Honestly, if the N64DD was successful, it could've been the coolest Nintendo console ever made. Just look at the Mario Artist games and F-Zero X Expansion Kit! They were so ahead of their time. There was even gonna be a Mario Artist: Game Maker! I just love imagining what it could've been like, and I'm surprised there aren't any discussions about it. I guess Super Mario Maker could be seen as the spiritual successor to it, but I can't help but feeling Game Maker would be way better. What if you could make a Super Mario 64-like game? Judging by F Zero X Expansion Kit and Mario Artist: Polygon Studio, it isn't an impossibility.

You know, Nintendo make their fair share of mistakes, but to this day, I still love them. I love Sony too, but Nintendo will always hold a special place in my heart. My first gaming console was an NES in 1998, and after two years I moved to the N64, then Gamecube, Wii, and finally WiiU. Not only that, but people like Iwata and Miyamoto have been great inspirations during a time when I was confused on what I wanted to do with my life after high school. I knew I loved writing my own stories, but I wanted people to experience these worlds and characters for myself. It wasn't until E3 2010 that I realized what I could do. I could make my own games. And here's to hoping the NX does well and has an awesome library too.

On the subject of "Ura" Zelda, I feel like that was what eventually became Majora's Mask. The features described about Ura - remixed dungeons, new scenarios etc. - sound like Ocarina Of Time Master Quest but on a slightly larger scale. Compare that to the reason Aonuma was made the director of Majora's Mask. When he was told to do remixed dungeons for a DD thing that would ultimately work with Ocarina of Time, he expressed frustration at essentially retreading ground to Miyamoto. After some talks, Miyamoto then gave Aonuma the chance to make a new full game in the series, just with a strict deadline (which, incidentally, is why Termina has alternate versions of characters in OoT, save time doing modeling and textures, etc). So while Zelda Gaiden may have officially been renamed to Majora's Mask, I can't help but feel Ura was that in-between time.
@TsukinoAzura9 жыл бұрын
7:12 The Legend of Zelda: URA was going to be purely an expansion that would take place after defeating Gannon at the end of OOT. Link would then gain access to some more dungeons and a slightly altered overworld. The team that was working on The Legend of Zelda: URA, didn't like the idea, and struck a deal with Myamoto; If they could make a new game within a year, they would release that game instead of having to work on URA Zelda. Thus Majora's Mask happened. Majora's Mask, with it's 4 dungeons would have most likely been the 4 dungeons in URA. Majora's Mask was originally going to use the 64DD's internal clock to track game events, and it would span 7 in-game days. But because the 64DD sold, SO DAMN WELL, they scrapped that idea, reduced the game's days to 3, and released it on a standard Nintendo 64 Cartridge. Zelda Master Quest is not URA Zelda, it's harder dungeon layouts is not URA Zelda. Master Quest was a 64 DD expansion released in Japan shortly after Zelda OOT to hold fans over until the doomed URA Zelda (Later Majora's Mask) would be released. The player would still need the Zelda OOT Cart and when they launched Master Quest, the DD would read dungeon object placement data, kind of like a streaming ROM hack patch.

By the way, the reason for 64DD was to cut costs of the expensive medium that was cartridges, not a larger storage. It is not that the 64MB cartridges weren't available, it's just that the cost of a cartridge that big was insane. Just like any SSD medium, cost depends on the size. The 64DD disc size could otherwise have been bigger, but if it was, the games would not fit the standard N64 gamecart.

You know, there's honestly some misinformation about Ura Zelda. The name "Ura Zelda" actually means "Reverse Zelda", and was just the nickname for what would have been known as "Zelda no Densetsu: Toki no Ocarina Ura"(or "The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Reverse" in English). With that translation in mind, it does make me believe that Master Quest is not necessarily Ura Zelda revived, but is what Ura Zelda was supposed to be in regards to the rearranged/mirrored dungeons

My take on improving the N64 would go something like this. 1) Make the Magnetic Zip Disks the media of choice. Because it's obvious that Nintendo wouldn't even want to touch CDs since they can't control production of it easily as Zip Disks(but keep the cartridge slot as I'll explain the reasons down the list). 2) Increase the Zip Disk storage from 64MBytes to 256MBytes(memory for Zip Disks was cheaper for them; even back then. Since the price for floppy/zip disk memory had down significantly, it wouldn't have hindered Nintendo financially as hindsight might make others believe). With 256MBytes on the Zip Disks being a thing in this alternate scenario, bigger and better games can be accomplished and achieveable in this case; along with some compression kits put into the mix to keep both 1st, 2nd, and 3rd party devs and publishers satisfied enough for a good outcome. 3) SNES backwards compatibility with cartridge slot. By using an SNES converter(akinned to that of the Super Gameboy) for a price of about $49.99. But allow retailers to have customers trade in their SNES for said converter for free if they already have the console. SNES was still thriving during the 5th generation of gaming. And with SNES backwards compatibility being a thing in this alternate scenario, a new SNES rennasaince could commence in this case; meaning developers new and old could even attempt to try to make some exclusive de-makes of their Playstation/Saturn/N64 games for an already existing audience who are still content with their 16- bit machine(Since that's what Sega did for their Master System when the Genesis/Mega-Drive was new on the market). Like, imagine an SNES de-make of Tomb Raider, or Metal Gear Solid, or Klonoa, or Pokemon, or Pac-Man World, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Banjo-Kazooie, Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Croc, Quest 64, etc. While they will definitely not be the same gaming experiences as their 32/64 bit counterparts because of hardware limitations, the audience for these kinds of de-makes would still be there. So it wouldn't hurt to venture into a different market! 4) Increase the internal RAM from 4MBytes to 8MBytes; while having a RAM expansion Pak sold seperately consisting of 6MBytes. All done to help with faster loading times, and more on screen for the console to handle. 5) Increase the Texture Swap cache from 4KBytes to 8KBytes to have more smoother graphical transitions to have a less blurry texture filters to the games. 6)cancel the Virtual Boy and put all focus on making sure the N64 hardware and software has some extra time to mature at a faster rate than in our timeline without any other distractions coming into play. 7) And finally, have a mid or late spring launch in 96 with Super Mario 64 ready to release with the price point of $299.95 bundled with 2 controllers as multiplayer as an extremely appealing feature to have back then!

Third Party support problems for Nintendo pretty much date back to the Super Nintendo and the rise of CD and 32-Bit consoles. Going with cartridges was ultimately the move that did them in during the N64 as far as 3rd-party support, but even with games like Star Fox and Donkey Kong Country the sentiment tended to be that they were old news. The "kiddie" image fueled by the "No Blood in Mortal Kombat" and Yoshi's Island scenarios also contributed to a decrease in purchased units comparatively, though that's an incredibly superficial issue.

"Another" isn't eactly a perfect translation of "Ura". It's a VERY difficulty term for translators to deal with as it conveys a LOT in a single character and represents a concept that doesn't really exist in English. Clive Mandolin described it in his FF4 analysis is "like Tails on a coin, except it doesn't refer to any part of an animal, and can be used for more than just coins." Ura's full meaning is more like "another, mysterious side hidden from view". One of the better translations of Ura I've seen in in Fire Emblem Awakening, where Masked Marth's version of the Falchion was translated as "Parallel Falchion". It was "Ura Sword Falchion" in Japanese. Speaking of which, a Fire Emblem game was planned for a 64 DD release too. It went the exact same way as Mother 3: got cancelled and was retooled into a GBA game that never got localized. (Binding Blade/Sword of Seals, a.k.a "The One with Roy")

Nintendo somehow was always ahead of time. They wanted to make a CD-reader console, that became the standard, the SNES control layout is used to this day, back at the NES they supported internet connection with system, they tried virtual reality and 3D gaming while the technology wasn't ready, but saw potential and did it anyway. But giving up the N64 DD was their biggest missed oportunity. That thing according to JWittz and Didyouknowgaming represents everything we use in gaming nowadays. F-Zero X is basically the father of Downloadable Content that isn't on-disc and I've heard games like Super Mario 64 run better on the 64DD like higher frame rate and speed, meaning the beggining of patches to update performaces. the 64 DD may also have been the worst thing to happen, because all of the stuff like DLCs, patches, internet connection and VR, would later resurface among the despicable greed of other companies, adding paywalls and microtransactions, using patches to fix a game they knew they could rush and charging $599 from what's basically still a gimmick.

I myself got the N64DD with the whole game library ever released for the system for cheap by pure luck. If you are thinking of buying one expecting to play good games, don't; the games are awful, nothing of major interest or amazing. On the other hand, if you are a die-hard Nintendo or videogame fan willing to spend a good fortune for collecting purposes, the system is pretty unique and gets a lot of attention when displayed in a collection. Many people actually know about the system, but have never seen one or don't even know they were even released. The games aren't too expensive to collect except for the Doshin 2 expansion and the Golf game, which will set you back 400-600$ each. The systems value will probably rise even higher as time goes by, so if you want one grab one as soon as you can.

The 3D consoles for Nintendo seem to follow a pattern. N64 did well, GameCube struggled, Wii did well, WiiU struggled. All have fantastic libraries, but 3rd party support is lacking.
@ethanc.14439 жыл бұрын
+SupremeMarioGamer Unfourtanetly, they'll probably remain lacking in 3rd party support. Nintendo has a really loyal fanbase now that only cares about the classics or already established IPs. Don't get me wrong, I like the classics a lot like Mario, Zelda, DKC, Metroid, Kirby, Star Fox, etc. But we still need a lot of new IPs. Splatoon isn't enough. A normal controller would help them but a more powerful console won't save them at all. Because a lot of Nintendo fans care about only Nintendo's already exsisting 1st/2nd party games and nothing else. More proof includes that the 3rd party games on Nintendo systems usually don't sell well at all. A more powerful Nintendo console would attract 3rd party companies for a short while, but once their games don't sell on the system, they'd be gone in a few seconds.

I dunno, but from an intuitive standpoint, it kinda make some sense: dust and other impurities sound like something that could hinder the cartridge's ability to properly function, so blowing in it could remove that. And, of course, it's unlikely that the average kid from the 90's and the 2000's would be aware of oxydation, and of the fact that blowing in a cartridge actually shorten it's lifespan.

How would a modern cartridge compare to a disk? Like you can get TERABYTE external drives the size on NES carts.

The 3rd-party support struggle goes all the way back to Mortal Kombat on SNES. That system still had it to the end, but that's when the decline started.

Mario 64-2 would've been awesome if they didnt get distracted with ...whatever they got distracted with. lookin at all that extra space in the carts makes me think they could've just utilized that, especially when you think about how much awesomeness was packed into the first Mario64. Same for a third Zelda

I have always wished that when Japan Games get localized after the console the Japan game was on, they would release a edition of the game in English on the original console

I love it when Nintendo puts ports on the bottom of their consoles that they never use.

I remember hearing that the N64 was suppose to be a modular system to begin with. They intended it to be the last console you buy, and you just bought cheaper upgrade units to improve its capability. The memory expansion was the only upgrade they ever released though, and i personally think its the terrible choice to stick with carts that ruined this expansion idea. It could have lasted easily 6 more years, rendering it useless only when DVDs/BluRays became common instead of CDs, if it used a CD system to begin with.

every time I watch a vid on the system...I want it more. IDK, i invision it like an add on like sega cd/32x. could enhance games. eh...even tho nintendo had quite a few fails....can't blame them for trying to be innovative. I guess tho this is the case of showing up to the race a few laps behind :/ still would of wanted to see what a fire emblem 64 game would of been like. Hey....sin and punishment tho. Great vid. ready for part 3 ;)
