I am joined by @theamazingscarlett as we enjoy our very first MREs. We also discuss the myth of stockpiling MREs for disaster preparedness and why it may not be the best idea.
In the video we have Menu 19 Beef Patty Jalapeno Pepper Jack and Menu 14 Ratatouille.

I know we didn’t point it out in the video but MREs, like canned foods, can often be consumed long after their expiration date. However, the manufacturers give a 2-3 year expiration date because under regular use conditions that is as far as they can safely guarantee the product. Beyond that date, without a regulated inspection, they cannot be considered absolutely safe. So there is not a true limit upon that date, but beyond that you are risking serious illness. If you don’t know a lot about food safety there is tremendous risk involved.

A LOT of misinformation in this video. The USDA SAYS: The shelf life is highly related to the storage temperature. For example, if stored at 120 ºF or 48.9 ºC (a temperature that could be encountered on desert battlefields), the MRE should be used within a month. Stored at 60 ºF (15.6 ºC), an MRE can last 7 years or more. According to the FDA: Are Dates for Food Safety or Food Quality? Manufacturers provide dating to help consumers and retailers decide when food is of best quality. Except for infant formula, dates are not an indicator of the product’s safety and are not required by Federal law. Are Foods Safe to Eat After the Date Passes? With an exception of infant formula (described below), if the date passes during home storage, a product should still be safe and wholesome if handled properly until the time spoilage is evident (Chill: Refrigerate Promptly). Spoiled foods will develop an off odor, flavor or texture due to naturally occurring spoilage bacteria. If a food has developed such spoilage characteristics, it should not be eaten. That being said I have eaten hundreds of MREs way past the inspection dates and "expiration" dates. Also the KZbinr at channel MRE STEVE has eaten stuff from WWI and WWII and not gotten sick. It's just a matter of moisture ingress and product damage and spoilage. (Which anyone should be able to tell if something is spoiled just by the smell.) There is NO SUCH THING AS A FOOD EXPIRATION DATE! They are BEST BY dates but the foods we have are good LONG AFTER those dates. As for the beverage powders (hot and cold) You would normally have a canteen cup to put them in rather than use the pouch to drink from.

@@Plasmastorm73_n5evv I don’t see it as misinformation to say it does not have an indefinite shelf life as many believe. Individual items break down at different rates and without knowing how that works someone consuming an old MRE takes on a lot of risk. I’m not saying they won’t last a while, only that they aren’t a long term food storage solution without a lot of understanding of the limitations. Not to mention if you can’t say how it was stored for the duration of its existence then how can you declare it safe to eat?

I liked C Rat's too! Except when I had to run or roll with them in the cargo pockets of my field pants! "Strawberry Banana Milkshake?" Those must've been added long after my time eating MREs!

This was a fun video to watch and see you interact with your daughter, and to compare to the more recent ones. Looks like your experience with the MRE FRH was similar to my own (one worked great, one barely at all).

I lay the meal and heating pouch on its side and gently shake it (with flap folded over) to ensure the entire heating pad gets water to activate it. My first MRE didn’t heat well because I think the heating pad wasn’t entirely wet. Afterwards I then set it up on a rock at an angle. The instant coffee is pretty good. I haven’t mastered heating the coffee water in the same heating pouch after the meal is heated. I noticed you brought your own hot water. That’s cheating! 😊

The issue I’ve run into with a lot of military MREs is that the FRHs fail so often. I think the particular chemicals they use have a really short shelf life. As for my coffee water, it’s not cheating as long as I admit I brought it with me 😂

I like the idea of pre-packaged MREs. I had a buddy that was in the Army Reserves when I a tad younger, he would occasionally bring back his MREs from when he was deployed. There were some really good meals in those, some things to this day I wish I could recreate the flavors of. The bulk of the packs were always a problem, he would tell me how they would break everything out of the packs and trade sides and entrees for the stuff they liked, or you know, smokes... 😂 While I wouldn't mind having one or two around to cycle through as my emergency first day meals or short term emergency meals, they definitely would NOT be sustainable for a long term situation. Give me enough MREs to get through the rough spots and a sustainable plan for the long term. 🍻

MREs really are not meant to be a long term food solution. It’s not what they were designed for in the first place. Beyond short term disasters, camping outings, and road trips they shouldn’t be relied on for much more.

@@dadbudgetadventures Absolutely. To me, they are something that, if part of an emergency kit, need to be maintained and are only there for the first 48-72 hours. Depending on the emergency, the last thing you want to worry about is what to eat and how to cook it, MREs get you over that hump. If the emergency lasts longer than that, you need a more sustainable or stable solution. To me, I wouldnt carry more than maybe 2 or 3 MREs in my bugout bag, then enough freeze dried for another few days.
