Maybe you can spend a couple of hours in the countryside. The country air, the peaceful scenery, and the calming sounds really does wonders for the souls. Where is the closest rural area located from inner city Chicago?

One of the things I love about the life you are showing us with this channel is the friendship and cooperation between neighbors. It's not that urban/suburban neighbors can't be so, but when you're a rancher and your neighbor is a rancher you know so well what the other is going through. One of you needs help today, the other will need help tomorrow...it's a community in the true sense of the word. Thanks for another great video!

I grew up on a farm, and I can remember at 3/4 years old being shown how to use our tractor to help pull a calf.. early lesson on life, death, using what you have to make it. Our farm was just 40 acres, but it felt like a million as a kid. good times... hard times, but I miss it

Mike, i bet you are happy to see that rain. you dont have hay to bale because of drought and i can't bale hay because of the almost daily rain showers we have been getting since the first of July in south Mississippi. It seems real difficult for everything to be just right when if comes to farming, it seems we are always needing what we dont have.

We had a prize bull get across the back fence into a neighbors heard and it took us 5 months to get it back. Missed our breading session for the year. We had to hound the sheriff to force the neighbor to let us on his property. Our bull was way better stock than his stock so he delayed as long as he could. Glad to see the rain there Mike. We are doing the dance for more here in south east Texas too.

If you and your family, or even the neighbors, need to contact each other a lot outside cell service, try looking into mobile radios. CB for neighbors, or FRS/GMRS for your family. Could save your life if you get into trouble outside service. I have both CB/Ham mobile units in my truck and carry handhelds in the console for walking away from the truck. I can recommend quite a few units if interested. There's lots of good cheap ones on ebay.

In a video a while back Cole Sonne was talking about his alfalfa and the need to leave some leafy substances on them, no additional cuttings, so that the plants would be able to drive calcium into the root system for regeneration the following spring. Do you have those concerns for your hay fields after turning the cattle loose in them?

Question from a city slicker: Is there such a thing as tracking collars for cattle? It seems like a LOT of time and gas are spent searching of animals in huge open spaces. All Randy would have to do is fire up his computer to see where his bulls were. I imagine the initial investment would be very high but measure that against time, equipment, gas and safety of the animals. The rancher could know that his animals broke threw a fence while he’s sitting at his kitchen table instead of the sheriff knocking on his door four hours after the fact. I assume the collars would stay at the ranch for the next generation when the present groups is shipped off. Inventory control.

Mike, you ever though about getting your ham license so you are never out of touch no matter where you are at on the ranch? You could get a base station and a portable so that you and Erin can keep in touch, There are several repeaters in Gillette, both 2 meter and 70 cm, and as flat as it is in Campbell County I think you could easily cover the 16 miles to a repeater. Not sure if any have a phone patch but I wouldn’t doubt it. Doesn’t cost that much and it would be great insurance in case something happens. At the least you wouldn’t have to drive just to make a call for help. The technician license is easy enough that it would take about a weekend’s worth of study to gain. Costs 15 bucks to take the test. Equipment goes from inexpensive to down right silly, but just good enough would be a few hundred bucks.
