lmfao was not the central event and was not the turning point of the war at all. just Yankee misinformation and propaganda. Guadal was tiny compared to New Guinea campaign and this battle did not save Australia like yanks love to lie about either.. Turning point was Aussies at Milne Bay who stopped the Japanese advancing first time ever in WW2 that no other nation had done....

@@nedkelly9688 Guadalcanal forced the IJN to lose valuable ships; the IJA to lose a log of aircraft and pilots. Bluntly speaking did a lot more damage to Japan then the New Guniea campaign. Simple truth.

Agree that the campaign was the central pivot of the Pacific war, but I'd define it more broadly by taking the Japanese perspective. From their perspective at Rabaul, the campaign was a two-headed struggle with the Americans on Guadalcanal and the Australians on New Guinea. The attrition was fatal: the Allies could replace losses and the Japanese could not.

Now New Guinea was the turning point of the war as saved Australia and had more Japanese here then Guadal or Solomons or even Iowa Jima. and Aussies at Milne Bay were the first to stop Japanese advancing and this was the turning point giving allies the confidence that they could be stopped.

Excellent compilation. The Guadalcanal campaign was a turning point but came at quite the cost in the grinding jungle combat. I could be wrong, but I believe this was the first major Pacific War campaign where a significant number of Japanese troops were taken prisoner.

Slightly wrong. Approximately 31,000 Japanese soldiers and sailors served on Guadalcanal. Of that number 20,000 were left by December with 12,000 fit for duty. Over 14,000 were killed and 9000 dieing from disease or hunger with 1000 captured. If you reckon 1000 out of 31,000 "significant" then you are correct. It should be noted that all those prisoners were wounded or otherwise incapacitated.

That's a function of it being the first campaign the Japanese lost-it's kind of hard to take any prisoners when your forces are getting their teeth kicked in and losing every battle and surrendering.

@@picklerick8785 Wrong again. It was not the first time they had lost. That was on New Guinea thanks primarily to the Australians. It was only the first campaign won in its entirety because the PNG campaign went on for the entire war, as compared to Guadalcanal, PNG is MUCH, MUCH larger and the Allies had to winkle them out of every bolt hole. By the time of Guadalcanal however the Japanese were never again a threat on PNG. Guadalcanal is the first ground victory against the Japanese to the Americans, and only the Americans, as it *was* the first ground victory that involved primarily US forces. As a result the US historiography tends to ignore PNG as if it never happened....

Just as a quick note, there was no miracle about the US Torpedo not exploding when it hit a friendly ship. This was *before* the debacle that was the US torpedo situation was resolved, most of them did not explode. The family of torpedoes in service in the USN at the time of Guadalcanal were, quite frankly, garbage, and it took Admiral King finally losing his rag with BuOrd for them to *finally* admit that perhaps there might be a problem.... That was 18 months *after* the US entered the war. The US Submarine service was essentially more or less crippled for the first year because BuOrd refused outright to admit there was an issue, and only some unofficial testing (BuOrd had never actually bothered testing their revolutionary new torpedo) and jury rigged work arounds got them somewhat reliable... The utter slaughter of the Japanese Merchant fleet by said submarines would likely have occurred more than a year earlier than it did historically if BuOrd had been bothered to get its head unstuck from its rectum, and that may well have saved US and Allied lives.

The USS Helena CL-50 -"The Machine Gun Cruiser", as hailed by the Japanese, they thought these Brooklyn Class Light Cruisers had some kind of New Rapid Firing 6 inch Gun (It kind of did, older guns with a new purpose). Reality, 10,000 Tons, 100,000 HP, w/ 15 fast firing 6 inch Rifles it literally was a War Wagon with Cannon Caliber Machine Guns. I'm Very Proud to be an American

That's the trend for the majority of the US' wars. Unfortunately, that causes a lot of the allied contribution to historically be overlooked in the united states, but the US rarely fights alone

Unfortunately the japanese wiped out the Dutch forces early in the campaign and Britain was obviously far too preoccupied in Europe and Africa. So sadly, it was basically just australia and other small pacific island countries fighting with us in this one

@@cameronspence4977 Australia did the bulk of the ground fighting in South Pacific lil one. USA yes navy and even airforce Australia was up there. Guadal Canal only had 30,000 Japanese while Papua New Guinea nearly all Australian troops had 200,000 Japanese and barely any USA fought here except US 51ST and USA 32nd Divisions. Why Australian General Blamey was allied ground forces commander as only he could order the Aussie troops around. MacArthur had 10 mix matched Divisions of Australians and only 2 US Divisins under his command in South Pacific.. Bougainville US troops left 40- 60,000 Japanese to live freely there unless they attacked the USA ao and only defended, was not until Aussies took over as USA geared up to take Japanese islands did they find out and go hunt them all down.. USA was lazy in this part of the war. Then Australia special z unit performed over 1000 missions in Pacific and Asia.. was no American special forces who did anything as daring as they did..,,

This was the graduate school for the USN in warfare. USN thought they knew how to conduct a war. IJN taught them otherwise. Hats off to the USN. It is ok to make mistakes. The real sin is to not learn and continue making them.

@@HoH Thanks. I'm reading Victor Davis Hanson's book, "The Second World Wars", (excellent book) and he references it but doesn't go into detail. It's odd that the Soviets beat the Japanese quiet soundly in '39 yet preformed terribly against the Finns and the Germans in the early stages. As you know, the Japanese army had issues but being a bad army is not one of them.

My grandfather was there. He was a USN Seabee running an open cab bulldozer, grading Henderson Field for the scrappy "Cactus Air Force". The island was not yet secure- he had a twelve gauge sawed off shotgun aboard and had to use it. 😐 He didn't like to talk about it much, said it was Hell. He eventually contracted malaria and was rotated out. He was never well afterwards. We truly stand on the shoulders of giants. ⚓

Aussies in Papua had to keep fighting while had dissentry and malaria. did Milne Bay and Kokoda and every other battle with 88=98% soldiers suffering malaria and dissentry This is bs how Guadal was turning point or most pivotol in this war also.. Australia defeated Japanese at Milne Bay months before Gudal and was first stopping of Japanese advancing in WW2.. no other country had before them/ Australia had defeated Jpaanese in over 4 battles in Papua before Guadal was ended.. and Papua is 90 kilometres from Australia thus saving Australia and not Gudal Canal 2000 kilometers away. American misinformation and propaganda is rediculous in wars..

Most of the setbacks resulted from a deadly. combination of inexperience, poor intelligence, and overconfidence. Stupidity (eg, Savo Island, Tassafaronga) didn't help.

The efficacy of torpedoes was strikingly different, the US torpedoes were gravely inadequate in their manufacturing quality and or employment doctrine. The us sailors were saved by their courage not by equipment or leadership many times.
