I remember Nels and his brother on drums rehearsing contemporary music around 1970 in the West LA area at a rehearsal studio. When I watched this I think about the commitment to this path. Thelonious Monk said if it takes 35 years to find your own voice in music it will be worth. He's now like the Cecil Taylor of guitar. Well done Nels!

I love how they manage to improvise all the 2nds, minor 2nds, all kinds of augmented intervals and occasionally a good old minor 7 run to ground us and ....... it all makes musical sense! These are my favorite two avant-jazz guitarists and it has been a thrill to see them collaborate.

Awesome. That dude gets an amazing amount of expression out of that minimalist drumkit. And Nels is , as always, pushing it to the edge. As the skateboarders say,"No falls, no balls." He is my favorite living guitarist.

I was listening to this and thought: "this reminds me a lot of John McLaughlin's album Extrapolation", one of my favorite jazz albums. Then, at 22:15 Nels Cline mentions that same exact album and says that is also one of his favorite records. I guess the influence of that recordings manifests very clearly in theirs performance, which I love by the way. Nels Cline and Julian Lage are amazing guitarists.

Crazy what one guy can do with 2 drums and a cymbal. Add to that what the other three can do with their 16 strings, and it sums up to a collectively amazing quartet. Thanks for keeping it weird!

Julian Lage is an amazing guitarist as well. Love the album of guitar duets Room he and Nels did a few years back. Now I think I need to get the one featuring this band: Currents, Constellations. A lot of this music calls Ornette Coleman to mind. Edit: and a lot of it doesn't.
@MrMusicguyma6 жыл бұрын
Julian is pretty wide-ranging these days, bluegrass to blues to jazz to whatever this is. Authentic and having fun in every one, Inspirational. Nels plays nice, unusual "composer" guitar. I like the sounds he comes up with outside the box.

Wow, this is really good. Then at 17:05 it got even better! So enjoyable on many head and sonic levels. I play around 28 different instruments and don't bother to play with others because they are stuck in a rut of non creativity. I really, but really don't fit in with most musicians and the music they play. I'm wasting away, playing music all day long every day all alone in this my second complete studio. But I'd play with these guys anyday. I hear creativity in their music.
