It is fascinating the way mosquitos manouver - they are not as fast as a fly, but the way they change directions in an unpredictable fashion, escaping from your sight, is indeed fascinating... (try to kill a mosquito in an open space, say your bathroom... it'll be tough and fun)

I don’t think it’s them changing direction I think it’s just when we try to hit them it causes a gust of air to buffet them and they move in the direction of it.

I don't know if it's just that my eyes have gotten bad as I've gotten older but trying to track them with my eyes in a dimly lit room is an exercise in futility. They literally disappear from view like little ghosts. They are very easy to spot when they're at rest on a wall or the ceiling, though.

That looks really similar to the hummingbird flight. They are probably similar. A small area wing with the same mobility and speed.
