A proclamation issued by the then State President, Nelson Mandela, on 20 April 1994 in terms of the provisions of Section 248 (1) together with Section 2 of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1993 (Act 200 of 1993), stated that the Republic of South Africa would have two national anthems. They were Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika and The Call of South Africa (Die Stem van Suid-Afrika).
The lyrics employ the five most populous of South Africa's eleven official languages - isiXhosa (first stanza, first two lines), isiZulu (first stanza, last two lines), seSotho (second stanza), Afrikaans (third stanza) and English (final stanza).
Nkosi Sekelel' iAfrika was composed in 1897 by Enoch Sontonga, a Methodist school teacher. It was originally sung as a church hymn but later became an act of political defiance against the apartheid Government. Die Stem van Suid-Afrika/The Call of South Africa was written by C.J. Langenhoven in 1918. "Die Stem" was the co-national anthem with God Save the King/Queen from 1936 to 1957, when it became the sole national anthem until 1994. The South African Government under Nelson Mandela adopted both songs as national anthems from 1994 until they were merged in 1997 to form the current anthem.

@dorothy dustbin yea most Brits keep saying stuff like the camps where only temporary and the people could always buy their way out and go back home (the British burned their homes down but looted them first) and so after 27 thousand Boers and 30 native allies dead in the camps the British packed their bags and left and our young boys who lived through the camps would go on to fight for the britsh in the first world war some 12 years later

As a person from the United States, I liked this song since I was a teenager. This song is an inspiration to not only South Africa but also to everyone in the world and I will say it is one of the best songs written for this county. During the days when South Africa was still under the racist apartheid regime, I still hear those who were protesting against their evil government at that time singing it. I AM GLAD THIS SONG IS AN ANTHEM FOR SOUTH AFRICA!!

Love and admiration from Israel as well! South Africa is beautiful a shining light in so many ways, radiating with love between its people. Rarely does an anthem inspire such fervor and emotion like Hatikva ("The Hope"). but Nkosi Sikelel Afrika is definitely similar. Just incredible to hear the hope and love in this song, obviously felt in the hearts of all who sing it. Praying for the day when all wars end and songs like this can be shared in conditions of true and lasting peace.

The best I’ve heard the South African anthem sung was in the 1995 final against New Zealand. Nelson Mandela had come out wearing the Springbok jersey which was obviously a huge historical moment and the anthems were sung by a female choir wearing (what looked like to me) traditional African dress with the pattern of the new South African flag. The anthem was slightly different to today it didn’t have English in it for a start but watching the South Africans you could see what a day it was for them. Francois Pienaar the captain said in an interview several years later he couldn’t move his mouth to sing the anthem as he was so close to crying after seeing Mandela wearing his number 6 and James Small had tears in his eyes too. Ironically the same choir then went on to sing the New Zealand anthem better than I’ve ever heard it sung as well. It’s one of those days you know they’ll still be talking about in 100years time. As an Englishman and rugby fan I love the SA anthem.

This is probably the most captivating Anthem ever composed. Makes you want to shade tears. It sounds like a Church song 🎵 the most beautiful followed by the Russian one

SA national anthem will always be my favorite. Ifeel it in my soul every time. My parents also grew up singing ‘nkosi sikeleli Africa’ in boarding school in Nigeria when they were young, as did other ‘boomers’ across Africa that time so I’ve heard. It speaks so beautifully to us all. Shout out to SA❤️❤️

What a glorious sight: Black and white South Africans standing shoulder to shoulder singing together, with great joy, their National Anthem! The country still has its problems, but no country is perfect. But thanks to the leadership of the late Nelson Mandela, a man who had every reason to hate, but who chose love instead, South Africa is light years away from where it was and I believe it can look forward to an even better future!

Antonis and what “rat” group do you belong to? I’m an absolute mutt with my heritage ... so I guess a rat X 4 European nationalities (Irish (Dublin), Dutch, English and Welsh) - kind of a lot of historical turmoil between that ... but shit I’ll take it! I’m alive - and wait for it - I was born and raised in South Africa ... so an absolute mutt! My Catholic grandmother (Irish) and pure bread English grandmother couldn’t sit down at sane table together ... my Dutch grandfather couldn’t sit at the table with anyone as far as I remember (but improved BIG time when his great grand kids were born, not his grand kids). Hey - this world is a crazy and fun place! I’m proud to be a mutt or a rat or whatever you feel need to point fingers at! But certainly, you’re just an asshole with that comment. Try again ... but not disrespecting my “born in” country’s anthem doing so
