In this installment of Nightmare Masterclass, I analyze the film The Neon Demon, directed by Nicolas Winding Refn. I saw The Neon Demon shortly after its limited release last June, and my initial reaction to the film was one of ambivalence. I recently revisited the film, and have come to the conclusion that there's a deeper significance underneath the film's slick visuals.
Refn is perhaps best known for his 2011 film Drive, a crime drama starring Ryan Gosling. The film was praised up and down for its stylish foray into neo-noir cinema. As evidenced by Refn’s follow up, an obtuse and inaccessible film called Only God Forgives, and now The Neon Demon, the man has a penchant for taking certain risks in his movies. That is a good thing in my book.
And since this is my first foray into cinema, I will disclose right off the bat that I am not a film critic, nor am I particularly well versed in film theory. But I do think that I have a unique take on this film, and that's why I wanted to share it. Put simply, there is more going on in this film than it seems many viewers are noticing.
The film isn't perfect, but Refn should be praised for his continual effort to make unconventional, daring films. I'd also be remiss without acknowledging the great work of Natasha Braier, the film's cinematographer.
