18:00 Pistachios. Imported pistachio shells generally had a host of unappetizing stains and discolorations due to traditional harvesting methods in which the pistachios were not hulled and washed immediately after harvest. So Middle Eastern producers and exporters took to dying their product red. But the 1980s saw a decline in imported pistachios as an embargo on Iranian pistachios was enforced. The number of American pistachio producers increased in response and began to increase the domestic supply of pistachios. The new mechanized harvesting processes used by American producers now pick, hull, and dry the nuts before the shell can become stained, rendering the need to dye the nuts to hide imperfections unnecessary.

This movie does have a few references to movies, but largely it's just referencing tropes from cop/noire movies...cliches you see in a lot of other movies. It's spoofing on a genre. Like one thing that isn't often adressed in cop movies is the endless property damage that they are allowed to get away with, or that breaking and entering is somehow okay as long as they get evidence (renders it inadmissible in court), or how criminals in the older movies know they've been got and take a hostage even tho they have a far better chance not admitting to anything and hiring a lawyer, or the rich gay guy mastermind trope, and the lab scene was spoofing on james bond classic lab scenes.

I love seeing first reactions to this. I studied the films by the makers as well a lot about Brooks when I was young. Particularly the amount of resources, effort in time that went into the scene gags. Top Secret! is top notch for that, I've seen filmmakers watch that and their eyes popped during parts of it. It's real easy to overlook all the quality here while laughing at the jokes. And these people get even better at it with each film.
