I saw that in the tool area and passed on it. Looks very beefy but very limited in applications. I really wouldn't have much use for it. The jaws are to shallow. First thing that popped into my mind they only purpose that came to mind was using it for snow tire chains or just chain links....every tool has a purpose and I can't find any for that set. @westllen1, you are correct. I've had one for longer than I can remember (20 years?). It's useful for auto shop mechanics, (like I was) especially for rounded or very rusty hardware. I'll tell you though, one tough job while a customer was waiting and they paid for themselves!

These are my go to . They are amazing I really don’t even bother with vise grips too often anymore. I reach for these 410s first and you can even put a large wrench or a pipe on the upper handle, crank down and whatever your on is in a death grip these will not let go. This tool and a variety of different sized pipe wrenches and you’re good to go. I use them for auto repair mostly and they are great. Rounded brake hard line fittings, steering and suspension is where they shine . In my opinion this is the best tool that Channelock/ Champion DeArment has ever come out with.

As others have said, it’s designed for rounded nuts. It works and works on round things. Grab it and push hard and the angle of the teeth dig in and it turns (or breaks) hopefully. Think of using round jaw locking pliers on stuck nuts. Hex peg in a round hole but they work. Another similar design is the VBW S-Grip.

Before Knipex came along the ChanneLock 410 was THE plier to use when nothing else could get it to turn. I still use the 410’s when I don’t mind destroying the part/fastener, but I always try the Knipex first.

When I was an alignment technician 25 years ago, I used these daily to adjust splined inner tie rods. They were great. I also have their smaller version for battery terminals. I think it was discontinued.

If you’ve ever done irrigation plumbing on a pivot or just irrigation pipe in general, they are the best. These can get places that pipe wrenches can’t. I’ve also used them for tie rods and exhaust manifold studs (when the threads are galled, otherwise just do the double nut method). Ask a plumber!!

This is a beast of a tool! I have had some stuck fasteners and some deformed heads and these things bite hard. They have saved me a lot of time approaching the problem in a different more labor intensive manner. Any tool that works on the flats is great, but this tool bites rounded fasteners and gets it done.

I was gifted a set of the 410's by a contract electrician that I worked with removing old conduit runs at my current job. Their great for removing fittings from conduit and boxes. Plus holding conduit and tubing while cutting with wheel type cutters.

I've had a set of these for twenty years under the MAC Tools brand. Wouldn't be without them but they're a tad brutal. I use them as a last resort tool but they never fail if the task isn't crazy. I like those knipex...

I use the channellock 410 for pipe, rounded nuts and old rusty plugs in place of grease zerks. They are not everything pliers, they are excellect for there niche

Great video, i l like the way you compare the tools in different situations. The channellock 410 is more suitable for round objects, pipes. The knipex raptor is clearly designed for hexagonal shapes, and is more refined in the adjustment mechanism. But as I can see in this video, the knipex cobra is the best in all the situations. You can grab hex or round objects very well, that's why it's my favorite tool, the most universal in my toolbag. I don't have the raptor, but the pliers wrench is a good replacement.

I’m kinda old. Pliers used to be more popular, in like the 70’s. Now, you only need pliers when you’ve exhausted all other efforts, and need to make compromises to avoid a trip to the store. (From the perspective of a general handyman).

Snap on has them called parrot jaw pliers on their website. Same look as channel locks.

My two main ways to use this is to rotate pipe and plumbing or if in an automotive situation to rotate tie rods. For fasteners as some people have said it's for rounded fasteners. Or things that you really do not care about the condition of the fastener and you will destroy and replace or fix a tricky situation instead of using extractors. And it's simple enough to keep in your bag. And when you're doing a renovation you can use that to tear something up that your regular channel locks can't. Pretty much this is a renovators tool. If you don't have this then you're willing to suffer a different way instead of simply pulling out a plier and twisting it out.

I bought a pair about 4 years ago to remove very rusted suspension bolds on my Jeep Cherokee. When the heads would inevitably break off bolts, I would grab the stud with mine and slowly twist them out. It definitely mangled the studs so I knew it was gripping very tight. At that time I had some Cobra clones from tractor supply that failed to give me the grip needed. I haven’t used these pliers since.

Think of it more as a pipe wrench. They are made to get the damaged fasteners that’s been rounded. They work great to bust rounded nuts. Bought them off the snap on truck because I couldn’t find them anywhere around me in store.

I recommend channel lock pilers. Bought a set 20yrs ago. They need some spray paint clear coat but grip better than more expensive brands i gave away to family. Even the mighty japanese brands. Getman ones build better but cost more.

I like these. It's not expensive and well built. For rounded nuts we have some other options like Ridgid's heavy duty pipe wrenches, Knipex and Bahco's swedesh pipe wrenches, Knipex Cobra XL. But all these options are more expensive.

After someone has already wrenched off the corners, those would do nicely to grab what's left. I usually use Vise-Grips as they don't require my constant pressure, so I have not purchased the Channel Lock you have. Just yesterday, I had to use my Vise-Grips on a carriage bolt which was used on an application with no square hole, so I had to catch the round head edge and impact off the Nylock nut. Because I needed to put the whole thing back together, I was able to leave the Vise-Grip on (not have to re-locate the tool) which is more effecient in my thinking.

You don’t have to constantly squeeze the 410’s either. Just like a pipe wrench or Knipex, once you apply a little bit of pressure they “lock” on. You can stand on them and bounce if necessary. Once you lock them on, the harder you push on the top handle, the tighter they squeeze.

I have the 410 Parrot Nose Channellocks on order. You can order them directly from their mfg. in Pennsylvania and they didn't charge me shipping or tax. I've heard a lot of good about them and the Knipex. I like the Rolex, too. I have the Omega Planet Ocean white dial w/orange bezel.

I Knipex missed an opportunity to call them Parrot pliers instead of Raptors. Not as cool sounding but you can't not see how much they resemble a parrot

Knipex parrots are tile-nibblers, so they painted themselves in a corner. But believe me, raptors are stonking: smallest of places and still result. I can put up with standard socketry, but pliers have to be good and never nip my fingers. So a lot is Kn-x. Good vid, thanks!

I got the 410 nut buster at work. It's good at applicaiton where you say fk-all to a nut fastener and tear it off. It ends up digging into the bolt's side and dragging the teeth into the brass or soft metal. Designed for rounded nuts or stuck ones where replacement is going to be done either way. I personally carry the knipex raptor and gator from my own tool set and they have served me well but when I need to rip a rounded bolt or nut off I grab the 410. They're built beefy for crude work.

Designed in the 30s, never had anything to do with nuts or bolt heads specifically. The 1930s was a time when plenty of square head fasteners were still around, just gripping pliers as they were called in the old catalogs, they actually compare their grip to pipe a wrenches in the catalogs but says nothing about being a "Nut Buster". Obviously the name came about later because people found out their grip was great for that purpose. No one in their right mind uses Channellocks, Vise-Grips or a similar pliers with teeth that with ruin plating and burr up fasteners on non damaged nuts & bolts today.

I see those as being good for those nasty rusted fasteners that once you remove them they get thrown out and replaced. The teeth need to dig in because there isn't enough of the hex left for a socket to have a prayer of holding on to.

My Channellock Speed Grips are awesome. I use them to hold a 1.5 inch pipe still while I deburr, swage, or put nut or bolt on it. And I use them to hold a nut or a bolt while I fasten the other end...Grabbing plate for welding...etc...alot of purposes.. Everyone doesn't have a use for everything. But everything does have a use for someone...🤔 3:44.. right there!.. that's what they do.. And then you go in to trying to convince people that the Knipex "is far superior." when you set that nut down and it held them, that's what it's for... and if it doesn't hold, ADJUST THEM, they're adjustable, but they do it just as well as Knipex....or better 5:26..WHY WOULD YOU NEED MORE😂

The Channel Lock one looks designed for round pipes. Which raises the question - why not use a pipe wrench. In any case, it’s well known that Knipex has superior designs.

Think of it this way, whilst the Raptors look a good fit on a fresh nut they aren't a good fit on a rounded nut. It's the whole idea, the Channellock fits rounded nuts, if you want to move fresh nuts use a socket not a Raptor.

Raptors are frankly pretty crappy for nuts and bolts. I only use them on brass fittings, other soft metals, square fittings or parts with a finish that I don’t want to damage in low torque applications. They are absolutely terrible for trying to use in a tight space. If they fell out of my tool box, I doubt I would ever replace them. Pliers wrenches are far superior for anything the raptors can do.

I agree, they are excellent pliers! They were my go to stuck “nut/pipe/rod busters” until the Knipex came along. Since the 410’s can do some serious damage, these days I always try the Knipex first. When the Knipex can’t do it, the 410’s will! You just might not be able to reuse the part/fastener.

@@lastbesttool I work on small industrial Kubota diesel engines and the exhaust manifold studs on those heads are hard to get at with a normal stud puller socket. These pliers makes it easy and there isn’t much to go wrong with 2 pieces of hardened steel and a bolt compared to other tools for stud removal with gears or rollers in a socket.

I assume tools with teeth are meant for round items, pipes and rounded things. I use flat jaws for all items with flat sides. I see this channel lock as a crap pipe wrench.

It is actually superior to a pipe wrench when clamping power is needed. When the pipe wrench or Knipex pliers just shave metal off the perimeter, the 410’s will crush it, create an excellent purchase, and either turn the part or twist it in two.
