As someone at the grand-children age, I really want to point out they were making the same stupid the debt is too big and disaster is imminent advertisements when I was a small child 60 years ago. Oliver could have also pointed out that coming out the second world war, the UK's national debt was twice it's GDP. Of course it's debt never went down, just as ours hasn't, instead the GDP grew with growth and inflation and that huge debt became something not worth worrying about - the same joke Mike Myers made with Dr Evil demanding 100 billion dollars in 2010 and getting yawns.

It's not accurate to american slavery but that was exactly what happened with slaves that pre-dated african expansion like the roman's for example.
