The Israelites were NEVER KNOWN AS JEWS! Neither Abraham, Isaac, nor Jacob (Israel) were Jews. The Jews are descendants of ONE MAN, Judah, a son of Israel. The tribe of Judah (Jews) is only ONE OF TWELVE tribes comprising the nation of Israel. Each tribe was began by one of Israel's twelve sons. When the Israelites arrived in the Promised Land (Canaan) the land was apportioned among the twelve tribes according to the instructions given to Moses by Yahweh. Numbers 34) The priestly tribe of Levi did not get a singular portion of the land. instead they were to be given 48 cities plus their suburbs. When the Kingdom Israel was divided after the Death of Solomon, the Northern 10 tribes retained the name of Israel while the southern portion of the kingdom took the name of the largest tribe located there Judah. Judah was comprised of the two tribes of Judah and Benjamin along with many Levites. The northern Kingdom of Israel was conquered by the Assyrians in 721 BC and its people taken into captivity. After the fall of the Assyrian Empire, none of the 10 tribes returned to their land as they had been almost completely assimilated into the society of their captors they had forgotten their true identity. The southern Kingdom of Judah lasted until 587 BC, when it was conquered by the Babylonians, who carried virtually the entire population into exile. When the Persians conquered Babylonia in 538 BC, Cyrus the Great allowed the Jews to return to their homeland, where they rebuilt Temple of Yahweh at Jerusalem that had been destroyed by the Babylonians. The history of the Jews from that time forward is predominantly the history of the tribe of Judah. The Jews have been very successful in pushing the narrative that they are the entirety of the people chosen by Yahweh. This is far from the truth. The Holy Scriptures chronicle and verify this fact.If you can’t properly distinguish the 12 tribes of Israel, then you will be unable to correctly identify them in any ancestral DNA research.

Funny how God is apparently able to identify 144,000 Jews, from the 12 tribes of Israel, during the Tribulation in Revelation 7. I think people are basically "splitting hairs" over this whole issue. Biblically, I don't see this as an issue. All the descendants of Jacob are Israelites. Daniel, from Judea, referred to his people as Israel in Chap. 9:20, and Ezekiel 37 also has an interesting passage: "Again the word of the LORD came to me, saying, 16“And you, son of man, take a single stick and write on it: ‘Belonging to Judah and to the Israelites associated with him.’ Then take another stick and write on it: ‘Belonging to Joseph-the stick of Ephraim-and to all the house of Israel associated with him.’ 17Then join them together into one stick, so that they become one in your hand. 18When your people ask you, ‘Won’t you explain to us what you mean by these?’ 19you are to tell them that this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘I will take the stick of Joseph, which is in the hand of Ephraim, and the tribes of Israel associated with him, and I will put them together with the stick of Judah. There has never been a specific historical country called palestine or a people or language called Palestinian. The country of Israel was renamed Palestine by the occupying British empire to establish their presence in the area but the Jewish people never adopted that name. Just an observation. The 12 sons of Jacob/lsrael were born to 2 daughters of Laban and no mention is made if they have the same mother. Also 2 handmaidens of unknown parentage. The 12 sons had wives of unknown origin, except for Joseph whose wife was Egyptian, thus mitochondrial DNA has to be traced to Isaac's wife Rebecca to find a cmmon link. Using "Palestinians" to designate an ethnic group is pretty fishy. Arabs who call themselves "Palestinians" today have only done so in recent history, and they have origins from all over the Middle East. Most of them descend from Arabs who immigrated into Transjordan and what is now Israel and the territories after Jews began to resettle the land at the end of the 19th century, and especially in the 1920's-1940's. A hundred years ago, the world only knew "Palestine" as the British Mandate, occupied by Jewish Palestinians and Arab Palestinians (along with Samaritans, Druze, etc.).

Ashkenazi Jew means an ethnic Jew, who has been living in the area of Ashkenaz (in North Western - and Eastern Europe) for many centuries - just like the "Sephardic" Jews had been living in Spain for centuries. Sepharad is an old name for Spain and Ashkenaz is the Hebrew name for Germany - so, "Ashkenazi Jew" doesn't mean a Jew from the paternal line of Japheth/Ashkenaz, but a Jew who's been living in Diaspora in Ashkenaz' country since historical times.

I'll answer your question. Jews are an ethno-religion. Meaning they're an ethnicity (sharing language, common history, same origin, same traditions etc), that also share a religion - Judaism. Think about it like native American tribes. You'd say that ethnically, they're part of their own respective tribe, and the members of the said tribe, all have the same religion, believing in let's say a sun God or something like that. Jews are a tribe, like native Americans. Just like you can join some native American tribes by learning their ancient ways, traditions, language, religion etc (not all native American tribes allow people to join, I think), you can join the Jewish tribe, although it's not easy and often discouraged by rabbis, it's possible. The conversion process is very long and you have to really show you want to become a part of the tribe. The process could take 1 year at the minimum, and could take even several years. Hope that explains it.

Please do not keep describing the ancient Israelites as Jews! They consisted of 12 tribes and Judah was just one of them. So many Christians don't divide the scriptures properly - many places in the Tanakh/OT refer to Judah and Israel separately as not all prophecies refer to both. It depends! If you want Israeli citizenship, it depends on your maternal side. It seems to me that ancestry can even be understood as grandmother! Great-grandmother would no longer qualify (my great-grandmother was an Ashkenazi German and married a Portuguese Sephardic - I discovered this after a lot of research). The Israeli government does not (for now) accept DNA testing as "proof" of descent, but it does accept converts. I've been very bothered for several years, especially in recent years about the land of Israel. I keep hearing that the Zionist Jews AKA the white skinned Jews are not real ethnic Jews at all. I've heard that in reality the white skinned jews are Khazarian. The question of Jewish ancestry has been the subject of controversy for over two centuries and has yet to be resolved.
