Indiana was damaged by a windstorm, and while most of it didn't get laid flat or broken off, it WAS *BADLY* "goosenecked" to the point that the stalks were *almost* flat against the ground, went over about 30 inches, and then turned back upwards again... SO you had to run the snouts IN THE DIRT basically to get under the stalks and of course these L shaped stalks would "tip over" as the bases of the stalks were stood up, ears would bust off or stalks would bust off, huge mess. What made it worse is, at the time he only had a 6 row corn head on a 9600 Deere with duals-- you had to fold the ladder in or it'd knock down the outside row of corn on the next pass, because the outside dual tires were actually a little bit wider than the header itself. In the goosenecked corn, it was a nightmare because if you got off the row by even about 3-4 inches, you'd roll the outside row of the next pass FLAT at the base, and couldn't pick it up, if it was leaning AWAY from the combine, and if the outside row of the next pass was leaning TOWARD the combine (on the opposite side of the header) usually the ears or tops of the stalks were getting busted over or falling off... Some of it was SO BAD that he finally just started combining it 90 degrees to the way it was planted, so the goosenecked part of the stalk (upright part) entered the corn head first and was yanked down through the plates and stalk rollers, leaving the lower part of the stalks flat to the ground... Fortunately we didn't have to do ALL of it that way, but it was the only wa to get the really bad part of the fields... Later! OL J R :)

Insurance is just a ponzi scheme... We tried crop insurance a few years and finally dumped it since we didn't HAVE to have it (farming with our own money) and so we just went back to the gubmint-mandated "cat (astrophic)" coverage ($100 per crop per county) required to be in the farm program at that time. If we were still row cropping, I doubt I'd even bother with the gubmint program any more... more hassle than it's worth, not much in it anymore. Every time we DID have a problem, the insurance found some way to weasel out of it... one year we were about 3/4 done picking cotton, had GOOD cotton that year, and we got about 7.5 inches of rain in 4 hours... cotton was under a foot of water in the fields and actually sprouted the seed in the bolls... Even my nearly 90 year old Grandmother, who'd been born and later died on the farm and farmed all her life, said she'd never seen anything like that. Called the insurance they were like, "well, if you were 3/4 done you're over your limit anyway (75% coverage level) so even if the rest is a total loss you get nothing..." CLICK! Totally worthless. Another year we had grain sorghum it got real dry not long after planting and the crop was short and when it put out the heads (exerted the heads) they didn't come up out of the whorl (the top of the stalk/leaves where they join the stalk) very well and then we got a Gulf Storm and about 45-50 mph winds overnight and leaned the whole crop over to about 45 degrees off-plumb and dumped probably 4-5 inches of rain on it... then it got hotter than h3ll and humid as all get-out and with the grain down in the leaf whorl it stayed wet and had a hard time drying out. The insurance guy called me said, "If you're combining and have a load rejected for mold, STOP COMBINING and CALL US AT ONCE!" Okay. SO I'm combining hauling to the egg farm 13 miles away (closest elevator) and they're taking forever testing the grain one day and call a honcho over and he tells me the grain has "xearlenone" fungus and that affects laying hens-- for meat chickens it'd be fine, for beef or swine or whatever it'd be fine, but not layers... so they couldn't take the load. SO I hauled it 26 miles to the regular elevator (where I wouldn't get the premium the egg farm was paying) and they bought it no problem. When I got home, I called the insurance guy he said, "fine go on and combine it, keep the weight tickets and grain quality reports and we'll settle up later." SO "later" arrives and after about 5 weeks I hear a knock on the door it's a mobile adjuster from the insurance company. I get him all the paperwork he takes it back to his rental car (the guy was from Iowa... they had SO MANY CLAIMS that year in our part of the world they brought in guys from the Midwest to help-- bet some of ours end up up there this year!) and I offered him something to drink or work in the air conditioned house since it was pushing 100 degrees outside, he refused. After about an hour I went out to check on him he was sitting in the air conditioned car idling in the driveway, with all these actuarial tables and crap spread out all over the dash and windshield looked like the dashboard of a 747... Offered again he was like "no thanks, I'm almost done". After another half hour he knocks on the door hands me all the paperwork back and says "the check will be in the mail!" A few weeks later I get the check-- for $695 in losses due to mold damage and dockage on the grain. Damned insurance premium for the year was higher than that! We had another situation somewhat like that too and that was enough, I said "screw it" and we walked away from the insurance altogether... Only guys I've seen actually get anything out of the insurance are the one's "farming the system" and do stupid sh!t to INTENTIONALLY SABOTAGE the crop in order to get a big insurance payout... Later! OL J R :)

Would green chopping for ag bag or repaired harvester silo pencil? Definitely a gut punch. I remember Andrew proud of the crop with possible record yields. A hemp manufacturer decortacator would be a great sponsor opportunity. Sequesters carbon in walls, fireproof, bug, mold, mildew resistant. R4 per wall inch. Grow your own hemp, harvest you woods, do hands on hempcrete post and beam seminars building infrastructure. As you promote Hemp, you help all farmers. Less acres in corn and beans means higher prices. We hope. Here's to much higher prices. If you combine the herds, Rotation graze build a winter barn, use wood chips for deep bedding, add corn ( pigs make it into compost for corn) Polyface farms, Gregg Judy. A wife to market farm products would be the perfect match. Cattle, Sheep, chicken, eggs, produce, offer the cost credit on farm day tickets good for discount on 10# boxed beef cuts. 1/4 1/2 whole animals. For farm day pick but pre paid. That would fund expansion of the herd quickly. Share daily electric fence moves with Travis or work together. Except for the winter lot and barn, let the cattle do more work and less machinery for hay and manure spreading. Greeg Judy would be a great collaboration. Great genetics, grazing results in Missouri. Go see for your self.
