The 375 H&H is a favorite of mine. Not because I shoot the caliber but without it we would not have one of my favorite cartridges the 300 Winchester Magnum. Same as the 416 Rigby. That cartridge gave us the starting point for the 338 Lapua Magnum.

Been carrying a 375 H&H for years. Great caliber and very effective on any game. Another one that is very, very good is the 9.3x62. Been shooting the 9.3 for about 15 years. I would not hesitate to use either on any legally hunted game anywhere in the world.

In Alaska during the 70's the 338 win. mag was probably the most popular cartridge, mainly because of bears, but it's pretty uncomfortable to shot. Once a 338 shooter pulls the trigger on a 375 H&H, he'll never go back to the 338. When I left Alaska in the early 2000's the most popular rifle carried by the guides was the Win. model 70 pre 64 design in 375 H&H.

@@teratexture6529 The 338 Win Mag is a necked down 375 case. The winmag is slightly shorter, but retains 90% of the 375's case capacity. There's very little difference in terminal effectiveness. Even if the 375's extra capacity delivers slightly more muzzle energy, the .338's better bullets, carry energy more efficiently, and so the terminal effect will be very similar inside 100 yards, with the .338 being SIGNIFICANTLY more effective at distances beyond that.

I don’t need a safari rifle but I’d love a 223 or 243 rifle that looks just like that. Very interesting tidbit about the sling and carry method. I always thought it looked odd to see pics and videos of hunters carrying a rifle that way, now I get it.

He is so right on when he says that recoil anticipation is the main reason for inaccuracy. I fight it all the time. One of my instructors when I was qualifying with the M14 (a military version of a .308) and he had me pulling the trigger unloaded. You should learn to squeeze the trigger like it's always empty. Hold it on target, pull the trigger and do not try to anticipate the recoil. I know that sounds overly simplified, and it is, but when that trigger breaks, where ever that barrel is pointed at that time is where your bullet is going to impact. Once you've mastered that, the rest is easy.

Really good, thanks. I have a .375 that weighs the same as the one in the vid. I don't honestly even notice the recoil, sighting it in off shooting sticks nor in the field here, where tough elk are hunted and a big grizzly can show up pretty much anytime and increasing almost anywhere. Really enjoy the confidence carrying a .375 imparts. All my other hunting rifles leave question marks in the mind. Not this one.

My Ruger Tropical in .375 is slinged and scoped. I never found the sling one bit obtrusive and could come to bear in a heartbeat. I oft would shoot full loads at practice with 40 rounds. Some don’t like it’s recoil but I found it completely tolerable 300 grain bullets with IMR 4064 driving at upper pressure range. Rounds held in between my fingers would have non believers of single shot rifles learning how rapidly repeat fire can be done. It’s all in knowing your rifle and learning to shoot. It’s hard Sierra 300 antimony spitzer boat tails proving decimating to game and mushrooming well in tough bone with high weight retention. Low drag and high ballistic flight reliability shot after shot. It’s 50 mm objective lens Leupold vari-x II 3x9 scope rock solid reliability in over 40 years of all weather temperature extremes.

I would say to drop "Safari" from the title and just call it the nearly perfect cartridge. I had wanted a 375 H&H since I was a kid. I finally got one, and once I had it, I decided to use it. At first I thought it was going to be a little overkill for the whitetail, black bear, and feral hogs I hunt every year, but figured I would be a great way to get familiar with the rifle, a CZ 550 Safari Mag, for when I get to hunt bigger critters. That's when I discovered that a 300gr soft point from a 375 H&H kills just as well as the more common cartridges, but ruins less meat then even a 308 win, and a lot less than the small magnums like 300 and 7mm. I've even shot coyotes with it,

Just as Holland and Holland intended when they came up with it in 1912! On my one and only Safari- I took a 7mm RM the only rifle I had at the time and the PH have me shoot one of his 375 H+H's when I needed more gun!! These days a 375 is plenty for most chores you would use one for! You still have to be able to hit things , and Recoil dose become a problem- my shooting is best with that cartridge or smaller, I do a passable job with a 416 Remington or Rigby but I notice the recoil and after a dozen shots I am done for several days! For the traveling visiting sport hunter whom one or maybe two safaris will be done in a life time- a 375 is a very very good choice! And anybody can go with some planning and willingness to give up some things to do so!

I hear what you are saying about the Rigby or Remington. But they weren't intended to be plinking rounds. Sight them in. Practice just enough to be proficient. Don't overdue it. If 4 shots is your limit at a time--STOP. Don't go beyond what your body can take.
@GeorgeSemel

@@Nick-wn1xw I should have been more clear, it took 12 shots to get my 416 Remington sighted in where I wanted, and a proof group. I shoot four good shots at a time off sticks, and it's very manageable. I had no problem with a Buffalo in 2018. I had 40 rounds of 400 SP and 20 Rounds of solids, Shot one sigher, and two more softs on the Buffalo, one was the insurance shot. I shot my 338 a bit more. I would like to do another trip, the current inflation is making it tough. I have come to really like the 416 Remington Cartridge. Thou loading components and loaded ammo is somewhat hard to find these days. I don't shoot as much as I did in general.

That's the point of this rifle! my custom R700 chambered in 416rem-mag is a 10k rifle, before the 3k in optics/QD mount. And that is the cheap end of "safari" rifles. So this man built you an extremely affordable rifle you can take anywhere things get dangerous, and beat the hell out of it along the way, without ruining a heirloom piece. I'll take 2 please...
@patrickc1508
@patrickc1508 3 жыл бұрын
It’s okay for him. If he scratched, scuffed, or buggered it up in any way, he’d have it looking like new in a week or two after he got home. Strip the finish off the stock. Steam the dents. Sand out the scratches. Refinish the wood. Touch up the checkering. Strip the blue from the metal. Polish it with sand paper. Rust blue it. The man’s attention to detail and his craftsmanship is second to none. He has a beautiful rifle, that he really doesn’t have a lot of money in. It is his time and effort that make it so great. The beauty of it is in that 90% of what he did with that rifle, the average garage/basement diy gunsmith could do with a little practice. Just have a professional gunsmiths with a lathe true the action, chamber, and install the barrel. The rest is just practicing a little with things like checkering, time, patience, and attention to detail. If you take the lathe and mill out of the equation by having that done, it’s all hand tools and a lot of craftsmanship with affordable hand tools. Even his cabinet that he rust blues in isn’t more than a plywood box with a light bulb and a pan of water. You could boil your rusted parts in a piece of gutter on a turkey fryer in your garage or driveway. The only real specialized tools are the stock finishing tools for checkering and the barrel channel.

I was reading a book called " kambaku " by professional Ivory Hunter , Harry Manners. He used to use a Winchester Model 70 in .375 H&H Magnum for all his hunts. I found one page of the book interesting ... Harry mentions that the old ICI Kynoch .375 loads from the 1940s had more driving power than the modern loads . In one chapter , he mentions using one shot to bring down two elephant. He goes on to say that shortly afterwards , Kynoch reduced the powder charge in the .375 loads and that they no longer had the souped up driving power. Was he right in his observations ? Did Kynoch really reduce the powder charge in the .375s ?
@calska140
@calska140 4 жыл бұрын
if he was right; that probably means they reduced the powder charge because more precise measuring methods revealed it was too close to overpressure. old powder loads are scarily inconsistent from cartridge to cartridge.

For all the reasons listed, another excellent (and probably BETTER choice) cartridge is the 9.3x62. It can, and HAS, done everything a 375 can do. It does it's job in a lighter rifle with less recoil. Ammo availability is not really a problem in Africa. The cartridge has a very storied past and is well thought of by PH's. The only issue is that it's not popular in the US. Why ? I don't know. Maybe because it's metric, but John "Pondoro" Taylor and Finn Aagard thought well of it.

I agree. The .375 H&H is the nearly perfect Safari cartridge. I have an awesome .375 H&H by Remington. It's a BDL Safari Grade that I acquired about 35 years ago. If I do go to Africa for hunting, it's staying home. The .375 H&H is often the legal minimum for dangerous game in Africa. Why go with the least powerful cartridge if you're going after Cape buffalo, aptly named, "Black Death"? And the .375 H&H is serious overkill for nearly all plains game. Would you use one to hunt mule deer? A lot of plains game is no bigger than a mulie. I know a lot of hunters going to Africa want to bring only one rifle. Convenient, yes but hardly the only option. I'd rather have serious stopping power for cape buffalo in the form of a .416 Rigby. a .458 Win Mag or even a .458 Lott. (After winning the lottery, I'd get a classic sidelock double rifle in .470 Nitro Express... and practice extensively.) For plains game I'd take the advice of no less an expert than Craig Boddington and go with the rifle you likely already have for most north American big game. That could be a .270 Win. a .308, Craig's recommendation of the .30-06 or one of the .300 magnums. I have a .300 Win Mag I've used extensively. That would be my choice. If it cleanly takes the biggest of Yukon moose, it will handle even an eland. They can go 2,000 lb. but a 180 gr Partition through the boiler room and it's going down. Two rifles in one larger, lockable hard gun case is no big deal. For a hunt in Africa that includes both cape buffalo and plains game, to me it's the logical choice.

A lot calibers people say all sudden you can't use in Africa I do t agree with. I think a 7 mm would work great in Africa. The 30 06 people use to use in Africa on cape buffalo all the time. The 300 Winchester Magnum has been used on bison just as big and in Australia on water buffualo . All the calibers I have mentioned are adequate. I don't get how people think a bow or arrow is better in Africa all sudden then either 3 caliber I mentioned.

There's a new gun out there, for close range Safari hunting.. the Big Horn Armory Model 89, firing the 500 S&W Magnum.. with a maximum pressure load they are hitting 4500 ft lbs energy, and with commonly loaded rounds they are between 3600 and 4000 ft lbs energy. Now you have 8 rounds that you can fire as fast as you can work the lever (if you have a cartridge in the chamber) where with a rifle like in the video you have 4, 1 in the chamber and 3 in the magazine... (yes I have a couple Safari rifles like in the video, Remington 700 firing 375 Ultra Mag and yes they have quite a bit more energy than the 375 H&H or 500 S&W Mag fired from a rifle)..

Approx $12,000 for a mixed bag plains game hunt, 10 animals 10 days at a nice lodge all meals, beer, wine, and laundry service included. That was for 1 hunter and one non-hunting spouse. The airfare actually cost us more than the hunt. I would budget an extra $3k for taxidermy as it is a "once in a lifetime" experience. BTW, that was 2014 prices. It may be more now. What has more recoil a 12 gague 9 pellet two and three quarter inch,3 inch mag or the 370 or whatever cartridge he's talking about and by how much?
@ScuffedEngineer
@ScuffedEngineer 9 жыл бұрын
+Krs22 523 12g 2 3/4 with 1.5oz of shot going 1260fps from a 7.5lb shotgun generates 45.9 ftlbs of energy in recoil and a 3" with 1 7/8oz shot of shot going 1210fps from a 7.5lb shotgun will generate over 60ftlbs of recoil. A 9lb rifle in .375H&H with 235gr at 2700fps will get 29.5ftlbs, a 270gr at 2690 will gen 36.1ftlbs and 300gr at 2530 will gen 37.3ftlbs of recoil.

I would think that 7.62x39 would be the most common cartridge across Africa. Maybe not for hunting, but most common.
@jic1
@jic1 3 жыл бұрын
Like pretty much everywhere else, I suspect the real answer is .22 LR. And, as far as military cartridges go, I've seen a lot of pictures of troops from various African nations with FALs, which are almost always chambered in 7.62x51. However, given the context, he almost definitely meant 'most common dangerous game cartridge'.

I hesitate to use the term, but what about a "tactical" style two point sling? While less aesthetically pleasing than a good leather unit, this could support the gun and make it quick to bring to bear without being Clunky.

There's no such thing as one calibre to shoot all the African game. This is why Peter Hofer engineered his 4 bore calibre. It fires 2000 grain bullets. It's a calibre for hunting elephants, for hunting big tuskers.

@zzp1
@zzp1 10 жыл бұрын
A 4 bore is by far too heavy. Not realistic. There not many coys that produce a double barrel in African calibers. Unless you are willing to spend a six figure amount of $$ (Purdey, Rigby, H&H). Anyone capable to fund a Safari, will be able to buy a double barrel - which should be enough for the day.
