The Mexican wine industry is simultaneously the birthplace of North American and South American wine and its newest frontier. The origins of Mexico's wine industry go back to 1521 and the Spanish conquest of the Aztec empire. Lorenzo Garcia founded Casa Madero, the first Mexican winery, in Santa Maria de las Parras in Coahuila in 1597. It is today one of Mexico's largest wine producers and the oldest winery in the Americas. Ironically, vines from the Parras Valley were later exported to California's Napa Valley, as well as to Chile and Argentina

I was in Valle de Guadalupe last weekend. I'm Mexican who lives in Los Angeles and I truly enjoy drinking wine. First time visiting Valle de Guadalupe thanks to your video about it. For some reason I didn't find the "Relieve" winery not even in a pamphlet map I got on the visitors kiosk. We really enjoyed this trip. We are looking forward to to back another time when the vines turn green or to see grapes. Thanks a lot Goyo y la linda güerita.

What a great video. I really loved this one! Mexico/Baja/New Spain/etc. was prohibited (by Spain) from producing wine and they tried to force the Americas to import wine only from Spain ( ... "In 1699, Charles II of Spain prohibited wine making in Mexico, with the exception of wine for Church purposes.[1] From then until Mexico’s Independence, wine was produced in Mexico only on a small scale." ). Hence, Mexico's very slow development of both production and appreciation/popularity of wine. Wine in any restaurant was almost completely unavailable 20 years ago. Thankfully that is no longer true!

Did you knew that the first winery in the new world including US and Canada is in Mexico Casa Madero founded in 1597 in Parras de la Fuente Coahuila. The main reason the Mexican wine is not very popular was that in times of Spanish empire the colonies were not allowed to compete with the wine produced in Spain the only way casa Madero was able to produce wine it was used by the Catholic Church in the mass.
@planetquarry5 жыл бұрын
No,I did not know that. Very interesting!

Not being sarcastic at all, BUT, wine was used in the first mass by Our Lord Jesus Christ in the year 33A.D. and is still and WILL be used till the end of times. At one time there were many Russian families living in el Valle. These were White Russians who fled Soviet Red Russia after the revolution. Many of them lived in the Valle area, and were involved in the wine production. In Ensenada the water is cold, not like La Paz or Mazatlan, so be prepared. If you can go to La Bufadora in Ensenada. It is a fun day trip. Also, there is a fish taco stand on the Blvd that is world famous. Even Anthony Bourdain ate there as well as many movie stars, tv stars etc. It is called, La Guerrerense, and is on Blvd Lopez Mateos. An easy Yelp will give u the location. It is always busy and has the best street fish tacos in Ensenada. Rosarito, and Puerto Nuevo are also great places to eat. Be prepared to see the largest lines at the San Ysidro border crossing station you have seen in your life. It is the most crossed border in the world so I am told. Have fun in Baja. P.S. If you want to see crazy gringos drinking, go to Hussong's Cantina, and Papas and Beers.

One of the historical reasons why wine is not deep into mexican culture is because Spain had the control of the production when Mexico was New Spain. So the inhabitants were not allowed to produce wine it was forbidden by the spanish authorities. After the Independence, Mexico fell down into a severe crisis because of internal wars and invasion from U.S. and France so the wine industry never had the chance to grow. Porfirio Diaz began the culturalization of wine but only in the high mexican class. Then the revolution of 1910 stopped again thuis industry. After a century it finally started to consolidate within and outside mexico; meaning that mexican wine is know known at least in certain circles in Europe where the mexican wine has gained lot of awards, very rare in South America and little in U.S. Globalization and this period of relative peace in the country had contribute to this industry to finally grow and be known by mexicans and foreigners. Zacatecas is another state where you can find nice "viñedos" Thanks for promoting my beautiful Mexico.

Right after the conquer the Spanish brought vines and started producing wine. The wineries in Mexico got so good that the industry in Spain saw there could be a commercial conflict. The Spanish king then ordered to burn the vineyards in New Spain... that is why we ended up not developing a big wine culture until recently. Most of the national production is for international markets.

Yes, a fascinating up and coming wine region in the world of wine . VG vinos have become more accessible and are starting to develop an market presence in San Diego and beyond , but still lack a strong market share considering the Craft Brew Dominance that has permeated nationally at about 45 % . Unfortunately wine consumption is down about 25% nationally as well , so this impacts not only the US producers , but all the importer wholesalers as well like Mexico 🇲🇽 too ! However , Spain Italy and France,have seemed to garner a strong hold market share with the US markets like California, Nevada , New York ! The VG is really doing some interesting European varietals and creating some dynamic blends , so much that the Aussies to note and implemented the same approach . It incredible to see how the Mexicans are exploring and experimenting with not only different varietals, but how their soil composition effects each wines outcome and they evolve as wine makers and what we can experience in the glass is exciting! Viva Mexico Vinos!
