The Nanny: Iconic 90's Designer Style and Flair Moschino, Versace, Chanel, and More

Hello The Way We Wore Fans,
We are excited to present you with this fun episode detailing the styling and costume designs of the iconic 90s sitcom, The Nanny. Costume designer Brenda Cooper, along with Fran Drescher, made this eccentric nanny into a fashion icon, which has created a new generation of fans since it's premier in 1993. Designers featured during the show's run included: Todd Oldham, Herve Leger, Thierry Mugler, Versace, Chanel, Moschino, Valentino, Bob Mackie, and many more. The styling stands out because Cooper mixed mall style brands with luxury designers as well as back dating Fran's wardrobe to make it authentic to the character. The goal wasn't to create a fashionable character but a style that was specific to the personality and charm of Fran Fine.
In this episode we have the pleasure of Orchid Satellite sharing some iconic looks featured in the show. Orchid, who is a part of The Way We Wore team, but is also a well known stylist whose been styling many scenes with fun, colorful, dramatic looks that pop. Fran Drescher's wardrobe on The Nanny was one of my favorite wardrobes for any TV show. She had such a flair and carried each eccentric piece as if it were a simple piece of clothing vs this phenomenal piece of wearable art. LOVE this series of spotlighting TV characters. ❤️

Fran Fine, was and still continues to be my style icon. I used to watch the Nanny, strictly to see what type of fabulous ensemble she would be wearing. As a teenager, I found her to be such a breath of fresh fashion air...she always reminded me of a more modern version of my grandmothers' and great aunties', who wore either ALL black, ALL color, metallics, sequins, prints...or nothing at ALL! 💅🏻

Wonderful video as always, Doris! Something else that I think was great about the costume design of 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘕𝘢𝘯𝘯𝘺 is the clothing and accessory choices of Fran Drescher’s main antagonist on the show C.C. Babcock.. C.C.’s aesthetic was a very specific kind of ‘90s style, a luxe but understated or even minimalist urban professional with WASPy influences typified by trendsetting boutiques of the era such as Charivari and featuring designers such as Helmut Lang, Issey Miyake, Jil Sander, Calvin Klein, Armani, Prada, Perry Ellis and Margiela. Always in tasteful, muted shades of black, grey, charcoal, navy, white, ecru, beige, camel, coffee, C.C.’s style served as the perfect counterpoint to Fran’s riotously colorful, eccentric and whimsical fashion. Yes, there’s the line in the show’s theme song that goes “she’s the lady in red when everybody else is wearing tan”, but that doesn’t mean that one of those people in tan like C.C. wasn’t dressed just as impeccably as Fran was.

So funny ! I was singing the theme of The Nanny... yesterday ! I swear! The Nanny was the first show I saw on tv, I was so little but NEVER FORGET HER OR THE CHARACTER.
