My favorite story from Coast to Coast! Mel also claimed that he found out about and visited a second bottomless hole, and that they lowered a sheep into that one on a rope and, when they raised it back out, it was dead, but when they cut it open to see why, a small creature came out of it, stared at them, then jumped back down the hole. It's a wild story. The podcast Blurry Photos did an amazing episode on it.

This video doesn't even highlight the weirdest story that I've heard about the hole. Mel supposedly tied off a goat or sheep and lowered it into the hole a good long way until the animal completely went berserk. He quickly raised it up and, according to the story, it smelled of sulfur and soon after gave birth to an extremely deformed creature. Also, when Mel came back to the States, he went on to look for any evidence of other holes like it and found one in, I believe, Oklahoma on a Native American reservation. That was the last thing I heard about the story.

If he bought random fishing line at various times, he could leave the fishing line hanging in the pit when he left. If he came back and wanted to add more all he ad to do was tie more on. The average roll of fishing line is 250 yards at about $2 USD. He would only need 109 rolls to reach 15 miles. This is entirely possible, considering he didn't buy it all at one time, not being aware of the length he needed. But that's just a theory.... A game theory.

As a third generation Ellensburg resident, let me clear some things up. One, Ellensburg is a small town, despite some pretty explosive growth in the last two decades, every local in town knows each other basically. But Manastash Ridge is a natural cliff face on the southern perimeter of the town, a major highway runs through it that connects Ellensburg with our far larger neighbor Yakima. There are a few residences down there, but everyone out that way are very tight knit and my dad was a bus driver for many years so he was quite close with the more rural neighborhoods, and I can say with 100% certainty that my dad nor anyone in our family knew a Mel Waters. Two, the Yakima training facility is simply that, a training facility, for testing munitions and training tank operators and other specialists, they don’t have any jurisdiction to take over land, that would be the responsibility of the county to contact higher authorities. If someone in Ellensburg (which is mostly a farm town) was vacated from their property by the government, the entire town would know. Third, Central Washington University, our local college, has a really impressive film department and MULTIPLE documentaries have been made, probably one every year or two, looking in different areas and talking to locals, none of these investigations have ever turned up anything. So unless the government can kill people, erase them, erase other people’s memories, and coerce college students into joining the smokescreen, it’s all a bunch of crap...

In case anyone is curious, that picture of the giant funnel in the earth was of the Mir Mine (or one of its friends), NOT the Kola Superdeep Borehole. It's got an insane diamond deposit, and is legit crazy deep, but it's not 40,000+ feet deep--more like 1,700+ feet. The actual Superdeep Borehole is now just marked by a rusty metal cap on the ground (round with bolts around it). Not nearly as impressive as the mine, but certainly more accurate.
