I had a Pauline experience myself when I was 16. Whether in the body or not, it felt like it lasted for weeks of being caught up to heaven numerous times. That was in jail and I was later sent to adult penitentiary for a 5 year sentence. That mystical experience told me not to worry and 2 months later through a series of highly unlikely events, I easily escaped and was free almost 12 years. That wasn’t the end of these mystical experiences and I still have them today. It’s too bad you don’t have any modern equivalent to Paul’s claims and haven’t yourself experienced anything like that. If confronted with my own story and with proof of the escape, you would assume there must be a natural explanation before even hearing the facts like maybe I’m lying or psychotic. Cognitive dissonance isn’t the same as critical thinking but you’d be hard pressed to come up with a natural explanation for my escape and avoiding capture.

My first encounter with the most High God was on mushrooms and not in the heavens. Outer darkness, but then the light came through and was saved. I had to endure forty years in a christian cult but out of that wilderness I decided to go back to the Word and repent. I didn't go up , rather down but forged ahead and would not stop until I got another encounter like we find in the Bible. The Holy Spirit showed up and I got two encounters.

I had something like that last year. I was experimenting with Delt8 for pain relief, and it reacted badly with some of my other medications. Not narcotics, I'm doing everything in my power to stay off narcotics. But I was in hell, literally. I have no idea how long it was subjectively. But I experienced Ezekiel's wheel. But it was terrible. My consciousness became aware of itself and tore itself apart, over and over. I've been on a slow return to Christianity since. Not fundamentalism, I am here after all. But a return to faith. I've been cleaning up parts my life, and my marriage is getting better. It was terrifyingly enlightening.

Hi James. I'm enjoying this video. I have a question. Around the 43:20 minute mark you say, "I think Paul believed Jesus had a human father." My brain doesn't reject that, and it aligns other thoughts and questions I've had. Now my brain in asking, "Then what is the disciple Jesus loved trying to say in the Gospel of John 1:1-5? Do you have any content you can point me toward? Thank you :)

No one answered this question for you… and I can’t speak for Dr Tabor, but from what I’ve heard him speak on and allude to in the past, the book of John comes so far later in the conversation - well after Mark (that was already influenced by Paul’s earlier written letters), and after Matthew/Luke that were largely derived from Mark - so bc John comes so much later, and deviates so heavily from the synoptic gospels, that scholars don’t usually override stuff in the Synoptics and outside literature with the themes of John, even with all the stuff that book has to offer. Apparently, its just heavily influenced by outside consideration as it’s written so much later.

It’s a curious fact that Tarsus in Cilicia was one of the largest ‘hub-points’ of the worship of Roman Mithras (introduc’d in 63 BCE to Rome after the arrest of the Cilician pirates) and thus we see Mithraic language (e.g. ‘put on Mithras’) being employ’d which may also include elements of the ‘Eucharist’ when the flesh of the slain hero is eaten and his blood is drunk (cf Hezekiel 39:17-20) by his initiates … It can be no co-incidence that Shaoul of Tarsus us’d Cilician-Mithraic technical terms as part of his gentile-friendly reach outs for converts in Asia - and many other mystery religious terms from other mystery cults can also be found in the gospel material (‘to you my initiated, are given to understand the MUSTERION of the kingdom but for all those uninitiated, ev’rything is spoken in riddles & dark sayings…’ in Mark’s writings / and of course the Whore of Babylon who ‘rides on the back of the Beast in order to ‘squeeze’ with it…’ in Rev 17:5ff where the technical term [MUSTER ION] is plaster’d on her forehead … The Christian ‘Mysteries’ were sometimes call’d ‘the Mysteries of Melkizedek’ (cf the anonymous levitical Epistle to the Hebrews) by the Bishops when referring to their own ‘Mysteries of Christ’ so it is not surprising to see the Mysteries of Dionysius-Sagreos the wine god being echoed in John’s Wedding at Cana in the Galilee (the same town where since 60 BCE there had been a large temple built dedicated to that pagan Wine god) and the miraculous echoes of the healing god Asclepius or the miracles of Apollonius of Tyana who also ran ‘a Mysteru School’ not unlike Pythagoras (see John 21:11 with the Pythagorean Piscis Ratio involving the ‘mystical number’ 153 &c The more we look for ‘mystery sumbolism’ in the NT it seems, the more we find !! Hi Dr Tabor Loved this video, very informative and I just ordered the book. One thought I’ve always had is that it is rarely noted Paul’s mystical experience (in Corinthians at least) seems to have occurred mainly through the sense of hearing. Nowhere is there mention of a vision, image or sight. The language of this experience seems predominantly verbal: heard, words, utter etc. is there any precedent in Jewish mystical literature for this kind of distinction?

Appreciate this discussion touching on the topic of Man and God's promise of immortality. I've come to my own conclusion based on the name Lord of Hosts (YHWH Tzebaot), and God's first command unto Adam, "Be fruitful and multiply," as further hints that God's objective is to form what might be considered the 'Host of Hosts,' or in others words, an 'Army of Gods,' a future pantheon composed by an innumerable cast of deities all serving the God of Gods(YHWH).

How do you think Paul got himself into the state where he traveled into other realms? I think many Christians fasted; some of them a lot and way too much. Perhaps it was for a lack of food, or maybe it was on purpose to force God to do something people demand that God makes happen. I really wonder how many of these revelations came from fasting too long and too much, which dehydrated people and deprived them of nutrients and sent them into some kind of trance. Many cultures did this to get a vision or prophecy. I don’t think these visions necessarily mean anything. Around the time of Luther and Wesley, people were fasting so much that there health was severely impaired and damaged - so in some sects, fasting fell out of favor. Wesley lamented that fasting had fallen out of favor, and suggested instead to just eat a little less than one desired. The Evangelical Association started in the early 1800s, and they did not push fasting because it could damage one’s health, and that was a sin since it did damage to the body, which was considered the temple of the Holy Spirit. Well, I shall just say that for every good idea that comes along, someone carries it too far. I have fasted to get answers to prayer, and almost ruined my health. And yet, I did get answers to prayer and what I wanted to achieve. It would turn out that when I forced the answer my way, getting what I wanted was not necessarily good for me or anyone involved. I really question some of these practices and ideas. We cannot know what was really happening 2000+ years ago and what was meant in writings that go back that far, and that were changed by scribes over the centuries for whatever reason. Talk about living in and being in the past……it is hard to move forward when this stuff (Paul) is hashed over and over again for some purpose that is questionable 2000 years ago, and in the now. Interesting topic….but it kind of gives me a headache trying to figure out if most of the things attributed to Paul are terribly important.

Really a wonderul conversation, the interviewer just had wonderul questions which were answered so eloquently. Its good that he had been through christianity, messianic christianity and the jewish movements. We can see the result of these perspectives in the conversation. I think its clear to say that noone really understands Paul, either as a mystic, the first christian or a diasporic Jew. Either he is being painted as the enemy or a glorious founder, none of these this are true. Pauline christianity died, the scholars have known this for ages, hes like the first fish to crawl out of water and walk around, but we paint him as an amphibian. Likewise the Orthodox Jews says, 'he was never actually a fish at all' The gross summary here is we really dont understand the historic Jesus outside of a rough cut view of first century Judaism. The law, which law, what did the scribes do that Jesus didnt like, what alternative is he refering to. What type of mysticism was Jesus teaching his disciples, and how exactly does Paul tie into these things. What were his mystical practices in the desert and how far did he take it. Did his mysticism reshape his Judaism? Did he talk with other desert mystics? Was Paul influences by other fringe judaisms of the period such as those in Yathrib or Egypt?

That which is/That I am - simply being aware of being aware - as Life at Large, eternally actualizing infinite potential, because only Eternity can fully embrace Infinity. We transform our temporal caterpillar psyche into an Eternal Butterfly Soul, by integrating our Heart, Mind and Will. When the Heart aspires, the Mind inquires and the Will conspires (combines). To actualize potential: Dream it, Feel it, Do it. The abstract (Heaven) called Love by the Psyche (Firmament) can be expressed concretely (Earth) as a smile, hug, etc, thereby uniting Heaven and Earth. One who knows when to stop is forever safe: Inner/Outer More/Less Better/Worse Yes/No The time of day is always Now.

as i've said elsewhere, the native american prophet wovoka also believed he was taken up into heaven, where he was told the world would be transformed in no more than three years. he also was told things he couldn't speak-- it turned out the reason was they couldn't be revealed sas because they would have infuriated the white people. likewise, paul probably couldn't speak them because the romans would have considered them subversive.

"The journey is frought with danger" What you describe with lucious, "the flashing sun at midnight" sounds to me like a drug induced visual manifestation. Not that I have taken hallucinogenic amines, but I am well aware of there affects if the body does not know how to metabolize them. Again, you have been doing a really good job here, but I would point out esotericism in mysticism is a good thing. As previously mentioned the exclusion of 'trippers' is for their own benefit. But the second reason is this at the risk of using ambiguous 'mystical' terminology. Imagine that you have an infinite plane in front of you, nothing as far as your eyes can see, this is your 'energy' or dream space. Since you are in twilight its empty, but you can if you like fill it with daydreams. It extends endlessly. But the mystic is drawn to the search for higher meaning, but instead the mystic, in all the universe, finds a chasm. The chasm is symbolic of death and the depths of the cavern is our 'energetic' hades (a place were recently dead were defleshed before burial), so that if you approach the chasm, the recently dead may come forth and 'communicate'. So instead of the mystic inviting the past ones into the living energy, the mystic is instead drawn to find away across, its easy to cross, just imagine your way across. But now you are no longer in your 'energy' space, but that of the past. The exclusions are because you dont belong in that place, but you are as a prowler at night. You see structure and you trespass. It is a place of deception and delusion. You can address the past in your energy space and they can, if they desire, answer you. They might seek you out in your space, but to go beyond the chasm risks 'spiritual profanity'. I will not gloss over the issue, there is structure within the realm of the past ones, beyond that description its esoteric. What does that mean, if I give to you a meaning (7th heaven, the realm of the light, the brilliant ones) it would be both incomplete and a deception. The point is that in the depths of the realm of the past we cannot understand the meaning of what their energies have constructed, to us its all a local interpretation. Its like if i say wheel barrow and you understand whale burrow. Its not a translation problem, its an intent problem . We interpret the intention based upon our valuations, but the valuations in the depth are discordant with our reality, we always fail to understand. Thats why its not a place mystics should go, they should close the door to that place and stay in their energetic realm. What is revealed in our energetic plane we can understand. In other words anyone who is carrying on discussions about heavens, 7th heaven trios between heaven and hell, etc. These are the things exoteric. They are speaking of things they do not understand and should not be talking about. And as below we see exactly why. Again getting back to Paul and Jesus, their reality has a messiah coming, and so in their mystical experiences they impute a coming messiah. But the messiah never came. They reach that exterior sense of energy and interpret as something that can transform their world, it cant. The transformation of mysticism, if carefully practiced is a revolution in the mind of the elect (this I think GoJohn gets correct) but the ultimate goal is not heaven (GoJohn gets wrong). If you knew what 'heaven' actually is you wouldn't want to go there. Imagine the original definition, the god of the high sky, there is nothing to eat, there is not enough air, but put this in the energetic realm, there are lofty expectations but little in way of 'energy'. When you think of esoteric mysticism you should think of it not as the seeking out the mysteries of the universe and the divine, but creating a harmonious stage so the mysteries of the inner divine can speak. Its not everyones inner divine, its just yours, that which reaches out to you and speaks through you. Your divine is but a slice of the apple, all the slices make an apple, but its not neccesary that we know the apple and observe from beyond our slice. The most important part of the apple is just your slice. As you might guess im not a perinnealist.

Right off I think you are wrong, you just jump into the vision with no precept upon precept, Pauls first precept is Roman's 1:1 This gives clues to follow, precept upon precept. The part about separated is where the clue separated applies to the vision. Paul is talking about 2 separate Paul's, 1st Corinthians 13:12 another precept this denotes a separation of time, now and then. So the first man is in christ that is who (times past) Paul knew above 14 yrs ago, he was caught up , this is far into the future the rapture. The second man is not in christ , this is the future Paul seeing the time past Paul, as we know he was not a follower of christ but one who persecuted Christians. The second Paul glories in him the time past Paul. So What you may also not understand is that Christ lives in Paul, how else did Paul do miracles in the book of acts. If the last Adam lived in you, you too would raise the dead. When christ came the first time he was the word, the word was God, Emanuel. So in phillipians 2:7,8 ww find Paul speaking of how christ took the form of a servant , Roman's 1:1 Paul a servant, so Paul is saying christ liveth in me. And Paul was obedient unto death, and in the future he will be obedient unto death on the cross. Galatians 2:20 he declares this, I am crucified with Christ, so this declaration is a prophesy of what will come to pass. Paul witnesses to both Jew and Greek , so Paul is the two witnesses, and when he is overcome and killed its on a cross, think about it the jews have been accused of crucifing christ for the last 2000 yrs, they will despise Paul's message of grace and just killing him isn't enough they want to make a spectacle of him. After he dies and then is raised back to life, then the jews will say blessed is he, singular not two or blessed are they. I can go on and on with clues I've found that follow the precepts, it's a story that builds line upon line. Follow the precepts of being separated, there are so many I lose track of them all. Oh and his third visit to Corinth has not yet happened historically, don't tell me he just never got around to it. It's a prophesy of his third visit being for judgement, if I come again I will not spare. He delivers up pastors unto Satan for making shipwreck the faith. God bless you guys, I realize you are scollars, I'm just a old carpenter that God has spoken too repeatedly, he led me to this understanding, there is just so much more to understand but if you don't follow precepts you'll never understand this story. Lord bless

I feel like people who get so entranced with another figure, whether it’s someone they have personally met or someone they haven’t but become obsessed with their persona, that because of their weakness of mind they become fooled into believing that they see them outside of their conscious. They see them and believe they’ve actually met them. Paul as brilliant as he was seems like he’s not only a narcissist but has had a psychotic break and believed he’d actually seen the messiah. This spirit to put the other before self, and suffer, and no church person thinks that applies to them,so true Christians ate the rejected.

So Peter and James ect, who lived with and were taught by christ were very strict when it came tp following the Jewish law. Then Paul who only saw christ in a vision comes along and says forget the law. Paul's version of christianity has won,. Christians do not follow Jewish law which means that they are not following the teachings of Jesus and the original Apostles. They have been doing it wrong for thousands of years 🤓🤓 This makes no sense if there was a historical Jesus. Surely James' church would have said to paul, we lived and were taught by christ, James is his brother, you are just some nut that had a vision. Yet this didn't happen. If you take the historical Jesus out of the equation then no one has any real authority and Paul's easier version of Christianity easily wins
