My parents were affected in the Moore County NC power outage caused by such a shooting. The area is largely inhabited with retired veterans. It also occurred during some of the coldest days of the year. We were lucky more didn’t die. I worry constantly now.

As someone who works in the Utility Industry as a Transmission planning engineer, I will say that it is impossible to make ALL substations, from minor to major, all 100% resilient to bullets and all possible attacks. That would cost billions and billions of dollars on the backs of the taxpayers because the government will not pay for it. Also, the lead times to get some of these transformers in is multiple years and to keep a backup transformer for every single substation across the country would be untenable. That is why we HAVE to only focus our efforts on the major high voltage substations.

@john1425 agreed, but they were talking about making all of them resilient, even the "less important", rural subs (meaning from a large scale cascading outage perspective). Impossibility. We are working in that spectrum you talk about to make as much as we can more resilient, but you have to do it intelligently and pick and choose the best areas to harden first. Who's paying for all this hardening? What about the multi-year lead times? Questions people don't like to hear.

We are ordering equipment now but we can't order and keep backlogs of multi million dollar equipment to harden the number of substations they were discussing in this podcast. it's impossible and the costs bore by taxpayers...so yes we are working to harden the more important infrastructure right now so you saying we aren't tells me you know nothing about how the transmission projects come about, how they are studied, or how they are planned and engineered.. I bring up lead times to point out it isn't an overnight solution. it will take decades to harden on the scale being discussed here.

Security experts have been warning about dangers to power grid, especially at local levels, since before 2015, when I first heard about this. Warnings included concerns about transformers being shot out. Center for Security Policy was one group actively campaigning for utilities to take relatively simple and affordable measures to prevent people from being able to shoot out transformers from the street.

Transformers are oil-cooled, I believe, and when the power transformer overheats, it doesn't take long. All it takes is a hole, and then the oil drains out. These transformers are huge, requiring infrastructure to be taken out sometimes to get them to where they need to go.
