Billy Graham How would you feel if one of your friends was executed on the basis of false charges? Would you make a replica of the instrument of execution? Would you cherish it, or would you rather shun it? In ancient Israel, unfaithful Jews wept over the death of the false god Tammuz. Jehovah spoke of what they were doing as being a 'detestable thing.' (Ezek. 8:13, 14) According to history, Tammuz was a Babylonian god, and the cross was used as his symbol. From its beginning in the days of Nimrod, Babylon was against Jehovah and an enemy of true worship. (Gen. 10:8-10; Jer. 50:29) So by cherishing the cross, a person is honoring a symbol of worship that is opposed to the true God. As stated at Ezekiel 8:17, apostate Jews also 'thrust out the shoot to Jehovah's nose.' He viewed this as "detestable" and 'offensive.' Why? This "shoot," some commentators explain, was a representation of the male sex organ, used in phallic worship. How, then, must Jehovah view the use of the cross, which, as we have seen, was anciently used as a symbol in phallic worship?

Billy Graham repeated what Paul said in Galatians. The depth of the "reason" Paul was thankful for 5he cross. It is the burden of sin Jesus died on the cross with the burden of our sins. I think Paul was grateful that God "was pleased" he did that to his son Jesus. So it's not the cross but the sacrifice that is significant. In other crusades he talks of the horror of the cross....saying," the worst way to die immaginable". Point : Jesus death on the cross was necessary for the forgiveness of our sins. Paul understood that and was grateful. We have a way to escape damnation now. Believe trust make Jesus the lord of your life. Repent and call out to Jesus. He will change you. The world won't do it..no other Gods exist. Further, he arose from the dead..so he overcame death. The greatest enemy of man was overcome. No sting in death anymore if you have faith in the one true God. Yes the cross is offensive but it is also the offense that brings us the glory of salvation from our sins. God proved his love for us that way. We can offer no less then our souls...our very lives eternally depend on this. "For by grace are you saved through faith". Hope this sheds some light on the use of "cross" and Paul's admiration and Billy Grahams sermon. God Bless.
