The eye parallels the observation of the full moon which is heavily connected to the menstrual cycle of women every month as well as the seeing eye of judgment.

The whole "witch" thing actually seems somewhat plausible. I just watched it earlier tonight and I think I'm becoming obsessed with it. This is actually my first Refn film and I'm really glad I saw it. 9/10 for me.

Great review, to me the third act was slightly foreshadowed earlier in the movie when *SPOILERS* Sarah started sucking the blood out of Jesses hand after the casting. But it was one of those moments where you don't realise that it was a hint until the pay off happens.

Francis Viola not just that but also the mountain lion scene where it's ripping apart something and the landlord tells jesse that it's her fault for letting the lion in is (I think ) a foreshadowing to how she was ripped apart ,by the model,because she had once let in "the neon demon " and was then consumed by it . Literally .

I completely agree about the feeling of withces/coven/dark fairy tale. The whole movie reminded me so much of Suspiria(1977) I am glad I was not the only to catch that vibe. I loved Neon Demon.

Very much enjoyed this review. Three thoughts (spoilers obviously)-- first, the fact that he mostly shoots his movies chronologically so that they can change from the original idea in the course of filming accounts for *some* of the shifts in the film. Apparently the metaphysical nature of the last act was a rewrite that came about once he was blown away by Jena Malone. They did the morgue scene early and out of order and once he saw her in action he was like "Okay, we really have something here." Second, the photographer seems in his way to be a kind of rival sorceror to the coven, needing to feed on that same special *something* that they do (albeit in a different fashion), and zeroing in on Jesse as early as they do. It also accounts for Ruby's warning to Jesse not to be alone with the photographer, which Jesse initially misinterprets and which Ruby clarifies has nothing to do with him being some kind of sexual threat. Third, her being a virgin is obviously very significant, and that being the case, I think it casts an interesting light on Ruby's overwhelming sexual desire for Jesse: if Jesse had given in to Ruby, would it have saved her life (as she would no longer have been a virgin sacrifice)? I guess what I'm coming away with is, was Jesse's fate always sealed from the start, or was it only sealed once she rejected Ruby? Ruby clearly gets something different from the sacrifice than the other two.

I think you're right that there is some supernatural element to Ruby and the two models she's friends with. I thought it was very unusual that Ruby was always around, or even stalking Jesse. I even suspect that she was the animal that got inside her motel room.

If the vampire/witch interpretation was taken literally, could the cougar in Jesse's room have been one of the women (Ruby, Abbey or Gigi)? Saw the movie today and was enchanted and disturbed. The film raises questions about style vs. substance and, in my opinion, favors style. I liked the reference to Lolita about half way through the film, since Lolita, like the Neon Demon, explores the relationship between aesthetics and morality/substance. Overall, great but not perfect movie. If you can take it as it is, it's an interesting experience.

they sacrificed a virgin for Sarah, that is the plot. they gold painted Jess like they do with animals in ancient tribes. the movie was not style over substance, i mean, it actually had a very profound substance to it, if the substance here was the style lmao - actually it has David Lynch and Kubrick kinda vibe to it which I think this movie is one of the best movies ive seen so far.

The Neon Demon is amazing ...Beautiful horror... and I agree with you on the Soundtrack. I have heard a few people talk about the witch angle. +Impression Blend I have read an earlier version of the script, which is much more clearer than what we see in the film. First of all, Ruby is a witch. There was a scene, in which Jesse goes to her actual flat and she has a bunch of sorcery books. And another scene (after the blood bath) in which it is made clear that Ruby was trespassing the mansion (the owners were on vacation) and Jessie's old Buick is actually featured and not only mentioned like in the film.

It did not remind me of a ritual performed by a coven of witches. It reminded me of the accounts of Erzebet Bathory. What convinced me of this was Ruby in the tub with the water with the blood of Jesse in it, and the two other girls covered in the blood of Jesse whom are also bathing, but in a shower. Also, the three girls consumed the flesh of Jesse. Erzebet Bathory was reputed to bathe in the blood of 600 young virgin girls, and was also reputed to have engaged in some cannibalism of the these young girls. Bathory did this because she thought bathing in the blood of a young virgin girl would give her more youth and beauty. Also, another individual suggested the eye at the end was an allusion to "The Tell-Tale Heart" -- not just a reference to the statement made by Jesse about the Moon being an eye -- for two reasons. First, the eye of the victim in "The Tell-Tale Heart" was the reason why the murderer murdered the victim, as the murderer thought the eye was producing an effect of evil upon the murderer. Second, the eye in that scene in "The Neon Demon" could symbolize the guilt that Gigi had for the act of murder and cannibalism she participated upon Jesse; just as how the sound of a beating heart in the mind of the murderer from "The Tell-Tale Heart" was a symbol of the guilt he experienced from the act of murder and dismemberment of the body of the victim at the end of the story.
@Zeitgeist6
@Zeitgeist6 8 жыл бұрын
yes. Refn actually said the movie was inspired by Bathory. In fact when I saw Ruby in the tub I immediately thought of her as Bathory. Bathory was a Countess and she's in that big mansion.. Makes sense.

I live in Alaska so I finally just watched this. I'm glad you did a review of this. I found Neon Demon to be a fairy tale. From the first moment Jenna Malone showed up I felt she was circling around Elle Fanning to steal something from her. The party scene directly after the strange David Lynchian (lot's of Lynch here) bathroom discussion, where the pulsing music and strobe effects take over, spelled everything out. Then that vibe subsides a bit. But it sets the tone. I agree with you. Not a perfect film but quite memorable and a surprising performance from Elle. And one of a handful of films that play with the borderland between beauty and horror. A couple of my other favorites are both French: Les Yeux Sans Visage (Eyes Without A Face) and Livide (Livid). You might scare these up. Thanks again for the thoughtful review Mariana.

The Neon Demon felt like watching Suspiria directed by Gaspar Noe. Besides that, the whole trend nowadays of critiquing a movie for being style before substance is getting a bit silly. If the filmmakers aim is to bring you an amazing visual experience, and creates a narrative only for that reason, why is that considered a bad thing by so many?

I'm not a Refn fan. I didn't appreciate even Drive. But somehow I thought I'd like Neon Demon. I just saw it today at an early afternoon, sparsely attended showing which was a perfect atmosphere to view it. Marianna, this is one of your best reviews and I wasn't surprised to find out you liked it. Pacing and the jarring changes the story goes through will be a problem for most but I loved it. I agree that there is a Grimm's fairy-tale vibe going on. The visuals and score worked to add to the beauty and weirdness of the film. Elle Fanning, and the three weird "sisters" were excellent. Thanks

This movie much like the runway scene and the actual neon demon enters your mind and stays there. I have been constantly thinking about it for the last three days. What surprised me the most was how much I liked Abbey Lee's performance. She steals every scene she's in. All the performances were good but I didn't expect it from her. It did feel like the women were a coven but not really witches. More like obsessed selfish monsters like in the movie Ravenous.

Which is ironic because I saw a recent interview with Refn where he says while he enjoys his creative freedom, he'd love to direct a big budget Hollywood blockbuster. Which, if I were to pick one director who's films are polarizing and flat out different, it's NWR. I don't think I'd ever recommend one of his films, especially this one because 99% of people wouldn't get it. But you won't see anything like this all year. You won't hear a score like this all year and won't see cinematography like this all year. Like I said good or bad, that's admirable. Okay I'm done now!!

This is a film that's unforgettable. I haven't been able to stop thinking about it. The visuals are so striking. It was almost like a dark fairy tale (muck like Drive). Sure, it was a bit unsettling and very weird, but those are arguably the prime reasons I can't stop thinking about it. The themes are relevant. I think the film speaks on vanity and self indulgence in an intriguing way. I enjoyed this film. I think Refn is hit or miss with critics but he's undeniably talented. I loved Bronson, Drive and the Pusher series. Neon Demon has some great performances too, particularly from Jena Malone who stole the show for me. I definitely want to see this again. It'll be a cult classic for sure.

I didn't get a witchy feel from it (of course, I'm active in occult groups, so Winding & I might have different ideas about things). However, those are some good points (the moon, etc). I think it _was_ style above substance, but considering the subject matter it was almost certainly intentional (and the correct way to go with it). I was mostly just getting bored because nothing was happening but captivated enough by the beautiful cinematography that when the third act hit, it hit HARD.
@ImpressionBlend

I know what you mean! I wish the pacing was a bit more even, because the third act was insane and I loved that.
@architeuthis3476
@architeuthis3476 7 жыл бұрын
I don't know, in any other film I might agree but in this case, I think the pacing was exactly what it needed to be. Personally, the pacing is reminiscent of a relationship I once had with with a model: 1st Act = Getting hooked-in by the beauty. 2nd Act = It starts looking-like beauty is the only thing the film has going for it. One questions whether its worth continuing to watch a film for the sake of beauty alone and may even regret having started watching the film. 3rd Act = The ending is pure insanity. I think this is also intended to reflect how the audience is supposed to feel about the lead character while watching it: really interesting in the beginning, boring but not quite annoying in the middle, and really interesting in the end. That isn't to say that the film _didn't_ have anything other than beauty going for it, just that all the substance didn't become clear until the 3rd act (although it had been there all along). Its actually a very intelligent film trying to present itself as a very superficial film - which would ruin almost any other film but is absolutely perfect here. The film is criticizing 21st Century cinema audiences for being superficial, fickle, and not recognizing a good thing until its over. The lead character is the film itself and the other characters (of which there are only a few) are caricatures of the audience. Those who stick with the movie all the way to the end (even if they had some doubts midway through) are rewarded, and those who are bored with it or only like it for the imagery alone are mocked by the film itself. I'm going to have to watch it again and pay closer attention to the witchy symbolism described in yor review.

Neon Demon was definitely, as you mentioned, an experience. I need to see it a second time to truly decide on whether I love it or hate it. This film, like most of Refn's films, brooks no middle ground. One either loves them or hates them. I think the film is a full-blown horror film. It's just a slow burn that leads up to that third act. Whether he was subconsciously channeling his inner Jean Rollin and Dario Argento, but Neon Demon was like REfn's riff on the 70's and 80's Italian giallo. From the use of garish color that reminded me of Suspiria and the dream-like sequences that was Jean Rollin at the height of his filmmaking skills. I think everyone should see Neon Demon. They'll either love it or hate it, but one thing they won't be is bored or disinterested. This film will definitely pull a reaction of one form or another.

Haha thanks! (Minor spoilers) I completely agree with the witch coven thing. I never thought of it that way. It reminded me of the story of Bloody Mary, who bathed in the blood of virgins to steal their beauty. I'm actually going to see this film for the third time, so I'll watch it again with that mindset.

Definitely something witchy going on, but I'm not sure about a coven. Jena Malone's character seems to have done this sort of things before, but the other two girls seem to be totally out of their element. The rose bushes kinda tip me off to that as well. They're scattered around the home, and she seems to be planting another in the shallow grave she lays in right after killing Jessie. Plus I read an interview where Jena Malone herself said "She's like 300 years old and this is like the 80th girl she's done this too".

I got a felling that Keanu character didn't kill that girl in the room ,but Ruby did. She didn't see him killing her she just dream it. Maybe Ruby projected that dream ( if she is a witch than she has some powers ) so that she thinks that he killed her, so she can come to live at her house. She manipulated her all this time. This movie is so confusing.

Regarding your question: Contrary to other directors NWR is fairly vocal when it comes to interpretation. He has said in an interview that you are basically right in your assumptions regarding the witch/literal interpretation of the 3rd act. Specifically he has mentioned that Jena Malone's character is probably 300 years old and Jesse is just one in a long line of sacrifices that give her back her youth and lets her "bleed" again like a young girl.

Spoilers ahead. I enjoyed the movie, but not really enough to own a copy. It just isn't something I can show to my friends, they wouldn't appreciate the color and composition of scenes. As you said, I imagine this film will sail over a lot of peoples heads, it isn't the most accessible picture for main stream audiences. However, I found the many elements of foreshadowing to be very clever, and the beauty of some shots made me pause the movie just to admire them. Really great stuff, and if you can enjoy a film from that element alone, you'll like this one. As far as the witch coven goes, I got a sense of that as well. Though I took them to be LITERAL demons-- the cannibalism drives this home for me. Especially in the case of Ruby and Sarah, who seemed to have some magical elements to them. They did some impossible things, and I find it hard to see that as only symbolism. I don't know, maybe it's just wishful thinking on my part. But that's not to say the title isn't also metaphorical. I believe it's very obvious to see that the "neon demon" is the fashion industry itself. On a side note, the cougar scene really bothered me. Just because I'm nitpicky and I know they used tiger sounds for the mountain lion's roar. That sort of a pet peeve of mine. Oh, and I'm glad to see that Charles Baker is still getting work, even if it is just a bit part. I was worried his career would be ruined by Breaking Bad.

I also had a tough time rating this one. I ended up giving it a B+, but it was also a film on which the minute it ended, I wanted to see it again. I saw Jesse as a lost, innocent lamb in a city of hungry wolves. But I also understand the witches coven interpretation, and, the more I think about it, the more I think Refn was mostly going for that aspect.

I watched the movie because I heard so many people rave about it... to answer your question, I don't know if this was some sort of witches coven because it definitely seemed like the girl at the end hadn't done what she did with the other girls to Jessie.. pacing... I would say slow.. and I'm all for exposition, but there wasn't much of that going into the 3rd act.. there was no hint that the make up artist and the 2 models were into that together.. yes there is the scene when Jess cuts her self that could hint at it.. but it was disconnected from the other girls.. and Jena Malone is a make up artist... and yeah a little obsessed with death... but that scene seemed like she was just imaging a living Jess.. not a dead one. The last 10 minutes are intense.. when the one girl gets sick because I knew what was going to happen... and after it did.. I knew that the next thing would happen, because the other model was slowly reaching for it... I could buy that this was like their first time doing this... but there was no hint they were collaborating together.. and Jena just being mad that Jess rejected her advances seems a bit weak for her to get involved...

Yes, although Refn might say take it literally or whatever, he's definitely leading you to think otherwise. I didn't care for Valhalla either. But The Neon Demon is definitely going to get a polarizing reaction. I've read some that hated it. As far as ratings, I guess that's why Siskel & Ebert just went thumbs up (go see it) or down (don't). I gave it a four starts too. Maybe 3.5, but I had to round it up to 4 for the cinematography alone, and going against the Hollywood norm and formula. Probably make it to my Top Ten of 2016.

Refn mentioned in interviews that he wants to make movies that get polarizing reactions - he doesn't want to make "safe" movies. I can definitely respect that and the way he sticks to his vision.

I don't buy many soundtracks, but one of those that I did buy was by the same composer that did the S.T. for this movie. His name is Cliff Martinez, and has an interesting Wikipedia article, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cliff_Martinez. The soundtrack I bought by him is Solaris. I listen to it often because I use it to facilitate calm concentration. (kzbin.info/aero/PLB83B80EE6B47206C). I am more interested in checking out the soundtrack to this movie than in the movie. It looks like the Black Swan or Eyes Wide Shut, two movies by my favorite directors that I hated.

+Impression Blend With regard to your witches' coven impression, I think you are on the right track, but they impressed me as rabid wolves, devouring anything they wanted, especially anything, or anyone, that got in their way. I think this idea ties back to the wild cat they find in her motel room --a feral animal that represents danger and death. Anyway, that was my take. That being said, I didn't like this movie that much. It was okay, but not great. It definitely didn't stay with me or have me thinking about it later in a "haunted" sort of way. Even though I liked Only God Forgives quite a bit, I found Refn's shocking scenes in this one, and there are two in particular involving Ruby, that are just way too contrived. You can practically see Refn patting himself on the back for "daring" to do them....and I think Refn intended my reaction to be much, much stronger than it was. I actually think it all falls a bit flat because those scene's sole purpose is to shock/disturb/offend. It was a bit too self-conscious and I just didn't buy it. You could have removed those scenes and lost nothing. They serve no other purpose other than Refn getting off at your shock and incredulity. (You can find interviews with Refn going on about how "the reaction" is everything and in artistic terms, "why else are we even here?" I enjoy the guy's films but he's definitely more than a little impressed with himself.) Anyway, I think Drive and Forgives are much, much stronger films. As an aside, for some reason the picture quality here in your video is much better than what I saw when I watched the film itself on Amazon Video (their streaming service). It was supposed to have been in HD but your clips look much better. I had no interest in seeing the movie again, but I might now if I could rent it from a source that looks better.

Amazon automatically determines whether or not to play the movie in HD quality, based on your internet connection, and sadly there isn't a way to manually tell it to load HD regardless. I just used the trailers for my video though.

When you stream on amazon, you have to pay more for the HD version, although I watched it for free through Prime. Anyway, HD streaming content never looks as good as Blu because of bandwidth issues. The interesting thing with your video in my case is it's streaming vs. streaming. It all boils down to the fact that, obviously, Amazon HD is clearly not stellar quality.

Great review. I have that weird feeling where I'm so excited for this movie that it's probably my most anticipated of this year now, and yet because of my reactions to NWR's previous films, I'm worried I'll hate it ;) ha ha. I really didn't like Only God Forgives at all, but at the same time I absolutely love Drive and Bronson. I thought his style was executed to near perfection in Drive. It just felt so intricate and precise. Not a single shot or line of dialogue was without purpose in that film :) He's a hit and miss director for me too, but his good films are absolutely outstanding. Can't wait to discuss this movie more after I've seen it :) I really don't know if I like Drive or Bronson the most, both so good :)

The movie is subjective with its metaphors and deeper meanings for sure. However I think the one theme that is pretty straightforward is consumption. How we are willing to consume anything. Ourselves and even others and all for what? Fame.. Power..Beauty? Also the necrophilia scene may have hinted at what it might be like to have sex with someone who is quite literally dead inside.

Just watched it a few weeks ago. I absolutely saw the witches coven aspect from the restroom scene near the beginning (which was quite Lynchian). They seemed to be sizing her up. The bondage dance club scene immediately after has an incantory quality as well. And here's what's really interesting, there seems to be a new wave of highly stylized films coming out. It's almost a movement. Think Under The Skin, Behind The Black Rainbow, The Love Witch, Lords of Salem, That Poppy videos, etc. all of these purposely jump off of the reality train to create dream visions more than coherent logic. I think these films are a (usually) low budget creative reactions to the overly efficient cinema of the present, where everyone seems to be scripting things out of a screenplay manual. I suspect this hyperstylization will grow more. Good review here Mariana, glad I got back to it.
@ImpressionBlend
@ImpressionBlend 7 жыл бұрын
Thank you! The highly stylized movies are almost a sub-genre of their own at this point, but I think they can be VERY hit or miss, and they're definitely divisive for the audiences. Personally, I enjoy a visually-stunning film, but there has to be something behind the style-I'm there for the story and themes over anything else.

Thanks for your spot on review.. In both "Enemy", "Under the skin" and this beauty "The Neon Demon", the directors choose to use these parallel explanatory clips of wonderful weirdness.. Beautifully painfull to watch.. Refn also seems to use "horror" in sounds and lighting as an xtra protagonist all by itself and it ads a layer in the story which inspires to deeper thinking, which continues for days in some of us.. I love that xtra dimension so much I gladly accepts the pacing issues and weird "goreporn".. Oh yeah and the soundtrack!!

Oh my gosh, I was the same way! Watched it last night and can't stop thinking about it. And yes, I listened to the soundtrack all day at work on Spotify and then bought it on iTunes when I came home! There are so many times I've had a song stuck in my head, this might be the first time I ever had a movie stuck in my head. There was definitely a witches coven vibe, especially with the moon and blood imgery. The three antagonists (Ruby, Sarah and Gigi, definitely form a triumvirate, fitting for the triangles that surround Jesse in every major moment of change for her character, including her moments in the pool looking up. ,
@ImpressionBlend
@ImpressionBlend 8 жыл бұрын
To add to the coven vibe, someone also pointed out how many times the triangle symbol is used in the movie, which is definitely an important symbol in witchcraft. I feel like the blood and the moon scene (this may be too literal, but hey I'm trying to make sense of it here) could be Ruby getting her youth back after killing Jesse - I guess it was mentioned in one of the interviews that her character may actually be 300 years old.

I have a tendency to overthink just about everything and this film gave me a lot to work off of, so I loved it. But yeah, I totally was thinking about witches when the 3rd act came about. I really liked it. I like all of Refn's movies. You should pick up the Pusher trilogy, or find some way to watch them. They felt like the most realistic crime movies ive ever seen. Anyway, back to Neon Demon. I got an Elizabeth Bathory vibe from the Ruby character especially after she was bathing in the blood. The score, cinematography and acting is all fantastic. But what I really liked about it is how it turns the typical girl unraveling story on its head. We think its about Jessie, then we think its about Ruby, then the other two girls (forgetting there names) its really fucking cool.
