Sadly back in the day I missed a game on the PS1 that had absolutely amazing cockpit views called Jarret & Labonte Stock Car Racing. It came out in 2000. I found out about it around last year and picked it up. I am blown away by the amount of detail inside the car and how great the racing is. Definitely worth a look if you love cockpit views. BTW it says "stock car" but it's not NASCAR racing. It's has right turns too lol.

Don't forget the Warrior car too! Even if this game were remade today it wouldn't sell. Too much evolution has happened in racing games since then. All that really needs to happen today is for EA to stop making NFS games suck. I don't think EA knows how to do that. It's amazing how much of a downturn the series took after the FIRST Most Wanted and Carbon. After playing Hot Pursuit 2010 I was done.

[ NTSC-U : ] This and ToCA2 / Touring Car Challenge ( in specific modes / races for ToCA2 ) have my favorite driver's view points for different reasons. ( hm, both of them also serial link together two equipped PS1 consoles as well ) Need For Speed has great vehicle-specific dash details whereas Touring Car Challenge / ToCA2 has rudimentary dash graphics but adds the side mirror, the cracking + breaking + missing windshield, blown back / hyperextended hood as well as the driver's gloved hands seen steering the wheel while also handling the shifting by dropping a hand out of frame at gear changes. Not that its absence detracts, but either view would've been welcome in V-Rally 2 as well but that title may compensate with an in-game infinitely adjustable third person camera angle and distance along with a track creator and 4-player splitscreen. These are truly golden propositions with still buy-in capable and engaging graphics, detail and social local multiplayer value.

Well this game's claim to fame was it's cockpit view. Cockpit views got dumped from most racing games at that time while PC racing games seemingly always had them. I always wished for them back then but just got used to the bumper cam. Nowadays just about every console racing game has a cockpit view. It sucks because NFS got me hooked on the cockpit view and left me wanting for two generations and now just about every racing game has it now, but I don't even care anymore. Ironic isn't it?

To be fair the Playstation port was the worst looking out of all the ports. Even when I first booted it up back when it came out I was taken back by the visual hit that the game had taken from its 3DO original release. It was never good looking on the Playstation, but it was a ton faster and smoother than the 3DO original and so I sort of took the good with the bad. The second edition PC port aged way better than all of them. Still runs extremely well under DOSBox too.

@GILakaGP3 That's a really good question, and the answer is no. Reason being is that this game came out prior to the release of the dual analog controller and only supports digital controls. The DF EX can be used on any game that can use analog controls. Games like Gran Turismo, Destruction Derby 2, Ridge Racer 4, Rally Cross, and Collin Mcrae. Not games like Ridge Racer, Ridge Racer Revolution, or Rage Racer or the first Destruction Derby.

When it comes to features from NFS on PS1 , why has nobody ever covered the console link experience - aka "Link Mode" - to describe gameplay aspects such as AI cars and other aspects when connecting two PS1 consoles using each to render a full screen perspective of each driver's point of view? [ from an NTSC-U / C perspective ] Aside from that, the acoustic placement of vehicles outside of one's view and enveloping sound when experiencing tunnels was a grand step in immersion value. Does no one have at least a 5.1 surround system anymore to enjoy and comment on the psycho-acoustic engineering efforts from Dolby Surround and Q Sound ?
@OldsXCool7 жыл бұрын
Well I used to have the link cable back in the day and never had much of an opportunity to use it as you needed two consoles, two TVs, and two games all in the same room which was kinda hard to facilitate even for being a 17 year old. I didn't have that kind of money. I did later get to try it when i got a hold of a pirated copy of Doom and played it via link with my brother which was pretty fun, but that's the only time I ever used the Playstation's link cable. It was pretty much a useless gimmick unless your parents were made of money. When it comes to sound, all of my consoles are hooked to a 5.1 surround setup and I completely agree that sound is extremely important to overall immersion in a game. I usually only make remarks about the sound when I feel that the sound is truly remarkable. Granted the PS1 version of Need For Speed definitely has the best sound out of any of the other ports and the tunnels do sound really good, but that's really it. In my video for Black on XBOX I do rave about the unparalleled sound quality and 5.1 separation because it really is fantastic. When it comes to racing games I find it hard to beat Need For Speed Underground 2 for PS2 and XBOX. Even when you're not going under overpasses or through tunnels the game just sounds amazing. However back to your question if people even have surround sound systems anymore. The answer is not really. Those damn sound bars are all the rage now. People could be listening to things in mono and never even realize it. Sound as a whole has really taken a back seat these days which is stupid since video games are more able than ever to deliver theater quality sound staging and most gamers use crappy headphones. So many people would just graze over me fawning over sound quality in my descriptions.
@That_Handle7 жыл бұрын
OldsXCool , Restrospective apologies for presenting a frustrated-sounding query in an attempt to underscore and present an opportunity regarding the link cable and, applicably, the Need For Speed coverage here. More of a curiosity of retro reviewing regarding 'why not' coverage instead of ascertainig contemporaneous steep costs of entry which were quite high for its time. I've seen other videos sampling other titles in link mode but not a review yet of NFS link mode. No negative critique placed upon your video here. ( 'thumbs up' for it ) Instead, your video and comments were inspiration to field a question I felt from the depth shown here - Much appreciated and good vid!
@That_Handle7 жыл бұрын
Agreed - the soundbars convenience has choked experiences down and normalized a terrible acoustic compromise albeit to afford space savings and simplicity of setup for buyers as was the intention of what were mostly undersized 5.1 home theaters in a box.
@That_Handle7 жыл бұрын
OldsXCool , For those interested: PS1 serial / link mode titles are typically reasonably priced but are increasing. Depending on one's forecasted investment in linking titles, or simply an interest in portability of hundreds of PS1 titles played on original console hardware, a PSIO SD card reader(s) ( for use in parallel port equipped PS1s ) might afford a break-even opportunity via savings from eliminating the redundant, second copy of each linkable title ( if you are versed in the steps required to pull files from your player 1 disc for placement upon the player 2 SD card reader ) and even further savings from lack of wear and tear on the laser drive and pursuant inevitable replacement / repair. Acquiring a PSIO for each unit might be justified depending on the number of titles of interest and savings across their 2nd copies - the 1st copy acquisition costs add up quickly. A few titles supply both discs in a single purchase - both of which are required as each disc is specific, not a duplicate - such as ' C&C-Red Alert ' and its sequel ' - Red Alert Retaliation '. The PSIO device not only retains serial link mode, it loads / accesses any PS1 game via SD card faster than any of the CD media discs being read by any laser drive since the communication between the PS1 mainboard and parallel port is much faster than the pathway of the laser drive. Loading screen times are shorter which can greatly benefit titles not only with long duration loads but also those with large load time accrual and tediousness in numerous loads of even short duration. Comparisons are on KZbin and the product may also enable translation patches and play other regions' games but I could be recollecting a different device. Acquisition cost has been quite reasonable. My pair of older PS1 consoles ( equipped with serial ports ) has totaled ~ $50 including S-Video AV cabling ( best PS1 value-performance option for NTSC-U gaming ) , power cables and a dual thumbstick controller for each unit from my local thrift stores. A serial link / combat cable can be had at my regional used game seller for $5 . My example was still $5 among a larger eBay lot comprised of a complete-in-box Command & Conquer - Red Alert Retaliation alongside the typically expensive PS1 mouse for $35 total with free shipping from one of my regional brick-front resellers via their eBay page. Keep an eye scanning on Craigslist or equivalent and have product / search notifications enabled. The same seller serendipitously stunned me when I landed one of my pair of my monster SCPH-1110 Analog Joysticks last year in a $15 eBay Buy Now price + free shipping from one of their locations ~ 45 miles away. The purchase price was less than fuel for such a trip. I have to possibly lengthen the serial cable for passing through a wall in order to connect my sound-separated PS1s , couple of corresponding quality CRTs and up-cycled ~ 15 year old home theater receivers with 5.1 setups in each room to maximize their audio propositions , but am looking forward to my frugal works. Never bought a console nor video game 'new' from the store so I see this route as being of great value and within budget after putting in some casual seeking and some labor ( heavy CRTs ! ) in order to catch up on these experiences and share them with family who may be interested in some entertainment variety beyond the norm that still proposes cross-generational value. Nice ( formerly $1000 USD + ) CRTs are being e-cycled, sold cheap or otherwise being given away on Criagslist to the lucky person(s) wanting to lug them out of the seller's home. Have seen at least half a dozen free, upper tier component video and S-video capable flat display CRT tube TVs through casual perusal of my area's Criagslist in just the last year or two. Their numbers are dwindling via e-cyclers but sellers in my area otherwise have an e-waste fee to pay those organizations to rid themselves of these beasts if not also a visit to the chiropractor and a dose of an anti-inflammatory or muscle relaxer if they have to move it themselves. CRTs have better color, black depth and contrast levels while excelling at complimentary lag-free, no-fuss, clear image performance for standard definition. Cheers! - hope this has lowered any barriers to at least within a reasonable, value-adding proposition.
@OldsXCool7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind words. Come to think of it I might want to pick up a link cable myself as I actually do have all the other equipment needed to facilitate a link up since I have like 4 Playstations now and an extra CRT just sitting in my room doing nothing. It sounds like a fun little project. Honestly I never saw the death of home theater coming. It got killed by it's predecessor! In the end I'n not really surprised that it did when I think of everyone I knew had one of those HTIBs and they never had the speakers in the right placement, had objects directly in front of the speakers to hide them, never had any of the volume levels adjusted so the surrounds were always way too loud. Joe Average was always much better off with two speakers anyway. Then Joe Average comes over my house and is blown away because my room sounds like a professional theater. They always ask me how I did it and then make fun of my DIY sound panels that keep the sound under control. Truthfully though I did get a chance to hear a decent mid priced sound bar in my room when I was testing it'a worthiness for a friend who was giving it to his dad for Christmas. It had a wireless sub and some faux surround sound processing built into it and it did a pretty good job. It wasn't even close to a real discrete system with real power behind it, but it definitely sounded much better than similarity priced HTIBs and required very little setup. And that's how Joe Average home theater died by stereo. Two speakers, one input, no setup, best sound that Joe Average has ever heard in his own house. LOL

Hi, I worked on NFS1 PSX and can give some details. We wrote our own game engine for NFS1 PSX. Brad and Laurent worked on the rendering engine. They dynamically sub-divided triangles trying to get the right balance between performance and quality. The PS1 did affine texture Mapping, not perspective-correct Texture Mapping, so triangle close to the camera would "wobble" / "shimmer". Sub-dividing was a "hack" to work-around the lack of a proper 1/z divide per pixel. www.mobygames.com/game/playstation/need-for-speed
